Walter Powell1,2

M, ID# 4950, (c 1626 - 1696)
Walter Powell was born c 1626. He married Margaret Berry c 1668. Walter Powell died in 1696 at Somerset Co, Maryland. His estate was probated on 4 Feb 1696 at Somerset Co, Maryland.
Walter Powell came to Somerset Co, MD from Accomack, VA in about 1670 seeking religious tolerance in Maryland. One of the first Maryland settlers, he was a planter and a gentleman of substance and social position in Somerset Co, MD where he purchased lands in 1670 called Greenfield, Middle and Exchange near the headquarters of the Pokomoke River on the north side. He lived at Greenfield plantation on the Pokomoke River. A Quaker, Willliam also allowed his son to be baptized, which Quakers do not, thus he mixed relligious observances.

Among other properties Walter owned in Somerset Co, MD were 256-acre Powell's Inclusion, 443-acre Powell's Lott, 200-acre Winter Quarter, 112-acre Powell's Recovery, 50-acre Powell's Addition, 150-acre Friends Gift, 250-acre Powell's Mill Pond, 140-acre Hilliars Discovery and 150-acre Olivins Portion. Walter's extensive land holdings and the intermarriages of his children with some of the best families in Maryland and Virginia indicate his importance in the county and the state. By will he requested to be buried in the Quaker burying ground.
