John Melson III1

M, ID# 7397, (c 1700 - )
Father:John Melson II (c 1679 - )
Mother:Mary Smith (c 1675 - )
John Melson III was born c 1700 at Accomack Co, Virginia. He was the son of John Melson II and Mary Smith. John Melson III married Tabitha Onions b 2 Jul 1728 at Accomack Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 28 Nov 1758 at Accomack Co, Virginia.
On 5 Mar 1722/3 John Melson III was taken into the sheriff's custody for fathering the child of Elizabeth Mackwilliams, a single woman. On 5 Nov 1723 John Melson was ordered to pay his brother-in-law John Lewis for attending court as a witness against Elizabeth Mackwilliams.

John married Tabitha Onions, daughter of Thomas Onions and Tabitha Ayres, before 2 July 1728 because on that date a Deed of Gift was given by Thomas Onions and his wife Tabitha "for the love and affection we do bear with John Melson and [their daughter] Tabitha. We give our whole right and title given by Edmund Ayres to Tabitha as may more fully appear by Edmund Ayres' 10 Dec 1718 will." John and Tabitha sold this gifted land about four years later: on 4 Jan 1732 John Melson and his wife Tabitha sold Jacob Dunton for 1200 pounds of tobacco and 61 ½ bushels corn 60 acres, being 1/5 part of 300 acres divised by Edmund Ayres to his five daughters Comfort, Tabitha, Patience, Huldah and Elizabeth and their heirs, and afterwards conveyed by Thomas Onions and Tabitha his wife being the above named Tabitha, daughter of the aforesaid Edmund Ayres to the aforesaid John Melson and Tabitha his wife.

On 28 Nov 1758 in Accomack Co, VA administration of the John Melson III estate was granted to Robert Turnal with William Young as securities. John Melson died intestate and was succeeded by a son Solomon, who in 1774 left a home place of 50 acres to his son Isaac and a balance of 60 acres to his son Daniel. Solomon's acquisition of the 50 acres was not noted, nor how it went from Isaac to Daniel, but in a later survey of adjacent land this 60 acre tract then belonged to Daniel and formed the northeast corner of this tract just south of the 46 acres of land he had obtained from Thomas Bayly from the east end of A99. The 60 acres part of his land inherited was the southwest corner of the tract, and it was that, as 72 acres by survey, which he traded to Thomas Bayly, which resulted in the latter owning the western half of the tract and Daniel and Smith Melson between them the eastern half.

John Lewis II was born a 1658 at Accomack Co, Virginia. He was the son of John Lewis I (of Hunting Creek) and Lucretia Pott. John Lewis II married Elizabeth Rodolphus, daughter of William Rodolphus I and Elizabeth (Unknown), a 7 Jun 1680. John Lewis II died at Hunting Creek, Accomack Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 3 Dec 1701 at Accomack Co, Virginia.
John Lewis junior is shown on the List of Tithables for Accomack County in Capt. Hill's precincts as owing 1 tithe in 1676 and 1677; 2 tithes in 1684 - 1686; on the 1691 list in Mr. Robinson's precincts as owing 3 tithes; and on the 1695 list in Col. Scarburgh's precincts as owing 1 tithe. Given that John junior first began appearing on the tithe list in 1676 it is surmized that is close to the point at which he achieved the age of majority and therefore he was likely born about 1655.

At the Accomack Co, VA Court for 16 Dec 1681 the court appointed John Lewis junior "Surveyor of Ye King's Highway" and he was to clear the roads from Muddy Creek to Deep Creek Mill (unknown full citation, p. 275.)

At the Accomack County Court for 18 Sept 1689 Jno. Lewis, Jr. served on the jury. At the Accomack County Court for 20 March 1694/95 John Lawes petitioned to be discharged from the office of surveyor of the highways; he nominated Thomas Farmburrow to take his place, and the court approved (unknown full citation, p. 152a.)

At the Accomack Co Court for 7 Dec 1698 Overton Mackwilliams petitioned that his mother (deceased) had left him in the care of John Lewis (now also deceased). Overton was to serve till attaining the age of 19 years "at which time he was to be free and at his own disposal." Now 19 years old, Overton asked Lewis' widow Elizabeth for the "small estate to him belonging [which was] to be delivered at ye time of his freedom in the same condition as he received it." [The court] ordered that Elizabeth be summoned to the next court to show why she had not complied (full citation unknown, p. 49a.)

At the Accomack County Court for 3 Dec 1701 Elizabeth Lewis, widow of John Lewis, petitioned that her husband had died intestate; she was granted administration of his estate with Ralph Justice and William Chance as her security. [The court] ordered that Capt. Richard Drumond, Mr. William Willet, Francis Ayres and Richard Greenall inventory and appraise the estate of John Lewis before the next court (full citation unknown, p. 121.)

Since the orphans were now of age, Addison presented an account of the estate belonging to William (two horses, 16 head of cattle) and Elizabeth (2 mares with colts, 15 head of cattle). At the Accomack County Court for 2 Feb 1701/02 William Bunting had sued William Wise for 240 lba tobacco; Wise now appeared and alleged that he had paid the debt by Wm. Lewis. William appeared in the 1704 Rent Rolls for Accomack County with 300 acres. At the Accomack County Court for 6 June 1705 Charles Letherbury presented and acknowledged a deed for land he sold to William Lewis (full citation unknown, p. 46a.)
