     PVT Nicholas Counts II was born on 12 Jan 1752 at Frederick, Frederick Co, Virginia. He was the son of Nicholas Counts I and Elizabeth "Lisbet" Sharp. PVT Nicholas Counts II married Eve Lydge in 1773 at Orange Co, North Carolina. PVT Nicholas Counts II died on 17 Aug 1838 at Jefferson Co, Tennessee, at age 86.
      Nicholas Counts also used the names Countz and Counce. Some researchers believe he was named Henry Nicholas. At a young age he reportedly moved with his family to Rowan Co, NC and later moved to Orange Co, NC where his first children were born. In 1788 he moved to Hawkins Co (later named Grainger Co), TN and became the progenitor of the Grainger County Counts families.

On 12 July 1794 Nicholas received a 200 acre land grant on Richland Creek in Hawkins Co, NC for his Revolutionary War service. The land included the old Jno King plantation. Nicholas was on the 1805, 1820, and 1836 Grainger Co, TN tax lists.

By 1830 Nicholas and his wife Eve were living alone in Grainger Co, TN where they owned the following slaves: three males and two females under age 10; one male and three females age 10 to 23; and one female 24 to 35. Living adjacent to Nicholas were the following Counts families: David with 5 people living at home; Aaron with 8 people; and Henry with 5 people and two families.

On 4 Mar 1831 Nicholas started receiving a pension based on his service in the North Carolina Line. On 4 Jan 1833 Nicholas applied in Grainger Co court for an additional pension stating he was born 12 Jan 1752 in Virginia; was drafted in Orange Co, NC; marched through North Carolina; and saw action against the British. After that term of service Nicholas was redrafted and served again, falling ill this time and afterwards pulling prisoner guard duty. After he was discharged Nicholas volunteered and served a third time. During his tenure with the military he served under generals Smallwood, Butler, Caswell, Williamson, Rutherford, Gates and Locke. In 1836 Tennessee counties were divided into civil districts, which replaced militia companies for administration. Grainger County was divided into fifteen Districts, and the tenth district was delineated as follows: "to begin on the top of the big Ridge against where Nicholas Counts senr now lives, thence a direct line to the top of Clinch mountain so as to include the said Counts, thence down the top of Clinch mountain to the Road at Atkins’s gap, thence down the fall water branch to Richland Creek, thence a direct line to the top of the Richland Nobs, thence up the top of the Said nobs to the beginning the Election to be held at Col A Fulkerson’s.

     Masten Strong was born c 1774 at prob St Martin's Parish, Hanover Co, Virginia. He was the son of Martin Strong and Anne Stanley. Masten Strong married Nancy East, daughter of Benjamin East, on 26 Dec 1799 at Goochland Co, Virginia. Masten Strong married Rebecca McCormack c 1805 at Buckingham Co, Virginia. Masten Strong died on 31 Jan 1866 at Randolph Co, Alabama.
      Masten Strong was born as early as 1774 based on Goochland Co, VA personal property tax and will records and as late as 1776 according to the Randolph Co, AL census. He was probably born in Hanover Co, VA. He is also noted by the names Mastin, Maston, Marston, and even Martin in official records during his life. In Charles City Co, VA there were people with the last name of Mastin, Marston and Sherwood (Masten had a brother Sherwood) in the 1670s through 1690s and McCormack in the 1740s who may be related.

Masten was married to Nancy East by Rev. Lewis Chaudoin, a Baptist minister, with surety posted by Johnson Hodges. Johnson Hodges also posted surety for Rev. Chaudoin's marriage of Benjamin East to Nancy Pruitt in 1797 in Goochland Co, VA, so Benjamin may be either Nancy East's brother, her first husband or as another source reported be her father. Masten's brother Sherwood was also married by Rev. Chaudoin. In 1797 Masten and his mother Ann leased all the lands and plantations of Joseph Woodson for seven years.

Masten was married about 1805 to Rebecca McCormack by Rev. Macane. Masten moved to Tennessee about the same time as his brothers Thomas and Sherwood Strong, appearing on a Roane Co, TN tax list in 1809 and more or less appearing annually on the tax list from 1814 until 1821. Masten worked as a farmer. He first owned ten and then by 1817 twenty acres on the Clinch River which he sold by 1818. He was apparently a defendant in a suit filed by John Erwin about 1819.

Masten was living in Roane Co, TN when he joined the military to participate in the War of 1812 for seven months. He was mustered in and out in Knoxville, TN. Masten served in Captain James R. Roger's Company, Anderson and Johnson's Regiment, East Tennessee Militia from 1814 until 1815. He also served under Major Belve in Colonel Standeford's Regiment; he served in the 3rd Regiment which may be Standeford's regiment. Masten was apparently in Mobile, AL when the war ended. For his service he received two 80-acre land warrants in the part of Randolph Co, AL that became Cleburne Co, AL in 1866.

Masten appears in the 1830 Jefferson Co, TN census with ten people under age thirty in his household. By his wife Rebecca, Masten had three daughters whose names are unknown and who were older than his son Samuel. One of these daughters possibly married Burl Mullins who was born in North Carolina in 1790 and was living in 1830 in Jefferson Co, TN, as was Masten Strong. Another one of his daughters was possibly the mother of a child being supported by a Mr Monger.

By 1840 Masten was living in Bradley Co, TN with four people under twenty remaining in his household; neither Maston nor his wife could read or write. Masten was living in Jefferson Co, TN in 1850 and that year was indicted and acquitted for retailing liquor without a license in Bradley Co, TN. In 1850 he also made a bounty land application in McMinn Co, TN.

By 1860 Masten was living in Rockdale, Randolph Co, AL (now Cleburne Co) with his wife -- three doors from his oldest son Samuel Strong. Also in his household were Thomas Boman, a miller age 30, his wife Elizabeth Bowman age 27 and their children Jane and John Bowman age 10 and 8 respectively. Elizabeth Bowman would have been born when Rebecca was 43, making it possible that Elizabeth was Rebecca and Mastin's last child born.

Online trees suggest a William McCormack is her father, but the record of this William shows he was serving in the military in the United Kingdom when Rebecca was born in Virginia, and no records tie William to Rebecca or even to America. This William was born about 1766 and was serving with the 18th Dragoon Guards in Aug 1789. Rebecca applied for a War of 1812 pension in 1872 while she had a home in Calhoun Co, AL but was using a Milner (Millerner), Randolph Co, AL address. Researcher Robert Strong could find no records of Rebecca in the Calhoun Co, AL courthouse, and the Randolph Co, AL records of that period were destroyed by fire, although Robert did not check for reconstructed or refiled records. In Calhoun County Rebecca was living with her daughter Nancy Strong Horn.

Rebecca's supposed 1873 death date was originally established by a listing in a family bible which included Rebecca, her children and her grandchildren. Although the original bible was destroyed in a house fire, multiple hand-copies were made prior to then and discussion among descendants indicates her death date was added after the fact and may not be accurate.
