Jacques "James" de Chiel / da Shiell was born c 1575 at Lyons, France. He was the son of Guillaume de Chiel II. Jacques "James" de Chiel / da Shiell immigrated in 1595 to Scotland. He married Elizabeth Robesoune on 16 May 1599 at Edinburgh, Scotland. Jacques "James" de Chiel / da Shiell died c 1625.
Jacques "James" de Chiel / da Shiell, a French Huguenot, was born between 1560 and 1575. After the death of his father in 1595 and before the Edit of Nantes in 1598, Jacques fled from Lyons, France to Edinburgh, Scotland to escape persecution. In Scotland he changed his name to James da Shiell.

There is an unproven tradition the de Chiel family was connected with the family of Henry IV in France and may have had connections to the Fairfax family.
