Katherine Ruffin1

F, ID# 3096, (1634 - 24 Aug 1687)
Katherine Ruffin was born in 1634 at Kent, England. She married Arthur Whitehead I, son of Arthur Whitehead and Dorothy Lightowlers, in 1654 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. Katherine Ruffin married William Thornton a 1656. Katherine Ruffin married John Bathe a 1671. Katherine Ruffin died on 24 Aug 1687 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia.
On 9 Jun 1664 Katherine Thornton, age 30, was deposed in an Isle of Wight Co, VA lawsuit between William Ruffin and his eldest son Robert Ruffin. On 9 Jun 1670 William Ruffind deeded Katherine, who was likely his sister, 200 acres in Isle of Wight County.

According to researcher Bert Whitehead, in her nuncupative will recorded in Isle of Wight County, Katherine Ruffin Bathe left her legacies to her son-in-law Stephen Horsefield, his Rebecca and children; and, to son Arthur Whitehead whom she declared was "unnatural to her.” This phrase, unnatural to her, indicates that Arthur Jr was not her natural-born son, but was a step-son, whom she probably adopted after Arthur Sr’s untimely death when his son, Arthur Jr, was only about 7 years old.

Rachel (Unknown) was born a 1690. She married Col. William Whitehead I, son of Arthur Whitehead II and Mary Godwin, c 1709 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. Rachel (Unknown) died a 1765 at Halifax Co, North Carolina.
Rachel was unlikely to be the sister of Barnaby McKinne. She is known to be Rachel because she was named many times in her husband's numerous land transactions. William Whitehead was a miller in North Carolina and it was believed he married a sister of Barnaby McKinne who had mills in both Virginia and North Carolina. However, none of the numerous McKinne records support this hypothesis, and most particularly neither the remnants of the 1737 will of Col Barnaby McKinney or of the 1736 will of Barnabee MacKinne Jr ever mention Rachel who was still alive at that time.

--A 23 Apr 1761 Court document referred to the 13 Aug 1737 (sic) will of Col Barnaby McKinney and the impact of his land bequests to his sons Richard and John McKinney and his daughters Patience Lane, Mourning Pope and Christian Hurst.

--A 13 Oct 1736 (sic) transcript of the will of Barnabee MacKinne, Jr (reportedly copied into Grant Book 4 but not verified as such) noted wife Mary; daughters Patience and Mary MacKinne; Barnaby, son of Joseph Lane who is likely Patience Lane's son; John Pope who might be the husband of Mourning Pope; brothers William, Robert and John McKinne. This will was witnessed by John Crowell who was deposed in 1751 regarding a 17 Oct 1736 land sale made by Barnaby McKinne junior.

Rachel could be a McKinne from another McKinne family however.

There was a Michael MacQuinay, a planter from Western Branch, whose 16 Apr 1686 Isle of Wight Co will was probated 9 Aug 1686 and mentioned wife Elizabeth, eldest son John, youngest son Barnabie with witnesses Robert Cooper, Mary Daniel, Jeremiah Exum and John Moore and his wife as executrix. Jeremiah Exum was the father-in-law of Michael's son Barnaby. No mention was made of a daughter named Rachel.

Note that care needs to be taken in parsing records among the McKinne family members in Edgecombe Co, NC because of the reuse of given names among the generations.

After the last minute shuffling of land from Col. William Whitehood to and among his sons at his death, the land apportionment continued. On 16 Aug 1750 Joseph Whitehead, of Edgecombe Co, planter sold to Lazarus Whitehead, for divers good causes and considerations my herewith moving but more especially for the love and affection which I have and do bear unto my brother, Lazarus Whitehead, 200 acres of land granted to me by patent dated 17 Feb 37, beginning at a hickory on the north side of Swift Creek then south 20 east 60 poles then south 70 west 280 poles then north 20 west 160 poles to a white oak in the said creek then down the said creek to the first station, signed Joseph Whitehead, wit Richd Whitaker, Willm Whitehead. Edgecombe / Halifax Co Deed Book 3, p. 517, deed date 16 Aug 1750, recorded Aug Ct 1750) This land was actually patented to their father on 17 Feb 1737, not to Joseph.

The executors of Joseph Whitehead were ordered to appear in court and give an account of the estate in 1794 (?). John Bishop was appointed guardian in May 1799 of Joseph Whitehead, orphan of the desceased, replacing the former guardian Lewis Brantley who was deceased. The negroes were ordered sold per the will in 1796 but in Aug 1801 the negroes were ordered divided between Joseph Whitehead, son of the deceased, and Godwin Cotton, grandson of the deceased.      Arthur Whitehead was born on 30 Mar 1595 at Lancashire, England. He married Dorothy Lightowlers a 1617.
Arthur Whitehead, aka Arthure Whitehead, and Dorothy Lightowlers, daughter of Robert and Dorothy Lightowlers of Windy Bank in Rochdale, Lancaster, England are reported to be the parents of our immigrant but have not been proven.

Arthur Whitehead born 1595 is reported to be the son of Edmund Whitehead and Esabell Burrow who married 21 Jan 1595 in Whittington, Lancashire, England, two months before Arthur was born. Whittington - Parish Register 1538-1764 in Lancashire, England noted “Edmund Whithead, Born in Lancashire,England, 1571. Married at age 24, in 1595 to Isabell Burrow, 1595-01-21 in Lancashire, England. Died Jan 21 1596. in Lancashire England." This Edmund was the son of another Edmund and reportedly had a brother William Edmund Whitehead christened 4 Feb 1575 in Lancashire.

Robert Lightowlers of Windy Bank was buried at Rochdale on 6 Oct 1619, and by his will, dated 13th May in the same year he left his property to his son Richard, his daughters Anne Lightowlers and Dorothy, the wife of Arthur Whitehead, his son-in-law John Butterworth of Blackheath Hill, and his (the testator’s) wife Dorothy.       William Exum II received a patent for land in Isle of Wight Co, VA for 450 acres October 9, 1693 for the transportation of Nine persons, among them Samuel Browne. ("The descendants of Dr. Samuel Browne," compiled by Lucy Elliot Hollowell, Woodland, NC; May 1972, p. 22)

On 27 Mar 1671 William witnessed a power of attorney from William Bressy to Arthur Smith (Book 1, p. 232). On 9 Jun 1675 William witnessed a deed in Isle of Wight County. M, ID# 3118, (a 1645 - c 1701)
Father:Thomas Exum (a 1625 - )
Mother:Ann (Unknown) (a 1629 - )
William Exum I was born a 1645 at England. He was the son of Thomas Exum and Ann (Unknown). William Exum I married Jane Wills a 1669. William Exum I immigrated in 1699 to Virginia. He died c 1701 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 10 Feb 1700/1 at Isle of Wight Co, Virginia.
William Exum I was the father of Francis based on his immigration record with his son and the father of William II and Francis based on his will and the will of his son William II. William Exum I of the Upper Parish: legatees daughter Deborah Jones; wife Jane; son William land on the Blackberry; son Francis land on Blackwater. Wife executrix. Witnesses were Nathaniel Whitby and George Gurney.

William Exum was one of the first of this family in Virginia. William Exum, his wife Jane and his son Francis were listed on 26 Oct 1699 as headrights of Joseph Ellis, who received a patent for 250 acres in Nansemond County, which was formerly granted to Mr. William Tucker, Jan 6, 1642 and was deserted. ( Bk 9, p. 220) One researcher noted William has already been living in Virginia before 1699. It is not known if only Francis was a headright with his parents because he was the only child born or more likely that his two siblings were not available to be counted as headrights.

William Exum and Jane his wife were used as headrights of Richard Holiman in a patent for 1,230 acres on the south side of Black Water Swamp on 25 Apr 1702. ( Bk 9, p. 449) Jeremiah Exum, another early Virginia immigrant, in his will left a cow to his 'cousin' Jane Exum; presuming the Jane referred to is William's wife, this would indicate some relationship between William Exum and Jeremiah Exum.
