Philip Southall1,2,3,4,5

Father:Dasey Southall (c 1700 - 28 Jun 1767)
Mother:Edith Barrett (c 1691 - 20 Jan 1782)
Philip Southall was born on 10 Jul 1724 at England. He was the son of Dasey Southall and Edith Barrett. Philip Southall married Elizabeth 'Betty' (Unknown) a 1755. Philip Southall died on 12 Dec 1759 at Charles City Co, Virginia, at age 35. He was buried at Charles City Co, Virginia.
Philip Southall is presumed to be the father of Turner Southall based on research by noted historian and author Benjamin Weisiger and based on an undated family history written by Dr. James Southall, which credits Dr. Stephen Southall who was an Episcopal minister in Amelia Co, VA and a professional genealogist, and states in part "It is believed but not proved the eldest son ... was Capt. Turner Southall ... though the only proven son is William." (Virginia State Library Archives accession #27954)

Philip was noted in his parents' family bible as born 10 July 1726; this must be a transcription error as his sibling was born that year. Phillip was often in Charles City Co, VA court, including some appearances with his wife from 1747-1757. In 1754 he was the guardian of Jane Walker, who married in 1756 and was the daughter of James Walker, and the following year Philip was in court as the guardian of Mary Walker. Philip was a surveyor of roads in his sector of the county and served on juries in 1749 and 1755. In 1755 he was appointed a tobacco inspector for the warehouse.

Philip died young and his father and two brothers James Barrett and Turner Southall were the executors of his estate. According to the Charles City Co Order Book 4, all three executors were sued in Chancery Court by Benjamin Marable. This is of interest because our ancestor Fanny Shell of New Kent Co, VA had a note in her prayer book about Marables, the meaning of which is unclear.

COL Turner Southall (of Henrico)1,2,3,4

M, ID# 3623, (27 Aug 1734 - 27 Apr 1791)
Father:Dasey Southall (c 1700 - 28 Jun 1767)
Mother:Edith Barrett (c 1691 - 20 Jan 1782)
COL Turner Southall (of Henrico) was born on 27 Aug 1734 at Henrico Co, Virginia. He was the son of Dasey Southall and Edith Barrett. COL Turner Southall (of Henrico) married Martha Vanderwall, daughter of Nathaniel Vanderwall and (Unknown) Pleasants, on 3 Feb 1756. COL Turner Southall (of Henrico) died on 27 Apr 1791 at age 56. He was buried at Westham, Henrico Co, Virginia.
Col Turner Southall was noted in his parents' family bible as born 25 Jul 1736, but that date does not align with the information provided about his age at death. He was on the tithable list in Amelia Co, VA. In 1757 when he received 100 acres of Henrico Co, VA land from his father, Turner moved to Henrico Co and remained active in public affairs there for nearly thirty-five years. About 1760 he "laid off Richmond." In 1763 and 1765 he was appointed tobacco inspector at Shockoe's in Richmond, VA and in 1770 he was serving as a Henrico Co justice. During the American Revolution, he commanded Henrico Co, VA militia; the arsenal and public foundry at Westham was partially destroyed and Turner narrowly escaped capture there. For his service he received two bounty land patents; his widow Martha received a widow's pension.

As a result of an act of the General Assembly passed in May 1779 for moving the seat of government from Williamsburg to Richmond, Turner was appointed one of the first five Directors of Public Buildings, which included Turner Southall, James Buchanan, Archibald Cary, Robert Goode and Robert Carter Nicholas and to which the following year Richard Adams, Samuel DuVal, Thomas Jefferson and Edmund Randolph were added. From 1779 until his death he served as a state legislator serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate.

Turner was noted in Bishop Meade's "Old Churches and Families in Virginia" as a vestryman at the Mar 1785 first meeting at St. John's Church, Henrico Parish, Richmond, VA where he served as vestryman from 1785 until 1789.

Turner inherited from his father 417 acres in western Henrico Co, VA. The home currently on this property is assumed to have been built in 1775 based on Turner being one of the property's early owners. The nearby Reveille House is of unspecified mid-18th-century age, and the families of the Brick House (Reveille) have some intertwining by community association and marriage. Turner's complicated estate with 11 children involved ultimately resulted in an 1831 court-ordered public auction of the property on 22 Oct 1881. The auction notice described the property as 22 acres extending south to the Old Westham Turnpike or Plank Road (present-day West Cary Street). The improvements included a frame dwelling atop a brick English basement and other buildings "somewhat out of repairs." The land was noted as of excellent quality and commanding a fine view of the surrounding country. The house was notable becasuse the clapboard-sided structure sat further back and higher up than neighboring houses and magnificent trees provided shade. The present address is 3923 Grove Ave, Richmond, Henrico Co, VA. Turner is said to have been buried in the graveyard of his estate "Reveille" near Westham, VA; the old brick home outside Richmond, VA was built in 1720 on lands originally owned by the Kennons. Given that Turner inherited 417 acres, there were likely multiple homes on the land.

PVT Joseph Jasper "JJ" Talton1,2,3,4,5,6

M, ID# 3624, (18 Sep 1836 - 17 Sep 1917)
Father:Cpl. Joel J. Talton (a 1794 - b Mar 1846)
Mother:Julia M. Dukes (c 1816 - a 1866)
PVT Joseph Jasper "JJ" Talton was born on 18 Sep 1836 at Tallapoosa Co, Alabama. He was the son of Cpl. Joel J. Talton and Julia M. Dukes. PVT Joseph Jasper "JJ" Talton married Samantha Elizabeth "Lizzie" Foster, daughter of David Foster and Elizabeth Canady / Kenneday, on 9 Oct 1855 at Tallapoosa Co, Alabama. PVT Joseph Jasper "JJ" Talton died on 17 Sep 1917 at Sylacauga, Talladega Co, Alabama, at age 80. He was buried at Fayetteville Memorial Cemetery, Sylacauga, Talladega Co, Alabama.
Joseph Jasper Talton worked as an overseer. In 1860 Joseph J. Talton was living in Chanahatchy, Tallapoosa Co, AL with his wife Samantha, his 3 children, his sister Sarah Talton age 16, his mother Julia Vestal age 45 and Julia's son James K. Calton. Henceforth, of note is that some of their younger children were not always living at home during the census although they survived to adulthood.

Joseph enlisted in Company B, 47th Regiment, Tallapoosa Light Infantry, Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army on 5 Apr 1862 at Loachapoka, AL as a private. The 47th was assigned to MajGen Stonewall Jackson's Corp putting Joseph in a large number of major battles. His brother Newton served in the same company and was killed at their first battle on 9 Aug 1862 at Cedar Run. Subsequently Joseph fought in Virginia at 2nd Battle of Manassas, Chantilly, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredricksburg and Suffolk, before moving north to Gettysburg, then south again to the battle at Chicamauga, Knoxville, and East Tennessee. Moving north again to Virginia on 4 May 1864 at "The Wilderness" battle Joseph was shot in the left side and right arm -- later changed to right hand when he stated he could not make a living on his pension. Whether he recovered sufficiently to participate in the battle at Spottsylvania, Richmond, Petersburg or Appomattox Court House. From the date of his enlistment Joseph served continuously for three years before taking leave to visit family. When the leave ended he was unable to make it back to his unit by 10 Feb 1865 because Sherman's forces occupied Virginia territory and Joseph was charged as being absent without leave, which was later dismissed. He was honorably discharged 10 Apr 1865 or 19 May 1865, depending on the document. he applied for the various funds approved for Civil War veterans over the years. His 1897-1899 pension applications showed he was a farmer with no real estate and 1 horse or mule, 1 cow, 3 hogs/sheep/goats, a watch and household furniture. By the time of his 10 Feb 1899 pension application his age was 65. When Joseph was deposed in 1908 for his miltary pension he stated he was born 18 Sep 1828 and was over 80 years old; no other documents before that time support an 1828 birth. Two years later for the 1910 census Joseph reported he was age 81, supporting the concept of an 1828-1829 birth. However, this researcher continued to presume and 1835 birth. Joseph received a pension.

Joseph, age 35, was enumerated on the 1870 Daviston,Tallapoosa Co, AL census living with his family next door to his brother-in-law Jonathan Winslett and his sister Matilda Talton Winslett. By 1880 Joseph, age 45, was on the Hackneyville, Tallapoosa Co, AL census with his family, living close to other family members such as his sister Matilda Talton Winslett, other Winslett families, the Chaffins, and several Strong families.

Sandwiched between the John and George Strong families and the Joesph Talton family in the 1880 Tallapoosa Co, AL census, was a Betsie Futral, age 63 born in Georgia with her father and mother born in Ireland and Georgia respectively. Betsie Futral is shown living with Martha J. age 38, Andrew J. age 26, Sarah M. age 32, Mary E. age 29, Nancy G. age 24, John M. age 22, and Neomie E. age 21 -- with the eldest child born in Georgia and all the rest born in Alabama. Living next door to Betsie Futral is her son Benjamin with his wife Sarah S. and their son James F.

The relationship between the Futrals and our Taltons was that Nancy Futural later married Willis Talton and Thomas Jefferson Futral married Araminta Talton. Additionally, William E. Futral age 33 with parents born in Georgia and a wife Louisa G. age 24 with parents born in Alabama and children Anna and Willis were living next door to Joel Harper Winslett.

By 1900 Joseph, age 63, was enumerated in Wewoka, Talladega Co, AL with his wife noted as Lizzie Talton and their two youngest children, whose ages were recorded incorrectly. Although Joseph and Lizzie reported marrying in 1860 instead of 1855, this researcher was confident this couple was Joseph and Samantha because their reported birth dates match our ancestors. Also living five doors away was Joseph's son Willis with his family.

By 1910 Joseph and Samantha were still in Talladega Co, AL where he was renting a farm that he worked; he reported he was older than he actually was and his wife reported her exact age. In both the 1900 and 1910 census they reported 7 of their 11 children were alive. By 1910 their divorced daughter Louella and her 2 daughters Ola and Rada were also residing there.

Disa 'Dicey' 'Dicy' McMichael1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

F, ID# 3626, (24 Feb 1786 - 1876)
Father:Unknown McMichael (a 1756 - )
Mother:Margaritte 'Peggy' Cahoon (1767 - 20 Jul 1851)
Charts:Joel Harper Winslett lineage
Disa 'Dicey' 'Dicy' McMichael was born on 24 Feb 1786 at Greene Co, Georgia. She was the daughter of Unknown McMichael and Margaritte 'Peggy' Cahoon. Disa 'Dicey' 'Dicy' McMichael married Samuel Winslett II, son of 1st Lt. Samuel Winslett I and Mary Carson, on 17 Jan 1808 at Greene Co, Georgia. Disa 'Dicey' 'Dicy' McMichael died in 1876 at Troup Co, Georgia. She was buried at Russell Co, Alabama.
Disa "Dicey" McMichael was in the care of her step-father William Winslett, son of Samuel Winslett and Mary Carson, during the 1805 Greene Co, GA land lottery.

Disa was the step-granddaughter and daughter-in-law of our immigrant ancestor Samuel Winslett (1744-1829) through his son William and his son Samuel II respectively.

In the 1850 Russell Co, AL census Disa was listed as Disa Winslette head of household with an extended multi-generational family living both with her and next door. Two of her daughters, Harriet and Sarah, were living with her as was her son William Milton, his wife Elizabeth Royal and his four children by Elizabeth born in Alabama: Rebecca, Samuel, Disa and John. Most confusing to many researchers were another four male children in Disa's household in 1850 -- all born in Georgia outside Disa's childbearing years -- who by the process of elimination were likely from a first marriage of her son William Milton and were listed as James, Samuel, William and David Winslett. Disa's widowed daughter Mary Piper was also living next to her as was her daughter Martha Royal with her family.

Also in the 1850 Russell Co census, of interest is the Ann Byrd family living two doors from Disa. Ann was a 39-year old farmer born in North Carolina with her children born in Alabama living with her: Melvin age 10, Charles age 8, Thomas age 7, Malala age 3 and Henry age 2. Disa's son John married Elizabeth Bird. How Ann Byrd and Elizabeth Bird might be related is unknown, however Elizabeth had numerous brothers.

By the time of the 1860 Russell Co census, Disa was enumerated Disef Winslett, living with her daughter Harriet Elizabeth, and was noted as having a personal estate worth $8000. She was living next to her apparently widowed daughter Sarah Winslett Killum and her family; her son William Milton and his family; her widowed daughter-in-law Mary Winslett Piper and her family; and a W.F.M. Winslett age 28 who one researcher hypothesized may be one of Disa's sons. On the 1860 Russell Co, AL Slave Schedule, a Disey Winslet was noted with female slaves age 34, 19, 16, 11, 3 and male slaves aged 14, 6 and 1.

By 1866 Disa Winsles [sic] age 80-90 is living in Russell Co with one unknown male age 40-50 and one unknown female age 20-30. Still living next door was her widowed daughter Sarah Winslett Killiam [sic] with 1 male and 1 female under 10 and 1 female 10-20. Also next door was her son William Milton Winsles [sic] with his family. Her widowed daughter-in-law Mary Winslett Piper is gone. In the second 1866 Russell Co census, the purpose of which was unclear to this researcher, Disa is no longer enumerated -- but she is not living in her son William Milton Winslett's household; Sarah Winslett Killiam's household had an additional unknown female age 10-20 residing with her; and an additional unknown William Winsles [sic] with a female both aged over 30 is listed living six doors away from William Milton Winslett, and who is possibly his son.

By 1870 Disa resided next door to her daughter Martha Winslett Royal in Auburn, Lee County, Alabama.

Edmond Jackson Winslett1,2,3,4,5,6,7

M, ID# 3628, (c 1810 - 3 Mar 1890)
Father:Samuel Winslett II (1787 - b 1850)
Mother:Disa 'Dicey' 'Dicy' McMichael (24 Feb 1786 - 1876)
Edmond Jackson Winslett was born c 1810 at Greensboro, Greene Co, Georgia. He was the son of Samuel Winslett II and Disa 'Dicey' 'Dicy' McMichael. Edmond Jackson Winslett married Mary 'Polly' Piper on 10 Nov 1830 at Troup Co, Georgia. Edmond Jackson Winslett married Mary Jane Powell on 24 Jan 1856 at China Grove, Pike Co, Alabama. Edmond Jackson Winslett died on 3 Mar 1890 at Osage, Texas.
Edmond Jackson Winslett is presumed to be the son of Samuel and Dicey Winslett. He also used the names Edmund, E. J., Ed and Ned. He was a farmer and overseer. Edmond and Mary Jane Powell were married by J. W. Harris, a justice of the peace.

Edmond and his wife were on the 1850 census living with 3 males and 1 female under age 21 and 1 male over 21 [apparently not Edmond given the household total of 7.]

Edmond served as a Captain of Militia, Troup Co, GA from October 1833 until May 1836. In 1836 he served three months in the Creek Indian War as a private or third corporal in Captain Gunn's Company, Webb Battalion, Chambers Co, Alabama Mounted Militia Infantry. He resided in Greene Co, GA; Meriwether Co, GA; Chambers Co, AL; Barbour Co, AL; Lee Co, AL; Macon Co, AL; and Tallapoosa Co, AL.

The 1866 Macon Co, AL census as an E. J. Winslett, presumed to be Edmond Jackson Winslett, age 51-60 [born 1806-1815] residing with 2 males and 2 females under 10 [Cater, Edmund, Lucy, unknown female]; 1 unknown female age 10-20; and one female age 31 - 40 [wife Mary Jane Powell]; possibly the two unknown females are children of Mary Jane Powell's by her first marriage. On another 1866 census list he is enumerated as E. J. WenslettLiving two doors away was the James M. Winslett family age 31 - 40 [born 1826 - 1835] living with 2 males and 2 females under 10; 2 males between the age of 10 - 20; 1 female age 10-20; and a female age 31-40; this James M. Winslett has not yet been identified. Also in 1866 in Macon Co, AL was L. M. Winslett and his wife living with 2 males and 2 females under 10; 2 males and 1 female between the age of 10 - 20; this L. M. Winslett has not yet been identified.

Edmond moved from Dadeville, Tallapoosa Co, AL to Crawford and Gatesville, TX taking with him the youngest three of his children.

It is unclear to which part of the Winslett family the following extract refers to : When the Winsletts arrived in Wilson Co, TX from Alabama they brought a new method of harvesting cotton. The Winsletts dragged heavy sacks between the rows rather than filling an apron and emptying it frequently into a central basket. With the new method, harvesting seventy-five pounds of cotton was considered a good day's work.
