Father:William Jeffers (a 1785 - c Nov 1859)
Mother:Mary (Unknown) (a 1784 - )
     Nancy Elizabeth Jeffries was born in 1808 at Campbell Co, Tennessee. She was the daughter of William Jeffers and Mary (Unknown). Nancy Elizabeth Jeffries married Thomas Andrew Lawson, son of PVT Randolph Lawson I and Susanah Cross, in 1822 at Campbell Co, Tennessee. Nancy Elizabeth Jeffries died in 1862 at Albany, Clinton Co, Kentucky.
      In 1840 Nancy Elizabeth Jeffries was living in Campbell Co, TN with her husband Thomas Lawson and family. Living near their family in 1840 were the families of Archibald Jeffers with eight total in the household, Jane Jeffers with four in the household, Robert Jeffers with seven in the household, Stephen Jeffers [possibly her brother] with eight in the household.

By 1850 Nancy and Thomas were living in Scott Co, TN with land valued at 500. Five homes away from Thomas and Nancy were Nancy's parents: William Jeffers age 60, with no land or occupation noted, and his wife Mary age 59, both born in Virginia. Also living with William and Mary were Anna Lawson age 24 likely Thomas and Nancy Lawson's daughter Susannah] and Edmond Lawson age 12; Anna and William, both born in Tennessee, were likely relatives living in the Jeffers household to assist their older relatives.

Also living nearby in 1850 were William Jeffers, a farmer age 34, with his wife Prisciller age 32 and their children Stephen age 8, Samuel age 6, E. P. age 4, Martha An [sic] age 2, and Emely age 1. Living with the Jeffers were G. B. Duncan age 32, his wife Amanda age 21 and their daughter Parasitta age 1.

Unconfirmed accounts of Nancy's life include she was thought to be the daughter of William and Mary Jeffers; she was born early enough that she was never included by name in her parents' household. She is presumed to be their daughter because of where she lived in proximity to the family members during her lifetime.

Nancy and Thomas were living in Clinton Co, KY on Spring Creek when the Civil War broke out. Family stories state Nancy was accidentally shot by chicken thieves while the family was away and she was alone. She died and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Matthews Cemetery, where most of the Lawson family members are buried who died while living there.

Thomas Andrew Lawson1,2

Father:PVT Randolph Lawson I (1753 - Mar 1848)
Mother:Susanah Cross (15 Apr 1765 - 1844)
     Thomas Andrew Lawson was born in Aug 1803 at Puncheon Camp Valley, Hawkins Co, Tennessee. He was the son of PVT Randolph Lawson I and Susanah Cross. Thomas Andrew Lawson married Nancy Elizabeth Jeffries, daughter of William Jeffers and Mary (Unknown), in 1822 at Campbell Co, Tennessee. Thomas Andrew Lawson married Sarah M. (Beck) Groom on 15 May 1869 at Albany, Clinton Co, Kentucky. Thomas Andrew Lawson married Eliza Jane Sanders on 25 Apr 1880 at Overton Co, Tennessee. Thomas Andrew Lawson died on 20 Feb 1891 at Huckabay, Erath Co, Texas, at age 87.
      Thomas Andrew Lawson may have been Thomas Albert Lawson. Thomas and his wife Nancy Jeffries reportedly lived in the New River area outside of Huntsville, TN. In 1830 Thomas age 20 - 29 was living next door to his father Randolph in Campbell Co, TN with his wife Nancy age 20 - 29 and three children less than age 10. Nancy had up to 19 children including reportedly two sets of twins: Sarah Ann, Susannah, Andrew, Elisha, Andrew, Christina, Lewis, Jeremiah, Elzick, Henry, Peggy Ann, Lakie, Amanda, twins Elvira and Elmira, Palmira E. and Bethena. The family moved to Clinton Co, KY and settled on Spring Creek next to what is now Dale Hollow Lake.

Thomas' second wife was Sarah M. Beck with whom he had no known children. Thomas' third wife was Eliza Jane (unknown) Sanders and they had one surviving daughter.

William Jeffers1,2

M, ID# 8610, (a 1785 - c Nov 1859)
Charts:Juanita Bessie Counts * lineage
     William Jeffers was born a 1785. He married Mary (Unknown) a 1804. William Jeffers died c Nov 1859 at Scott Co, Tennessee.
      William Jeffers was a very common name throughout America. Our ancestor William Jeffers senior was born in Virginia between 1771 and 1780 according to his 1850 census record, and there were several William Jeffers born in Virginia during that time period. Tracing his lineage means also tracing the lineages of the other William Jeffers, Jeffries and Jeffreys to untangle records and family relationships. William Jeffers senior was noted once as Jeffries in official records. One researcher believed William senior was the son of John born in 1765 in Caswell Co, NC and his wife Nancy born in 1763 in Georgia, but no proof was provided.

William Jeffers' wife Mary's name was established from the 1850 TN census wherein their daughter Anna is also enumerated.

Both William Jeffers senior's daughter Nancy and his son, our ancestor William B. Jeffers/Jeffries, consistently reported they were born in Tennessee in 1808 and 1812 respectively; this factor alone makes it less likely, although not impossible, William senior is the same William Jeffers found in the 1820 Preston Co, VA (now WV) census. Campbell Co, TN is likely where William and Nancy were born.

Campbell Co, TN was created in 1806 from Anderson and Claiborne counties. In 1813 a petition with 249 names was filed with the House of Representatives of the Tennessee State Legislature to change the location of the Campbell Co seat at Jacksborough to a county seat closer to the Claiborne County line. The petitioners complained, "The said seat having been unjustly settled within four miles of Anderson County, where as the distance to Claiborne County is seventeen miles." The petitioners were mostly, if not all, located in Powell's Valley where the first settlements in Claiborne Co were made along the Clinch River. The petition was significant because it named early settlers in the area, including John Jeffers and William Jeffers, the latter most likely our ancestor William Jeffers senior.

By Mar 1827 our ancestor William senior was living in Campbell Co, TN. On 7 May 1836 William recorded a land deed there wherein he acquired 50 acres which he had entered (inhabited) on 7 Mar 1827 on Buffalo Creek "adjoining his former survey." The 50 acres land began on the north side of the creek above his house, was surveyed 3 Sep 1835 and the deed recorded on 7 May 1836. If "adjoining his former survey" meant William already recorded land next to this 50 acre tract that would account for the additional 3 acres noted in his 1836 taxes.

William senior's children Nancy and William B. married circa 1822 and 1830 respectively into the Randolph Lawson family. Living in Campbell Co, TN in 1830 were several Lawson and Jeffries families; understanding which Lawson and Jeffries families were living near each other in 1830 is key to tracing the older generation and was used to determine the father of William B. Jeffries. In the Jeffries households were these people whose relationships will likely be understood in the future:
--our ancestor William Jeffries and his wife ages 50 - 59 (born 1780-1789) were living with with one male each under age 5 (Benjamin if he is William's son), age 5 - 9, age 10 - 14, age 15 - 19 (William B) and females age 10 - 14 and 15 - 19;
–James Jeffries with one male each age 50 -59 and 20 - 29 and one female each age 50 - 59, 15 - 19, and 10 - 14 in the household. The James Jeffries household was next door to our ancestor Randolph Lawson;
--Robert Jeffries with a male age 60 - 69 and female age 50 – 59;
--Robert Jeffries age 30 - 39 with his wife age 20 - 29 and two small children under age five.

In the Lawson households were predominantly Randolph and his sons:
--Randolph Lawson, our ancestor, (William B. Jeffries' future father-in-law) age 60 - 69; one female each ages 40 - 49, 15 -19 (Clarissa) and 10 - 14; and one male age 15 – 19;
--Robert Lawson age 60 - 69 with a female age 50 – 59;
--Samuel Lawson age 29 (son of Randolph Lawson) with a female the same age.
--Mary Lawson age 40 – 49 with one male each under 5 and age 10 – 14 and one female each 5 – 9 and 10 – 14.
--Thomas Lawson, age 20 – 29, (son of Randolph Lawson), living next door to Randolph with his family (including wife Nancy Jeffries, sister of William B. Jeffries and daughter of William Jeffries);
--Elisha Lawson age 30 – 39 (son of Randolph Lawson) with his wife age 30 – 39 and one male under 5, one age 5 – 9 and two age 10 -14 and one female each age under 5 and 5 – 9;
--Maxwell Lawson (son of Randolph Lawson) and his wife each age 20 – 29 and five [sic] children under age 5.

William B. Jeffries and Clarissa Lawson, both age 18, were likely still living in their fathers' households in 1830. Of the Lawson households, Clarissa is likely the female age 15 – 19 in Randolph Lawson's home; no other Lawson homes in this county have a female of that age. Of the Jeffries households, William B. is likely the male age 15 – 19 in William Jeffries' home; no other Jeffries homes have a male of that age. Therefore it is presumed Clarissa is the daughter of Randolph Lawson and William B. is the son of William Jeffries, living 17 houses away from each other right before their marriage in 1830 or 1831 in that county.

Randolph Lawson reportedly married a Susannah Cross, thus another possibly intermarried family living in Campbell Co, TN in 1830 was that of Absolom Cross; the census taker enumerated the name but did not list anyone in the household, so it may have been an empty house.

The 1838 10th District Counties of Tennessee Tax List included William Jeffers senior with 53 acres valued at 150, 100 acres school lands valued at 150, and taxed on one poll (tax on able-bodied man); his son William Jeffers with no land and taxed on one poll; Robert Jeffries (sic) with 10 acres valued at 30, school land acreage of 12 valued at 30, and one poll; James Jeffers with 75 acres of school land valued at 100 and no poll tax (perhaps because he is elderly); Stephen Jeffers with 30 acres of school land valued at 90 and one poll tax; Archibald Jeffers with one poll; Thomas Lawson (William senior's son-in-law) with 150 acres of school land valued at 275 and one poll tax; and Samuel Lawson with 100 acres valued at 12, 97 acres school lands valued at 78, and one poll tax.

The 1839 10th District Counties of Tennessee Tax List included William Jeffers (senior) with 55 acres valued at 140, 100 acres school lands valued at 140, and taxed on one poll; his son William Jeffers must have already moved to Clinton Co, KY where he was found in 1840. Robert, James, Stephen and Archibald Jeffers remained on the tax list and Campbell Jeffers was now listed. Both Thomas and Samuel Lawson were still listed and Robert Hines Lawson was added.

By 1840 William senior's household expanded to eleven people in Campbell Co, TN and included he and his wife both age 50 - 59, one male each under age 5, age 5 - 9, age 10 - 14, age 15 - 19, two females under age 5, and one female each age 10 - 14, 10 - 29 and 30 - 39. Because William's wife was age 50 - 59 in both the 1830 and 1840 censuses, she was almost age 60 by 1840; the household occupants age 15 and above could be her children, but the 6 younger children cannot be those of William's wife. William senior may have combined households with his widowed daughter or daughter-in-law because there was a female age 30 - 39 in the household who is likely the mother of the younger children. Two of the adults in the household could not read and write and three were employed in farming.

By 1840 William senior's son William B. Jeffries and his father-in-law Randolph Lawson had left Campbell Co, TN and moved to Clinton Co, KY where the following families were present:
–our ancestor William Jeffries (Jeffreys) and his wife Clarissa ages 20 – 29, living 17 houses away from her father Randolph Lawson, with their family consisting of two sons less than 5, a son age 5 – 9, a daughter under 5, a daughter age 5 - 9;
--Elisha Lawson, (son of Randolph), with 7 in the household;
--Randolph Lawson age 80 – 89, his wife Susanah Cross age 60 to 69, and one male age 20 - 29, two females age 5 - 9, and one female age 30 – 39.

By 1850 William senior and his wife Mary, ages 60 and 59 respectively, resided in Scott Co, TN, which was immediately west of Campbell Co, TN, and thus their presence in Scott Co was likely the result of the county boundary change. Also living in their household were Anna Lawson age 24 and Edmond Lawson age 12, likely the grandchildren of William senior. Anna could have been the female age 10 - 14 living in the household in 1840. However, William and Mary's daughter Nancy and her husband Thomas, were also living in the county in 1850; Anna Lawson potentially fits in the gaps among children as one of Thomas and Nancy's children, but it is unclear how Edmond Lawson fits in the family because Thomas and Nancy reported they had another child living at home of Edmond's age.

Unsourced data reported William died in Nov 1859 in Scott Co, TN. A tombstone in the Indian Bluff Cemetary, Lake City, Anderson Co, TN was inscribed William Jeffers, Company I, 9th Tennessee Cavalry, but no dates are visible on its surface.

Two other William Jeffers researched were not our ancestor:

--William Jeffers of Prince William Co, VA: The William Jeffers age 90 (born 1780) in the 1870 Gainesville, Prince William Co, VA census record is not a good candidate to be our ancestor because the apparent daughter-in-law Martha Jeffers (William did not have a known daughter named Martha) in the household was born in 1837 in Virginia while our William's children were born in Tennessee during that period, so it would have been difficult, but not impossible, for this Martha to meet one of William's sons in from Tennessee.

--William Jeffers of Preston Co, VA and Calhoun Co, VA (now WV): Many researchers state our ancestor is the same person as the William Jeffers in Preston Co, VA in 1820, although the two Williams are likely related it is unlikely they are the same man because:
+Both William Jeffers senior's daughter Nancy and his son, our ancestor William B. Jeffers, consistently reported they were born in Tennessee in 1808 and 1812 respectively; this factor alone makes it unlikely, although not impossible, William senior is the same William Jeffers found in the 1820 Preston Co, VA (now WV) census because once families left Virginia for land in Kentucky and Tennessee they generally did not migrate back to Virginia.
+On the other hand both William senior's children Nancy and William B. married into the Randolph Lawson family, and living in Preston Co, VA in 1820 near William Jeffers were Lawson families. In Preston Co, VA, which is in present-day West Virginia, William Jeffers and his wife both age 26 - 44 were living with 3 males and 1 female under age 10 in 1820. His neighbors included Jeffers families (Benjamin with 9 total in the home, Dennis with 6 total, Thomas with 4 total, and another Benjamin with 8 total at home). In the same county were Benjamin Lawson with 5 total, Benjamin Lawson junior with 6, and a crossed-through and rewritten name that could be John Lawson / Lawton / Leston. However, by 1830 Randolph Lawson was already living in Campbell Co, TN as was his married son Thomas who married a Jeffries, and the name Benjamin Lawson is not known as a relative of Randolph Lawson's.
+By 1860 William Jeffers (apparently the one from Preston Co) had moved to Calhoun Co, VA; Calhoun Co (now in WV) was about 80 miles southeast of Preston Co, where William lived in 1820. The actual census record, although transcribed as born in Virginia, states he was born in Allegany Co, MD. Allegany Co, established in 1789, is about 50 miles due east of Preston Co, VA, which was created in 1818. More importantly he apparently married to Sarah and living next to them in 1850 were Benjamin Jeffers age 33, Samuel Jeffers age 23 and Joseph Jeffers age 28 -- all likely his sons -- none of whom were our ancestor's sons.

In the 1860 Arnoldsburg, Calhoun Co, VA (WV) census he is listed as William age 70, a farmer living with Sarah Jeffers age 67 and Isabel Hall age 19, who was a seamstress born in Fayette Co, PA. William had no land but had personal property valued at 30. William and Sarah were both born in Allegany Co, MD.
+Of note were William Jeffer's (of Calhoun Co, VA) probable sons Benjamin, Samuel and Joseph, all born in Preston Co and all able to read and write, living next to William in 1860. Living next door was Benjamin Jeffers, a 33-year-old farmer born in Preston Co, VA where William was living in 1820 and therefore likely William's son. Benjamin's wife Mary, age 29, was born in Lewis Co, VA; their first 3 children -- Sarah C., Marcus S. and Charles C. -- were all born in Gilmer Co, VA and their last 2 children -- Anna S. and Susannah R. -- were born in Calhoun Co, VA. Living on the other side of William senior was Samuel W. Jeffers a 23 year old farmer born in Preston Co, VA who was living with his wife Sarah age 26 born in Kanawha Co, VA (WV) and their newborn daughter born in Calhoun Co; Samuel had real estate valued at 500 and personal property valued at 178. Next to his real estate valuation Samuel record is annotated with "J. Burson? agent for;" this could potentially refer to a mortgage on the property. The next home after Samuel's was unoccupied. Next was the home of Joseph W. Jeffers, a 28-year-old farmer with no land but personal property valued at 110, born in Preston Co, VA who was living with his wife Reama age 23 born in Marion Co, VA (WV) and their one year old daughter Mary. Another two doors away was Aaron W. Criss age 38 a farmer with 1,000 acres land and 101 personal property who was born in Monongalia Co, VA (WV) and living with his family were Ebonezar Criss age 35 and Ugenuis? Criss age 22. Then a few homes away William Jeffers age 34 (born ~1826) a farmer and cabinet maker with personal property valued at 250, who was born in Preston Co, VA, was living with Susannah age 29 born in the same place with Cornelia age 8 and Mary Susan age 1, both born in Gilmer Co, VA. By 1870 this family had a daughter Victoria born in 1863 whereas William B. Jeffries, our ancestor, had a daughter Victoria born 1854. He is likely the William Jeffreys who died in 1892 in Calhoun Co, WV. The conclusion from these Calhoun Co records was this is not our ancestor William senior because he did not have sons Benjamin, Samuel or Joseph.
