      In the 1900 census Elizabeth Malinda Morrison stated she was born in May 1828. Although this statement eliminates the birth date conflict Elizabeth had with her brother George on the data provided on find-a-grave, it established a conflict with the birth dates of her brothers James and Andrew, so their dates were also realigned.

Jane Morrison1

F, ID# 10359, (c 1811 - 1859)
Father:Rev William Morrison I (15 Apr 1778 - 26 May 1854)
Mother:Elizabeth Snider (1789 - 21 Jan 1879)
     Jane Morrison was born c 1811 at Tennessee. She was the daughter of Rev William Morrison I and Elizabeth Snider. Jane Morrison married James Abels c 1827. Jane Morrison married Unknown Leather c 1851. Jane Morrison died in 1859 at Cherokee Co, Alabama.
      Jane Morrison married James Able who grew up in Tennessee and after his marriage began farming in that state. He subsequently disposed of his property there and moved to Calhoun Co, AL where he purchased land and farmed until his death. ... He died on the old homestead at the age of sixty years and his widow Jane afterward kept their children together until they were grown and able to care for themselves.

James and Jane Able reportedly had 15 children, however when James was dead there were only 7 children at home in 1850. Jane was noted on the 1850 Cherokee Co, AL census, transcribed as "John" Abels, with her children:
--William, of Alabama age 22 in 1850
--Joseph, age 20 in 1850 who died in Arkansas as the result of a wound sustained in the army;
--John, age 19 in 1850 who died in Hunt Co, TX;
--James M., age 13 in 1850 married Elmina Hodges and moved to Cooke Co, TX;
--Francis, age 12 in 1850 who died in Alabama;
--Elizabeth age 11 in 1850
--Amanda age 10 in 1850
All her sons reportedly served in the Confederate Army.

William was apparently Jane's first born child when she was age 17, and Amanda was her last child listed on the census in 1850, so the children listed below are not Jane's because she was age 39 in 1850, and had not yet married Mr. Leather, by whom she had one child, Caledonia. Thus, Mrs. Nancy Burson; Moses, who was killed; Thomas, who laid down his life for the South while serving in the Confederate Army; Doc, of the Indian Territory; Mrs. Sarah Williamson; Mrs. Caroline Kinsey; Mrs. Melvina Cristofer; and Mrs. Susan Brannemann are not Jane's children although they are listed on find-a-grave as being hers.

Furthermore, our Jane Morrison, who died in 1859, was not the Jane Abels who married Peter Leathers, 40 years her senior. That Jane, born circa 1815 in Tennessee, had Abels children born generally a decade later than our Jane's children and named Thomas, Andrew, Caroline, Rachel and Susan and a daughter Emily Leathers, born 1849, on the 1860 Calhoun Co, AL census; none of these children's names match our Jane's children's names.

James ? Morrison1,2

M, ID# 10371, (6 Dec 1739 - 2 Aug 1829)
Father:Andrew? Morrison (1718 - 6 Feb 1770)
Charts:Oma Lavinia Strong lineage
     James ? Morrison was born on 6 Dec 1739 at Rowan Co, North Carolina. He was the son of Andrew? Morrison. James ? Morrison married Mary Morrison, daughter of James Morrison II and Mary McMahan, a 1777. James ? Morrison died on 2 Aug 1829 at Iredell Co, North Carolina, at age 89.
      James Morrison and Mary Morrison are presumed to be the parents of William Morrison because they all resided in Iredell Co, NC. However, records show other William Morrison(s) resided in Mecklenburg Co, NC and adjacent Iredell Co in 1780, right before our William was born, and in 1814, in Iredell Co which was when our William was already living in Tennessee. So there is a possibility our William could be the son of Civil War soldier William Morrison residing in Mecklenburg Co in 1780. Furthermore, because James is 17 years older than his reported wife Mary, this researcher was concerned some of this data may be incorrect, although she could be a second wife. If James and his wife Mary and and James' parents Andrew Morrison and Mary McKnight Purviance are ever proved to be correct there is considerable more data available online.

Rowan, Iredell and Mecklenburg Co are contiguous in NC. In 1780 a James Morrision resided in Capt Purvianel's District in Rowan Co, NC; note our James was reported to have married, among others, a Purviance. In 1790 James Morrison resided in Iredell Co, NC with 4 males under age 16 and 2 females at home; the sexes and ages mirror our James' family. In 1800 a James Morrison resided in Salisbury, Mecklenburg Co, adjacent to Iredell Co; however in 1800 only James, his wife and daughter appear on the census whereas, unless he is deceased, his 12 year old son should be at home.

By 1810 a "Jas" Morrison on the Mecklenburg Co, NC census was shown with a young family totaling 10, so unless multiple generations were living together this was not likely our James.

A Col James Morrison, esquire, on the 1820 and 1830 Iredell Co, NC census -- both years with a young family totally 9 and then 7 at home, so he may possibly be our James' namesake son; by 1829 our James was deceased. Additionally a James Morrison on the 1810 Iredell Co, NC census had a family of 9, but this James is age 26 to 44 whereas our James was much older.

It is important to also note there were other James Morrisons simultaneously in Virginia and Tennessee. For example a James Morrison son of William and Elizabeth Morrison; born 30 Nov 1769, Rowan Co, NC; married Melissa Ervin; had children born 1800-1830; and died 3 Jul 1832 in Iredell Co, NC is likely one of the men noted in the census records.

The unsourced data from online trees for the reported parents of James Morrison -- namely Andrew Morrison and Mary McKnight Purviance -- is both plentiful and likely incorrect:

--James was not listed in Andrew Morrison's 1770 will, although James did not reportedly die until 1829, which is usually unheard of for a favorable living son. A North Carolina will abstract for an Andrew Morrison specifically states "1770 Morison, Andrew: Mary, Sarah, John, Martha, David, Andrew, William." Assuming the therein listed Mary is his wife who was still alive and not a namesake daughter, then Sarah, John, Martha, David, Andrew and William are presumed to be his children, pending seeing the actual will. Because his reported son our ancestor James was still alive in 1770, this Andrew Morrison is not likely the father of James born in 1739 unless there was a first unknown wife.

--On the other hand, Andrew Morrison's find-a-grave data, none of which is proven data, states Andrew had nine children and in addition to the above listed children also had Margaret and James.

--Mary McKnight Purviance was only 5 years old when our reported ancestor James Morrison was born in 1739 so she cannot be his mother, although she could be his step-mother.

--Even the concept of Andrew Morrison marrying Mary McKnight Purviance is doubtful because Mary was 16 years his junior, with the average age between spouses being within 5 years, although she could have been a younger second wife.

--Andrew could have married a different, older Mary. Other online family trees also show Andrew married Mary Newlin born 1717 and died 17 Dec 1788.

--Note also that innumerable different children were listed for Andrew in various ancestry.com trees, so there were likely a number of Andrew Morrisons in North Carolina simultaneously.

Thus based on the above inconsistencies, this researcher has not accepted Andrew Morrison as being the father of James or captured the data for the ancestors of Andrew Morrison and Mary McKnight Purviance, because at this time Andrew Morrison and Mary McKnight Purviance being the parents of our James is too suspect to be considered good clues for our family line.
