James Atkinson I was born a 1668 at James City Co, Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Atkinson II and Susannah Gwaltney. James Atkinson I married Mary Holleman, daughter of Christopher Hollyman I and Mary Grey, in 1681 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. James Atkinson I died in 1723 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 23 Dec 1723 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia.
The repetition of given names in the two generations before James led to considerable confusion about the names of the wives and even that there are two generations of men named Thomas between this James and his great grandfather Matthew. This causes the dates proposed in those genealogies to be off by a generation.

This James Atkinson was NOT the James Atkinson whose stepfather was Thomas Pitman; that was this James' uncle.

The 28 Jul 1723 will of this James Atkinson mentions his daughter Mary, son James and wife Mary. Executors were his wife and daughter Mary Atkinson. Witnesses were Thomas Atkinson and John Stevenson. (Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight Co, VA 1647-1800.)

Francis Williamson I1

Mother:Jane / Joan Allen (a 1630 - a 1710)
Charts:Amanda Ola Weathers lineage
Francis Williamson I was born a 1659 at Virginia. He was the son of Dr. Robert Williamson I and Jane / Joan Allen. Francis Williamson I married Ann (Unknown) a 1686. Francis Williamson I died on 14 May 1743 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 22 Aug 1743 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia.
Francis Williamson joined Joshua Turner in witnessing an agreement of William Boddie with William and Elizabeth Arrington on 10 Sep 1683. The 1701 will of John Fulgham in Isle of Wight Co, VA referred to the adjoining land of Francis Williamson. In 1705 Francis, John Fulgham and Edward Boykin appraised the estate of John Turner. Francis was named executor of the will of Joseph Jones (no date.)

On 25 Apr 1701 Francis Williamson was granted 417 acres on the south side of Seacock Swamp in Southampton Co, VA for transporting 9 people into Virginia. This was on the same day his brother George Williamson was granted 770 acres on the Black Water Swamp. Francis and George were on the 1704 Virgina Quit Rents list with 2,035 and 2,735 acres respectively in Isle of Wight County.

Francis' namesake son was estimated to be at the age of majority by around 1708, so court records starting about that time could have been for either the father or son. On 24 Jun 1729 Francis, John Little and Joshua Turner appraised the estate of Anthony Fulgham. On 23 Feb 1729 Francis, John Dunkley and Edward Harris appraised the estate of John Boykin. Francis, John Dunkley and Mathew Kinchen appraised the estate of Edward Boykin (no date) and on 25 Jun 1733 they appraised the estate of William Boykin.

Francis Williamson's will named his wife Ann; sons Arthur, Joseph, Benjamin; daughter Martha Atkinson; granddaughters Mourning and Martha Williamson; and grandsons Francis, Jessee, Arthur, Burwell, Joseph, Hardy, Absolm, Benjamin and James Williamson. His executors were Arthur and Benjamin Williamson, and his witnesses were James Simmons and Thomas Williamson. Arthur and Benjamin Williamson presented the estate inventory of Francis Williamson senior on 24 Sep 1744.

Ann Exum1

F, ID# 2974, (a 1701 - c 1753)
Father:William Exum II (a 1672 - )
Mother:Susannah "Susan" Purcell (a 1674 - )
Ann Exum was born a 1701 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. She was the daughter of William Exum II and Susannah "Susan" Purcell. Ann Exum married Arthur Williamson, son of Francis Williamson I and Ann (Unknown), a 1720. Ann Exum died c 1753 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. Her estate was probated on 1 Feb 1753 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia.
There were many Ann Exums born around the same time in the same area and even married into the same Williamson family. Analysis of Exum family wills provided a hypothesis for how this Ann Exum fits into the Exum families of Isle of Wight Co, VA. The 1720 probate of the will of her father William Exum included sons John, William, Joseph and Robert; daughters Anne Williamson and Sarah; and wife Susan. William's witnesses were Thomas Atkinson, Francis Exum and William Crocker.

The will of his daughter Ann Williamson probated 1 Feb 1753 noted brothers John, William and Joseph Exum; sister Sarah Exum; (no descriptor) Moses Exum; cousins Ann Westray and Susan Atkinson; (no descriptor) Eliza Exum. Executors: friend Thomas Williamson and brother John Exum. Witnesses: Charles Binns, Jacob Williamson and Daniel Mackey. Anne's brother Robert was not included because his will was probated on 23 Apr 1739. This Anne Exum Williamson had to be born about 1700 to fit into her birth family, and thus she could not have been the mother of Francis Williamson's children who were born in the 1690s and several of whom were alive in 1753.

So the Ann Williamson of the 1753 probate is the Anne Williamson, daughter of William Exum junior and Susannah Purcell. This Ann Exum is presumed to be the Ann Exum who married Arthur Williamson, based only on the research of Ray Rowland, but there is no indication this Ann Exum was the wife of Francis Williamson.

A second Ann Exum, also born about 1700, lived in Isle of Wight Co, VA and married to a Williamson, was the daughter of Francis and Mary Exum; she cannot be the wife of Francis Williamson because of when she was born versus when Francis' children were born.

A third Ann Exum was Ann, possibly daughter of John Lawrence, who married Jeremiah Exum. One of them was a Quaker, thus Jeremiah and Ann were often in Quaker records, such as in a 1704 Suffolk Co, VA record. Jeremiah and Ann left wills in Isle of Wight Co, VA. They had daughters, including Ann Exum -- the fourth by that name in this area, as well as son Capt. Richard Exum who died unmarried leaving his estate to his sisters.
The daughters of Jeremiah and Ann Exum were:
--Mary married Jacob Ricks and about 1699 married Barnaby McKinne
--Ann married George Greene and died with no issue.
--Elizabeth died unmarried
--Jane married Richard Outland
--Mourning married William Scott
--Christian married George Norsworthy
--Sarah married her cousin Robert Lawrence junior
(https://www.jstor.org/stable/1916111?seq=2#metadata_info_tab_contents)
George Green's 8 Oct 1705 will left his brother John Green his Red Point plantation and his wife Anne his Poplar Neck plantation (part of which George had sold to Richard Williamson); mentioned his brother William and brother-in-law Jeremy Proctor. Jeremiah Exum was the overseer of George Greene's will. Jeremiah's will was probated 28 Mar 1720 and the legatees were daughter Elizabeth; daughter Mourning; daughter Christian, the land I bought of James Collins; grandaughter Catharine Scott; my cousin Jane Exum; daughter Sarah; daughter Mary; daughter Jane; wife. Because his daughter Ann was not included it is presumed she was deceased by the time her father Jeremiah's will was written on 3 Sep 1712.

An Ann Williamson, the wife of James Williamson was included in the Isle of Wight Co, VA will of John Upton proven 16 Dec 1652.
Thus this list of sisters provided a fourth Ann Exum, who was said to not have children.

Christopher Hollyman I1,2,3

M, ID# 2985, (a 1628 - a 1691)

Christopher Hollyman I was born a 1628. He immigrated on 22 May 1650 to Jamestown, Virginia. He married Anne (Unknown) a 1651. Christopher Hollyman I married Mary Grey a 1652. Christopher Hollyman I died a 1691 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 10 Aug 1692 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia.
Christopher Hollyman, an early Jamestown, VA, colonist, apparently arrived in America on 22 May 1650 (possibly as early as 1645). Records of arrivals at Jamestown show an Xtop Holeman (X is the abbreviation for Christ, therefore named Christop which is short for Christopher) sponsored by John Cos.

Christopher's origins are unknown. He may have come from from Kent, England. However, many of the early colonists came to Virginia by way of the islands of Bermuda, Barbados and St. Christopher. It was hypothesized the name Christopher was derived from the Island of St. Kitts, which is to say St. Christopher. Thus Christopher Hollyman may have been born on the Island of St. Kitts. Holleman also appears to be a Dutch name, and he may have been involved with the Puritans who fled from England to the Netherlands in the late 1500s and later emigrated to the Virginia Colony in the early 1600s.

Christopher's father was said to be John Holliman born in 1572 in Hertfordshire, Englandand died 1650 in Southampton Co, VA, but this man appears to be too old to be his father. His mother was said to be Judith born about about 1590 in Herfordshire and died in about 1659 in Southampton Co, VA.

There was apparently a family relationship among Hollemans who arrived in 1650s Virgina. English records provide evidence these Hollemans originally came from England by way of the aforementioned islands. Christopher Hollyman may have come to VA first to prepare a home for his family and other family members followed later. The Judith Holloman who arrived in Virgina in 1650 or one of the two other Judith Hollimans who arrived in 1653 were possibly Christopher's relatives. In 1653 a Christopher Hollman was transported to Lancaster Co, VA by John Sheerlock / Shadlock; this may be a different man or the same Christopher being double counted as a headright.

Christopher was probably about 20 years old when he immigrated, and this would place his birth somewhere around 1630, and he must have married shortly after emigrating. He settled in Wight County, VA and was very likely the earliest ancestor of the Holliman brothers who came to Fayette Co, AL, from Anson Co, NC in 1836.

Christopher Hollyman granted a power of attorney to Thomas Pittman on 30 Jun 1660. In 1661 Christopher filed a claim and was paid for 2 hogs killed by Indians. On 11 Jan 1661 Christopher bought a tract of land from George Smith. This transaction was endorsed by Christopher and his wife Anne. On 9 Dec 1668 this tract of land was sold to Thomas Pitt, and Christopher's wife was named Mary in this transaction.

In Oct 1677 the names Christopher C. Hollyman and Chris Hollyman, Jr. appear on a petition of pardon to the King during Bacon's Rebellion. Christopher's third son, Christopher would have been of age at this time -- probably about 22. Christopher's second son William received a land grand in 1685 for transporting three persons; this would make William of age and prospering, probably about 30 years old at the time. Since William was the second son, the first son, Thomas, would have been born about 1653.

Christopher died on 10 Aug 1691, which would make his age at death about 61. The 24 Apr 1691 will of Christopher Holliman names his wife Mary Holliman and his children Thomas, William, Christopher, Richard, Anne Atkinson and Mary Atkinson. In the name of God, I Christopher Holliman being very sick and weak of body but of perfect memory to make this last Will and Testament committing my soule to Christ Jesus, my Savior and Redeemer and my body to the earth from whence it came to be buried in decent manner and as for my worldly estate as followeth:

Item I bequeath unto my sonne Thomas Holliman, the land and plantation whereon he now dwelleth with the land belonging which I have already given him by a deed of gift which is not yet confirmed by the Court and which I confirm to him, his heirs, Executors administrators or assigns for ever.

I bequeath unto my sonne William Holliman all my land which do lyeth between the lands that I gave to my sonne, Thomas Holliman and William Gualneys line to him, his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns for ever.

I likewise give unto my sonne Richard Holliman my new tobacco house and sufficient ground for his use which lyeth adjoining or near the said house either cleared or to be cleared, with fences and privelege for timber and clearing more ground if he have occasion.

I give unto my daughters Anne Atkinson and Mary Atkinson each of them one ewe. I also give and bequeath unto my two sonnes Christopher Holliman and Richard Holliman all the rest of my land with the houses fences orchards woods and appurtenances to be equally divided in quantity and quallity to them, their heirs, executors, administrators or assaigns after the death of my wife Mary Holliman.

I beequeath unto my wife Mary Holliman my plantation and land during her life only which is excepted with the houses, orchards fences buildings. I do also give all my goods movable and immovable and cattle hogs and horses or whatsoever I am now possessed with all and further I do make my wife Mary Holliman my whole and sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament.

Witness my hand this 24th day of April in the year of our Lord 1691.

The Hollyman spelling gradually disappeared and became the various spellings used in modern times -- Holleman, Holliman, Holloman. In many instances the present-day spellings were caused by census takers who used phonetic spellings. Gradually, however, the name became Holliman before the descendants scattered from Johnston Co, NC. At one time there were descendants of at least three of the Christopher Hollyman sons residing in Johnston Co, NC.

The Jamestown Society listing for Qualifying Ancestors includes Dr. Robert Williamson because of his service in 1662 to 1670 in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Disagreement exists as to whether Robert was born in Isle of Wight Co, VA and perhaps attended school in England, or if he was born in England but his parents apparently did not come to America before Robert's birth.

Robert was the 6th largest patentee of land Isle in Wight Co, VA in the 1600s. On 26 Apr 1661 Robert purchased 295 acres of land. On 24 Mar 1664-65 Robert Williamson and Francis Ayers witnessed an agreement between James Sampson and Francis Baker. On 6 June 1666 Robert received 3,350 acres of land on the great swamp of the Black Water River adjoining Seward's Branch, being 295 acres granted on 26 Apr 1661, and 3,055 acres for the transfer of Joane Williamson and sixty-one other colonists into Virginia.

This deposition is partially repeated because it establishes a number or relationships and ages: "...deposed about a horse...conversation between Mr. Richard Lawrence and Mr. Robert Williamson at Court.... Arthur Allen, age 60, testified that he and brother (in-law) went to James City to see a horse.... Daniel Tucker, aged 55, testified that while at his brother (in-law) Allen's house...." This citation includes Arthur Allen, his son-in-law, Robert Williamson and Daniel Tucker, the brother of Arthur's wife. (Surry Co, VA Records, Book 1 p 306, 7 Jul 1668)

Robert's 16 Feb 1669 will requested his burial as near as possible to his deceased father-in-law Arthur Allen. His legatees were his wife Jane, son Robert received land at Blackwater, and sons George, Arthur and Francis. His executors were his friends Maj. Nicholas Hill and Capt. John Grove.

s/s Robert Williamson and witnessed by John Hardy, Robert's step-father

On 9 Jun 1670 Robert's widow Jane Williamson presented the estate inventory to the court. A 9 Dec 1672 Isle of Wight Co, VA probate record showed the estate appraisal for Robert Williamson was apparently done at the home of Robert Burnett; Burrett married the widow of Robert Williamson, so it may be that Burnett had moved into Williamson's home or she into his. The Williamson estate was divided among the widow and four orphans by Robert Kae, Arthur Smith, Richard Sharpe and Robert Flake. Because the estate division referred to Williamson's children as orphans and his son Robert II was under age 18, Robert's sons were all likely under 18 years of age.

The 850 acres Robert Williamson left to his wife and then his eldest son Robert reverted to the state, perhaps because taxes were unpaid after Burnett took over the Williamson estate management or upon Burrett's death, and the estate was patented by Joseph Bridger on 22 Jul 1678. This was likely after Joseph's daughter Hester had married Joan Williamson Burnett's son George. The year Hester Bridger Williamson died, on 8 Aug 1683 her father Joseph Bridger, Esq., rented the 850 acres (left by Dr. Robert Williamson to Joan, his wife and then to his son Robert) to Joan, now the wife of Robert Burnett, deceased:
