William Hunt I1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

M, ID# 4001, (1599 - 11 Nov 1676)
Charts:Gertrude Ellis Shell lineage
William Hunt I was born in 1599. He married Anne (Unknown) a 1649. William Hunt I died on 11 Nov 1676. He was buried at 'Batchelors Point', Charles City Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 16 Nov 1678 at Charles City Co, Virginia.
The Hunt family of Charles City Co, VA is one of our most confusing family lines because the typical reuse of family given names was compounded by the younger of two men with the same name dying before the older; specifically, John Hunt our 8th great grandfather was proceeded in death by the younger John Hunt, his nephew. Further there were William Hunt lines in both Charles City Co and Surry Co, with both lines owning land in Surry Co and with both lines with children named William, John, George and Mary. Because of the multiplicity of crossovers, extreme care must be taken in accepting any data not aligned with what has been uncovered to date by researchers Michael Berry and Catherine Gheesling. Find-a-grave data appears to have comingled various William Hunts and their children.

William Hunt I was known as a planter, merchant, and wheelwright -- specifically as the "Wheelwright of Buckland" in Westover Parish, Charles City Co. Given William's age at his marriage to Ann, that was likely his second marriage. It is speculative William's wife's name was (Sarah) Anne (Harris?) and her parents were believed to be William Harris senior and Alice Smith/Smythe.

William frequently was noted in court records. On 3 Dec 1656 William bought 300 acres from Rice Hoe II in James City Co, VA when he was living at "Buckland," which was located on the north side of the James River in Charles City Co, VA. The land was bordered on the west by a creek formerly known as as David Jones Creek, southerly on the main river, and along the lands of Rice Hoe, deceased, and James Warrandine.

William purchased 215 acres on 31 Oct 1656 in James City Co, VA "...being part of a greater parcell purchased by Wm. Hunt, father of the aforesd, of Rice Hoe."

Court orders state William was paid 350 pounds tobacco by the Oliver Hunt estate in 1657; appointed to collect the Governor's corn between Herring and Old Man's creeks in Charles City Co, VA in 1661; and deeded John Clarke 300 acres of the Hoe tract in 1663. William patented 346 acres in Charles City Co, VA in 1665. From 1658 through 1665 he was on county jury lists. In 1665 William, noted as a wheelwright in Charles City Co, VA. He purchased 450 acres in Merchants Hope from Patrick Jackson in 1665; some of this land was originally owned by Thomas Douglas.

William was a principal supporter of the rebel Nathaniel Bacon, although William's family characterized him as a sympathizer. In 1660 prominent Col Edward Hill of "Shirley" plantation in Charles City Co who was the fourth husband of our 11th great grandmother Tabitha Scarburgh, a Custis line ancestor from the Eastern Shore, had a warrant sworn against William, who was our 10th great-grandfather. William refused to respond. After the rebellion began, William was apparently incarcerated and died in jail in 1676 at age 77. William's tombstone establishes his birth and death dates. The Hunt family cemetery at Bachelors Point is apparently located on a hill on the land where William resided on the north bank of the James River near Kennon's Creek, which was originally known as David Jones Creek as well as Swans Neck Creek. Between 1642 and 1724, Bachelors Point was part of Wallingford Parish, James City Co and later became part of Westover Parish, Charles City Co. Today this area lies between Sherwood Forest Plantation and the Chickahominy Wilderness Management Area, off of State Route 5.

William's wife Ann eventually succeeded in having William found not guilty as shown by her 1677 petition: "By petition of Anne Hunt widow and relict of William Hunt of Charles City County, deceased on behalfe of herselfe and two children [note: unclear if there were only two children ever born or only two children left at home if the older sons were apprenticed.] Complaining that the honorable Governor, being falsely informed that the said Hunt the Petitioners husband had bin actually in the late rebellion did after his death and without any indictment, tryall or conviction seize the estate of the Petitioner and her children, which had bin getting 25 yeares by the onest pains & hard labbour of the decedent and the aged petition and the same removed and caryed to green Springe. [Green Spring was the name of William Berkley's estate, so the cargo was confiscated by the Governor and taken to his home.] That the Better to Color the said doeings the Governor hath caused a Bill of Attainder to pass the last grand Assembly, whereby the Petitioners Estate without soe much as having the Petitioner or any other for her is adjudged forfeited to his Majestie. Now for as much as the said William Hunt was never in armes against his Majestie or authority nor ever encourgage, aided or abeted the same; and ever a peaceable and good Subject of his Majestie. And for that by the laws of England a man slaine or otherwise dyinge in open Rebellion before attainder forfeits noe part of his Estate: And the Petitioner beinge informed that this plantation of Virginia cannot or ought not to make any laws repugnant to those of his Majesties Realme of England. The Poor Petitioner humbly Implores his Majestie would be pleased to putt a stop to or cause the said act of attainder to be taken of as to your Petitioners said Estate, and that his Majestie in his Royall Mercy will be gratiously please to permit her and her children to enjoye the same for their Support and Maintenance and without which they are most Miserable." (Samuel Wiseman's Book of Record: The Official Acount of Bacon's Rebellion.)

The Grand Assembly referred to above in Feb 1677 specifically identified William Hunt as a "principal ayder and abetter of the said Nathaniel Bacon" who like the rebel "dyed alsoe before the rebells were reduced to their allegiance to his majestie by which said meanes the said Nathaniell Bacon, junr ... and William Hunt have escaped their due and just demerits for their wicked and unheard of treasons and rebellions."

Goods William Hunt had brought to Virginia to sell were still aboard Nicholas Prynee's ship the "Richard and Elizabeth" at the time of William's death. Prynne also petitioned that Assembly that the goods in question be returned to Prynne....possibly because they were not paid for. "Settinge forth that Alderman Booth of London and Company beinge owners of the said ship, consigned to one William Hunt their factor in Virginia a cargoe of goods to the value of 265 lb sterling to make sale and returne of for their proper account; for which goods the Petitioner Mr. Prynne gave bill of lading and is thereby accountable for the same. Prayes restitution of the goods and Redress of the wrong and damage."

The following miscellaneous Hunt records are compiled here should they prove useful in the future in further defining the Hunt family line:

Charles City Co, VA court orders from 1660 through the 1670s show a William Hunt, who may be this ancestor, who was very active in the county. This William Hunt was the subject of debt litigation with Robert Burgess and a court case with Richard Pardon in 1660; granted payment of debts in 1662 by Nicholas Gatby; ordered in 1662 to pay Anthony Tall; ordered in 1663 to pay a sum to John Holmwood; involved with Mr Aston in paying 861 pounds of tobacco in 1663; subject of a 1664 nonsuit granted to John Gilham; and granted a 1665 attachment on the Langworth estate for 2,092 pounds of tobacco. In 1673 a William Hunt was in court concerning Cedar Point located on Buckland plantation.

William was likely English. Dozens of William Hunts were born in England circa 1599 including many in that particular year, so there is no way to prove who his parents are without finding additional primary source documentation or a bible record.

According to one unsourced account William was the son of Richard Hunt 1558-31 Dec 1616 both in Halifax, Yorkshire, England who on 21 Jan 1576 in North Bovey, Devon, England married Sarah Tyler Grindsdith 1556 England-26 Sep 1622 Tottenham, Middlesex, England; without sources this data is of no use.

According to an unsourced find-a-grave biography, William was born in Heathfield, Sussex, England to Robert Hunt (1569, England -- 1608, James City Co, VA) and Elizabeth Edwards (married 1564 in Somerset, England) and William sailed to Virginia on the ship "Abraham" in 1635, and then lived in Isle of Wight Co, VA and Westover Parish, Charles City Co, VA. He settled at Kennon's Warehouse, later known as Wilson's Landing, on the James River. Kennon's Warehouse was the location of one of the two public tobacco warehouses in Charles City, Charles City Co, VA. However, the immigrant who came in 1635 was born circa 1614 instead of in 1599 so either our ancestor was born a different year of this is a different man; also our ancestor William never lived in Surry or Isle of Wight counties. The account of this birth goes on to describe Robert Hunt dying in America in 1608, way before his son William supposedly immigrated.

The records found for William Hunts arriving in Virginia and patenting land may represent a single person or multiple people. Immigration records to Virginia show a William Hunt(s) born circa 1614 (about a generation after when our ancestor was reportedly born) and age about 21 arriving in a ship from England in 1635 in Virginia; receiving a 1636 patent on the western branch of the Nansemond River using the headrights of Philip Thomas, Evan Thomas and Michael McKinnie; being annotated as transported to Virginia and receiving a land patent in 1638; receiving a land patent in 1649 and being noted as an early immigrant receiving a patent in 1651. Whether these are the same man at each event is not known.

During the 1660s through the 1670s, other Hunts appeared in court: Thomas Hunt was granted an attachment against Nicholas Perry in 1660; a John Hunt was in court in 1655; and the Honorable James Hunt was apparently imported in 1655. Whether these three men are related to William Hunt is unknown.

MAJ William Hunt II1,2,3,4,5,6

M, ID# 4002, (a 1657 - c 1714)
Father:William Hunt I (1599 - 11 Nov 1676)
Mother:Anne (Unknown) (a 1626 - a 1695)
MAJ William Hunt II was born a 1657. He was the son of William Hunt I and Anne (Unknown). MAJ William Hunt II married Tabitha (Unknown) c 1682. MAJ William Hunt II died c 1714 at Charles City Co, Virginia. His estate was probated in 1715 at Charles City Co, Virginia.
Maj. William Hunt is not to be confused with the William Hunt who married Judith Burton.

Our William Hunt patented large tracts of land in Virginia in Charles City, James City and Surry counties. Researcher Michael Berry noted that at that time Charles City Co was on both sides of the James River as opposed to just the north side as it is today, so William may have lived on either side of the river but within what was then Charles City Co.

William was continually in court. He was in Charles City Co, VA court in 1677 to witness a document. In 1678 William went to court to probate his father's will. In 1678 and 1679 he served on jury duty many times. In 1679 William was in court six times as plaintiff and defendant on his own behalf and later that year was in court for his father's estate. In 1683 he patented 675 acres in James City Co. In 1688 William was in court again three times and the following year was in court again three times and once again to register his livestock brand. In 1690 he was in court again six times. Later that year William made the weights and scales for the county for a price of 1625 pounds of tobacco.

William was commissioned captain in the Charles City Co militia between 20 Oct 1691 and 29 Apr 1692. He patented 159 acres in Charles City Co, VA in 1691. William was proposed as a justice for the north side of the county in 1692, but William never sat as a justice in the county court through at least 1695, although his home was used for court meetings twice in 1692.

In 1692, the first year town lots were available for sale in the new Charles Town, William bought the half-acre lot number 50. That year he also patented 908 acres in Wynoak Parish in Charles City Co and 610 acres in James City Co, VA. In 1692, Captain William Hunt's house was designated as a meeting house to settle the bounds of James City and Charles City counties.

In 1693 William patented 215 acres of his father William senior's James City Co "Hoe tract," indicating his father's original sale of the land defaulted. In 1693 Captain Hunt was assigned as overseer of highways for North Wynoake. He was also in court five times in 1693-1695. William became a Charles City Co justice of the Quorum Court in 1699 and was commissioned a gentleman justice in 1702.

In Charles City Co he patented 4,342 acres in 1701 on both sides of the Nottoway River; when taxed and when sold by his heirs this land was in Surry Co, VA. By 1704 tax lists stated William Hunt owned 3,130 acres in Charles City Co, 4,042 in Surry Co, and 1,300 in James City Co. He achieved the rank of major about 1705.

William patented 140 acres on the south side of the Main Blackwater Swamp on 19 Dec 1711 and 190 acres on Long Meadow Branch in Surry Co, VA. On 1 Apr 1714 he and his wife Tabitha sold sold some of the Nottoway River land in Surry Co.

William signed his will on 14 May 1714, and the estate was inventoried with his wife present. His wife Tabitha's estate was inventoried in Jun 1717.
William left large estates to his sons John and George; the Charles City and Surry counties properties were divided between John and George. William left at least 100 and 200 acres in Albermarle Parish on the Nottoway River in Surry Co to daughters Mary and Ann respectively. William's will cannot be found but was referred to in 1744 when his son-in-law John Macon who married his daughter Ann Hunt sold 200 acres on the north side of the Nottoway River, Albemarle Parish, Surry Co which she inherited from her father.

Tabitha (Unknown) was born a 1662. She married MAJ William Hunt II, son of William Hunt I and Anne (Unknown), c 1682. Tabitha (Unknown) died c 1717 at Charles City Co, Virginia. Her estate was probated in Jun 1717 at Charles City Co, Virginia.
Tabitha, Maj William Hunt's wife, was reportedly either a Minge, an Edloe or she may have been Tabitha (Underwood) Bowler, widow of Maj Thomas Bowler who died in 1679; this would have made her a half sister to John Edloe. Michael Berry researched the Edloe papers at the Virginia Historical Society and the 3rd edition of Adventurers of Purse and Person, which has the definitive Edloe lineage, without finding Tabitha.
