Father:Elias Duke (c 1785 - b 1840)
Mother:Emily "Milly" Francis Elkins (c 1786 - a 1860)
Charts:Virginia Custis Winslett lineage

Julia M. Dukes was born c 1816 at South Carolina. She was the daughter of Elias Duke and Emily "Milly" Francis Elkins. Julia M. Dukes married Cpl. Joel J. Talton, son of Joseph ? Talton, on 17 Feb 1833 at Clarke Co, Alabama. Julia M. Dukes married William Calton on 22 Mar 1846 at Macon Co, Alabama. Julia M. Dukes married Isaac Vestal on 15 Feb 1857 at Tallapoosa Co, Alabama. Julia M. Dukes died a 1866.
Julia Dukes, a widow with six small children and possibly pregnant, moved from Clarke Co, AL to Macon Co, AL where her brother Abraham resided. Julia was shown as Julia M. Tarlton when she was married to William Calton by William Shaw, justice of the peace in 1846 in Macon Co, AL; his name is not to be confused with Carlton. Although there are many Carltons in Macon Co, AL in the 1850s all of the William Carltons are shown with non-Julia wives and living past 1860 when Julia remarried again. Julia was listed as Juleer Calton in 1851 in St Stephens and Julier Catton in 1855 in Tallapoosa Co, AL.

Julia could not be found on the 1850 census after she married William Calton, using any of the names associated with William such as Calton, Carlton, Talton and Catton. After her third marriage, in the 1860 census Julia, enumerated as Julia Vestal, reported she was born in South Carolina; in the 1880 Tallapoosa Co, AL census Julia Dukes' daughter Matilda Jane Talton Winslett reported her mother was born in South Carolina; and in 1917 her son Joseph reported his mother was born in Alabama.

On 1 Oct 1851 Julia M. Calton of Macon bought 36 acres of public land in township 18 of range 24 through the Montgomery, AL land office. She was enumerated as Julier Calton in the 1855 Tallapoosa Co, AL state census approved on 17 Feb 1854, the year before. She was living with 3 males and 1 female under 21 (Joseph, Newton, James, Sarah) but no husband, so she was likely a widow when she purchased the land in 1851.

In 1857 Julia was noted as Julia Carlton when she married an Isaac Vestal; if this was Isaac Vestal senior he would have been 80 years old at that time. For two reasons this researcher postulated Isaac possibly could have had a namesake son, although Julia's marriage data did not state she married an Isaac Vestal junior. In the 1830 and 1840 censuses in Isaac's household there were three males, likely Isaac's sons, who are not in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Isaac's household. These three men would have been born between 1811 and 1825 making them more suitable in age to marry Julia and perhaps by 1860 to have died.

By 1860 Julia was living with her son Joseph J. Talton in Tallapoosa Co, AL, and the elderly Isaac Vestal was living a few doors away. Julia was living as Julia Vestal accompanied by her underage daughter Sarah in the household of her son Joseph J. Talton in 1860 in Tallapoosa Co, AL. A few doors from the Talton household, an all male Vestal family is living consisting of Isaac (a farmer, age 83, with $400 real estate and $500 household goods), Jessie (age 60), and Lungano (age 40, noted as an idiot) all of whom were born in North Carolina.

On the 1866 Tallapoosa Co, AL census Julia was enumerated as Julia Vestier, age 50-60, living next door to her son-in-law Jonathan Winslett. She is residing with one male age 10-20, likely her son James K. Calton. On the second 1866 census list she is rendered as Julia Vestill. Rita Talton Barnett found Isaac Vestal died that year and did not find Julia in records after 1866.

As to why Julia lived separately from Isaac, the elder Vestal may have been ill; this researcher has seen split households when a member was seriously ill with a contagious disease. Possibly Julia married a different Isaac Vestal because in 1866 the elderly Isaac was in Missouri and apparently another man named Isaac Vestal married in 1869. An Isaac Vestal married Janette Taylor 7 Jan 1869 in Tallapoosa Co, AL (familysearch.org) with Berry D. Johnson and Isaac Vestal providing security, so either the elderly Vestal lived on past the time of Julia's death and returned from Missouri or there were other men with the same name in the Tallapoosa Co.

George Fox Martin wrote a long memoir about his life. He described his experiences as a young boy during the presidential election of 1860, the succeeding tensions leading to the outbreak of the Civil War and various events particularly up to 1862. His father was active in campaigning for Lincoln and in raising troops for the Unionist cause, while other family members in Virginia took the Confederate side. These memories are mixed with considerations on the Civil War and current events in 1917.
