James Plunkett1,2

Father:Charles Plunkett (1725 - b 1790)
Mother:Hannah Cleland (1729 - 1794)
Charts:Amanda Ola Weathers lineage
James Plunkett was born in 1752 at Ninety Six District ?, South Carolina. He was the son of Charles Plunkett and Hannah Cleland. James Plunkett married Elizabeth Galloway, daughter of Peter Galloway, on 26 Oct 1774 at South Carolina. James Plunkett died on 12 Aug 1814 at Barnwell Co, South Carolina.
"Ten Thousand Plunketts" recounts James Plunkett was the son of Charles senior, the progenitor, and Hannah. In Aug 1772 James received a head right of 100 acres on the draughts of Beaver Dam Creek, a branch of the Saluda River, bounded by James Jones, Gideon Jones and vacant land. (SC Archives, Vol 19, p 102 or 202). James Plunkett and his wife Elizabeth later sold the 100 acres on Beaver Dam Creek to Benjamin Wood.

"Ten Thousand Plunketts" goes on to say James' younger brother Charles junior was born in 1760 (1760 is too late to acquire land in 1772); was given 100 acres of land through his father's will; received 100 acres head right in the 96th Districe on the NW side of Long Cane Creek on 4 Aug 1772; and was on the 1790 Newberry Co, SC census with his wife Sarah Evans and children. Charles junior's children in his 1829 will were Hannah Cleland, George and his wife Elizabeth; Sarah who married a Lewis; Ounis (or Owens), Phoebe wife of John Murcock, Dave and his wife Jane; Nathaniel, a minor; and Katherine who married Robert Boyd.

"Ten Thousand Plunketts" noted James' brother William was given 100 acres of land through his father's will. He was listed in the 1790 Newberry Co, SC census with one male over 16 (himself) and 2 females, one being his wife Sarah. on 4 Aug 1772 he was given a 100 acre grant in the 96th District on the northwest side of Long Cane Creek bounded by the lands of Alex Noble, James Patterson, John McFarland and vacant land. William's will was proved 3 Jan 1828.

James Plunkett received payment for provisions furnished the Continental Army under Revolutionary Claim 5987; the account was audited under the name of James Plunket (series S108092, reel 118, frame 518). Thus James Plunkett was included for his patriotic service under ancestor number A131974, born circa 1752 - died 12 Aug 1814 in the Barnwell District of SC. Documentation shows associated applications were for his son James whose spouse was listed as Judith.

The 1778 -1779 Jury Lists of District Ninety-Six, South Carolina included James Plunkett.

In Aug 1788 Robert Clealand received a plat for 110 acres on the Beaver Dam Creek, 96th District, off the Saluda River, adjacent to the land of Michael Burtz, Robert Clealand, Calab Gilbert, James Plunket and Thomas Waters, who was the surveyor. (Series S213190, vol 23, p. 156)

In the 1810 Barnwell Co, SC census James Plunkett was a household showing 1 female under 10, 1 female and 3 males age 10 - 15, 2 females age 16 - 25, one male 26 - 44, one male and one female over age 45.

In Nov 1812 James Plunkett senior deeded James Plunkett junior both of Barnwell Disctrict, SC received 677 acres in the district bordered by the land of Mary Johnson, Jumping Branch and Shaw's Creek Swamp, having originally been part of the 2,554 acre grant to Elias Leggett. Similarly he deeded from the same tract 524 acres to his son Charles also of the same district land bordered by the land of Mary Johnson, James Jackson, Henry Feazler, and Jumping Run. Next James senior deeded his son John 200 acres from a tract of 400 acres he received from John Deen on Shaw's Creek, Joices (?) Branch. These three deeds were witnessed by Lewis B. Jernigen and Peter Plunkett. James senior also deeded his daughter Elizabeth personal property followed by other deeds to his sons.

James Pluckett is known to be the father of Margaret, the wife of James Glenn, because of the following deed: "Know all men by these present that we Peter Galloway, Marget Glen, Peter Plunket, Jacob Cockrun, James Plunkit, John Galloway, Joshuay Seglar, Charls Plunket and John Plunket of the State of South Carolina and the District of Barnwell for and in consideration the love, good will and affection which we have and do share toward our beloved mother Elizabeth Plunkett, of the same place do give, grant, sign, deed, ratifyand forever set on unto the said Elizabeth Plunket, the wife of James Plunket of Barnwell District, deceased, and we do give unto Elizabeth Plunket, the wife of James Plunket deceased, all the horses, cattel, sheap and hogs, household and kitchen furniture, plantation tools and crops and all the casks on hand belonging to the estate of the deceased at his own disposal and we the hiers of said James Plunket deceased hath hereunto set our hands and seals this 14th day of December 1820. During this same period there were men named James Plunkett in Virginia and North Carolina.
-- In 1777 a James Plunket in Virginia enlisted under Capt. Presly Thornton as a private in Colonel Baylor's Regiment of Light Dragoons for three years and died in the service (signed statement of Presly Thornton, 19 Jun 1799). This statement was the basis for assigning a bounty land warrant to James Plunket. (Bounty Land Records, Library of Virginia) This James cannot be our ancestor because he reportedly did not survive the war.

Charles Plunkett1

M, ID# 5326, (1725 - b 1790)
Father:Capt Peter Plunkett (a 1698 - b 1790)
Charts:Amanda Ola Weathers lineage
Charles Plunkett was born in 1725 at Ireland. He was the son of Capt Peter Plunkett. Charles Plunkett married Hannah Cleland a 1750. Charles Plunkett died b 1790 at Newberry Co, South Carolina.
Charles Plunkett and his wife Hannah were first living between the towns of Orange Court House -- now known as Orange -- and Culpeper in Virginia. Tradition is the Plunketts first residence in South Carolina was at Four Holes, not far from Charleston, in an area known for malaria.

Charles next moved his family to Old Barnwell District, part of which is now Aiken Co, SC, and settled near Merritt's Bridge on the Edisto River in an area now known as Boy Scout Camp Long. Charles must have been living there in the 1760s because in 1772 he received a King George III land grant in Newberry County, SC. (Ten Thousand Plunketts, p. 27)

On 19 Nov 1772 Charles Plonkett received a 300 acre land grant from King George III on Little River and Saluda River in South Carolina. (Royal Grants of Land, SC Archives Department, Vol 19, p. 199, Aug 1772) The Plunketts were some of the earliest settlers in Newberry County, SC and lived in the Old Kadesh community. (John Chapman, "Annals of Newberry County," Aull & Houseal, Newberry, SC, 1892, part 2, p. 511-515).

Charles and Hannah had the following children listed in his will: Robert born circa 1750 and married Margaret Murdock; James; William born circa 1760; Charles born circa 1772; Elizabeth who married John Cleland; and John born circa 1775.

"Ten Thousand Plunketts" noted Charles Plunkett was the son of Captain Peter Plunkett of Ireland.

Charles was born in Ireland and he eventually settled in Virginia with his parents. His first move to South Carolina was at Four Holes, not too far from Charleston. This was malaria country and not very healthy, so Charles probably did not stay there many years. Charles moved into the Merritt's Bridge (on the Edisto River) area, near Aiken, S.C. (then Barnwell County or District) in 1762. He cleared the land and farmed until 1785, when Peter junior, his brother, came and bought land from him. Peter junior, the brother to Charles, is the progenitor of most of the Plunketts in and around Aiken, S.C. and Augusta, Georgia. [1]

Charles Plunkett, after selling his land to his brother Peter, moved to the Beaver Dam Creek area near the Saluda River in Newberry Co, S.C. He had about 300 acres in this area, granted to him by King George III of England. Charles was married to Hannah. Hannah's maiden name is not certain but it is believed to have been Cleland. Their children Robert, James, William, Charles, John and one daughter, Elizabeth (m. John Cleland) were named in their father's will. [1]

Charles died before 1790 as his widow Hannah appears on the same Newberry Co, S.C. census page as Robert, James, John and Charles. [2]

Margaret Cobb

F, ID# 5329, (a 1630 - 1680)
Margaret Cobb was born a 1630. She married Henry Bell I a 1649 at Virginia. Margaret Cobb died in 1680 at Virginia.
Margaret Cobb was born about 1630 - 1635 reportedly in Kent County, England. Henry Bell's first marriage was to a Margaret Cobb, but it is unlikely she was Margaret Cobb, the widow of Hugh Stanford.

Some researchers believe Margaret Cobb first married Hugh Stanford of York Co, VA whose estate was listed on 24 Feb 1657 and that Hugh Stanford's widow Margaret then remarried Henry Bell, who was also listed in Hugh's estate, but this hypothesis raises significant issues. The marriage between the widow Margaret and Henry Bell would have taken place after 24 Feb 1657, making the birth of Margaret Bell, Henry's oldest child, about 1658 or 1659. This Margaret Bell was noted as the wife of Nicholas Wren on 21 Sep 1671 where she witnessed a legal document. This would make Margaret only about 13 or 14 years old in that year, if Margaret Stanford was her mother, so it is highly unlikely Henry married the widow of Hugh Stanford.
