COL William Woods I1,2,3

M, ID# 931, (c 2 Nov 1705 - c 12 Apr 1782)
Father:Michael Woods (c 1683 - 1762)
Mother:Mary Campbell (1682 - 1742)
COL William Woods I was born c 2 Nov 1705 at Dunshaughlin Castle, Co Meath, Leinster, Irish Republic. He was the son of Michael Woods and Mary Campbell. COL William Woods I married Susannah Wallace, daughter of Captain Samuel Wallace and Elizabeth Woods, a 1740 at Augusta Co, Virginia.1 COL William Woods I died c 12 Apr 1782 at Fincastle (Greenbrier), West Virginia. He was buried at Fincastle (Greenbrier), West Virginia.
William Woods, the eldest son of Michael and Mary Woods, acquired a large estate in Albemarle and adjacent counties in Virginia and took an active part in the Colonial Wars, holding the rank of Colonel. At one time, he conveyed 60 Negroes and 7,200 acres of land to his cousin Capt McDowell.

William married his first cousin Susannah Wallace. Considerable difference of opinion exists regarding when he and his wife Susannah Wallace were born -- with most researchers placing their births in the very early 1700s -- and where and when they married. This researcher established an approximate birth date for Susannah based on when she would have stopped having children; she could not have been born in 1708 and still have been having children in 1761.

Sarah Woods1,2

F, ID# 932, (a 1722 - )
Father:Samuel Woods I (a 1681 - )
Mother:Elizabeth Campbell (a 1685 - )
Sarah Woods was born a 1722. She was the daughter of Samuel Woods I and Elizabeth Campbell. Sarah Woods married Joseph Lapsley II c 1741.
Sarah Woods is distinguished from her first cousin of the same name because she was married by 1741 and living adjacent to her siblings, and her first cousin Sarah Woods the daughter of Michael Woods was still unmarried in 1761 when Michael wrote his will.

Because Albemarle Co, VA was formed in 1744 and Augusta Co, VA was not formed until 1745, Sarah's marriage had to be recorded in Orange Co, VA.

Father:Michael Woods (c 1683 - 1762)
Mother:Mary Campbell (1682 - 1742)

According to family tradition, when Michael Woods' clan was moving to Virginia they crossed Pennsylvania to the frontier and stopped at the house of Rev James Anderson. Rev Anderson had a beautiful daughter age 12 named Susannah. Michael Woods' son John was four years her senior and fell deeply in love with her. John vowed to return and win her as his wife after he became a man and in a few years he returned and they were married. [Note there is another family not in our line which claims Susannah married a Robert Taylor and states their information is well researched.]

Richard Woods I (of Albemarle Co)1,2,3

M, ID# 937, (b 1714 - 1801)
Father:Michael Woods (c 1683 - 1762)
Mother:Mary Campbell (1682 - 1742)
Richard Woods I (of Albemarle Co) was born b 1714. He was the son of Michael Woods and Mary Campbell. Richard Woods I (of Albemarle Co) married Margaret (Unknown) a 1739. Richard Woods I (of Albemarle Co) married Elizabeth Woods, daughter of Richard Woods (Sheriff of Augusta Co), a 1757. Richard Woods I (of Albemarle Co) died in 1801.
Whether this particular Richard Woods was the son of Michael and/or if he is the Richard who married Elizabeth Woods is subject to speculation. This particular Richard may not be the Richard who married Margaret and Elizabeth Ann.

Virginia records regarding a Richard Woods include:

Aug 1750 County Court: Lawsuit of Smith vs. several members of Woods family related to old debts in Pennsylvania from 1733-38, accounts of credits: 26 Jun 1735, credit by 36 [schillings] discounted with his son Richard by Michael Woods.

15 Mar 1757, Augusta Co Court: Richard Woods, gentleman and Elizabeth of Augusta to son-in-law, Richard Wood (notes as Woods in related records) for 25 pounds, 195 Acres in Forks of James where Richard, grantor, now liveth; corner in Borden's Patent Line by James Davis; corner Peter Wallace; corner Richard Wood."

18 Nov 1760, Augusta Co Court: Richard Woods of Albemarle, merchant, to Peter Wallace in Augusta, farmer, for 60 pounds, 195 Acres (same acreage as the parcel in 1757) in Forks of James; corner in Borden's Patent Line by James Davies' field; corner Peter Wallace's other land; corner Richard Woods, gentleman. Deed delivered by Capt. Samuel Lapsley.

It is possible Michael Woods who married Mary Campbell had a son named Richard to whom he had previously given his inheritance and thus did not mention him in his will. Certainly wills can be found in which statements to the effect "my son John has previously been given his share." Possibly such a predeath bequethal could have been made for Richard, but then it would likely be mentioned as such in the will. In which case Richard would be mentioned in the will If such an entry was not made in the will then I would expect that either there would be other documentation that would establish the identity of such a son, perhaps in other portions of the estate record, or in some other format, or there was no such son. Absent good hard original source documentation, if someone is not mentioned at all in a will, more likely they were not in fact a child of the deceased.

There were three Richard Woods: this Richard Woods of Albemarle, merchant and planter whose wife was Elizabeth Woods and whose father-in-law was the second Richard Woods who lived in Augusta and Botetourt counties, and a third Richard Woods of Albemarle Co.

Also according to Chalkley, Richard Woods, merchant planter of Albemarle Co, VA -- where Michael Woods lived as per his will proved in that county -- married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Woods, the sheriff of Augusta Co, VA. Richard Woods became sheriff in the 1740s and did not marry his own daughter, so this shows two of the Richard Woods in two different nearby counties.
