CPT Adam Thorowgood I was born c 1603 at Grimston, Norfolk Co, England. He was the son of Vicar William Thorowgood and Anne Edwards. CPT Adam Thorowgood I was christened on 14 Jul 1604 at Saint Botolph's, Grimston, Norfolk Co, England. He immigrated in 1621. He married Sarah Offley, daughter of Robert Offley II and Anne Osborne, on 18 Jul 1627 at Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, England. CPT Adam Thorowgood I died at Elizabeth City, Virginia. His estate was probated on 27 Apr 1640.
Adam Thorowgood was a colonist and community leader in the Virginia Colony who helped settle the area of South Hampton Roads known in contemporary times as the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia. To pay for his passage to America, Adam traveled to Virginia on the "Charles" in 1621 as an indentured servant at the age of seventeen. He was listed in the 1623/4 census at Elizabeth City and was also there in 1624/5 when he was noted as age 18 and was listed as a servant in the 7 Feb 1624/25 muster of Edward Waters at Elizabeth City, VA; he was shown as Adam Thorogood age 18 who came on the Charles in 1621 in Edward Waters' Muster.

As Captain Adam Thorowgood, Gentleman of Kiquotan, he purchased 150 acres on the north side of Hampton Roads from John Gundry on 30 Dec 1626.

Adam then returned to England and was married. Returning to Virginia with his wife he was appointed on 7 Mar 1628/9 one of the commissioners for holding monthly courts at Elizabeth City, VA; served as Burgess for Elizabeth City in 1629 and for the Lower Part of Elizabeth City in 1630-32; and served in the Council in 1637-38. In 1629-30 when the Council and Governor determined to open Chiskyacke for settlement and desired a company of men there to plant corn, Adam volunteered to supply four men for the purpose. He also became a captain in the local militia and started the first ferry service in Hampton Roads.

Adam patented an additional 400 acres in Elizabeth City Co, VA on 21 Mar 1634/5. On 6 Aug 1634 the Privy Council directed a letter to the Governor and Council of Virginia recommending Adam Thorowgood, Gentleman, for special services and industries performed for the good of the colony, be allowed land on the Chesapeakean River to the southward to the Bay, where it may be most convenient for him. Adam received a patent on 24 Jun 1635 for 5,350 acres along the Lynnhaven River in the area which became Lower Norfolk County in 1637, due him for his personal adventure, for that of his wife Sarah and for transportation at his own charge of 105 settlers into the colony between 1628 and 1634. With this large land grant, Capt. Thorowgood with his family moved from the north side of Hampton Roads to Lynnhaven, where about 1635 he began the construction of a small brick house.

Adam was a member of the first court held for Lower Norfolk County on 15 May 1637 and met with the court as a member on 21 Nov 1638 at the house of Mr. Julian. Adam was an early vestryman of Lynnhaven Parish and on 15 May 1637, before the church was built, a penance was ordered performed at the dwelling house of Capt Thorowgood. The first church of Lynnhaven Parish was built in 1639 on Adam's land at Church Point on the west side of the Western Branch of Lynnhaven River. His 17 Feb 1639 will named his wife, Sarah, son Adam and daughters Ann, Sarah and Elizabeth and requested his body be buried in the parish church at Lynnhaven near his children.
