Nancy E. Duke1,2

F, ID# 10741, (c 1819 - 18 Feb 1899)
Father:Hardeman Duke (c 1777 - )
Mother:Sally Jordan (1785 - 1828)
Nancy E. Duke was born c 1819 at Alabama. She was the daughter of Hardeman Duke and Sally Jordan. Nancy E. Duke married Moses G. H. Calk, son of Elijah Calk and (1st wife of Elijah Caulk) (Unknown), on 13 Aug 1839 at Clarke Co, Alabama. Nancy E. Duke died on 18 Feb 1899 at Sibley, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana.
According to the 1850 and 1870 censuses, Nancy was born 1819 or 1820 and the 1850 census specifies in Alabama so, she could not have been a child of Elias Dukes, who was still living in South Carolina, but was Hardeman Duke's child.

In 1860 Nancy E. Duke was enumerated as Nancy E. Cork age 41 born about 1819 on the 1860 Prairie Bluff, Wilcox Co, AL census with her children. She had $600 in real estate and $402 in personal property.

By 1870 Nancy was living with her family in Lower Peach Tree, Wilcox Co, AL, a cotton shipping port on the northeast border of Clarke Co on the Alabama River about 15 miles away from Grove Hill in Clarke Co. She was enumerated as Nancy E. Culk age 50 with Emma age 26, Ervin age 21, Melissa age 22, Caroline age 20, Sarah age 18 and Oliver age 15. This researcher is confident this is the correct Calk family because Nancy's birth date and the names of two of her children exactly match Nancy's previous census. However, the census taker in 1870 had considerable problems recording the family data correctly or was given incorrect data by the reporter, possibly one of the youngest children.

First, the census taker in 1870 erroneously used the data from the previously interviewed family and recorded Nancy's family members were all born in Virginia; this is refuted by Nancy's previous and her daughter Caroline's subsequent census records. For Nancy's children Melissa and Caroline the birth years are slightly off. The previous census did not record the names Emma or Ervin in her household; although Emma can likely be aligned with the name Emenith, which son the name Ervin aligns with is unknown because of the misalignment of birth dates.

In 1870 living 5 doors away in Wilcox Co, AL was W. Parks D. Duke, a farmer age 59 with $8000 in real estate and $2000 in personal property, who was born in AL. Living with him were Mary Duke age 48, William Duke age 35, Lucy Ann Duke age 29, W. Parks W. D. Duke, and Thomas Washington [not Duke] age 16 and Lucy Duke age 4, all born in South Carolina if correctly written down by the census taker. Living nearby by is her widowed sister Emily Jane Thomas with her family; a James Duke, a white man age 22 who is a farm laborer; and the black families of Minerva Duke age 24, George Duke age 32, Hannah Duke age 35; this was after the civil war and the black families likely adopted the Duke family name if they worked for them previously.

In 1880 Nancy was enumerated as Nancy Cork, a widow age 58 residing in Union Parish, LA with her son Henry, her two daughters Emma and Melissa and Henry's niece, likely her grandchild, Edmonia Hester. Nancy's father was listed as born in Mississippi and her mother in Alabama, as were all family members except for the niece indicating this data is likely incorrect.

Moses G. H. Calk1,2,3

M, ID# 10742, (15 Sep 1812 - 1857)
Father:Elijah Calk (c 1771 - b 31 Dec 1852)
Mother:(1st wife of Elijah Caulk) (Unknown) (a 1795 - 1820)
Moses G. H. Calk was born on 15 Sep 1812 at Wayne Co, Georgia. He was the son of Elijah Calk and (1st wife of Elijah Caulk) (Unknown). Moses G. H. Calk married Nancy E. Duke, daughter of Hardeman Duke and Sally Jordan, on 13 Aug 1839 at Clarke Co, Alabama. Moses G. H. Calk died in 1857.
The Moses Calk's family name was transcribed as Calk and as Calb for his marriage documents.

Under the act to settle more public lands, Moses G. H. Calk purchased with cash 160 acres on 15 Mar 1837 in Choctaw Co, AL in the southeast border of the state. He purchased an additional 40 acres in Choctaw Co on 2 Nov 1837 for cash. In 1837 Moses was residing in Sumpter Co, north of Choctaw Co, according to his purchase documents.

In fall of 1839 Moses married in Clarke Co and moved there to live with his wife Nancy Duke. In 1850 Moses age 38 and Nancy age 31 were farming in Clarke Co three doors from the family of W. P. Duke, likely a relative of Nancy's, with $1100 in real estate. W. P. Duke age 28 was living with William Duke 15, David Duke 13, Lucy Duke 11, Olive Duke 8, Mary Duke 3, and Charles Duke 23, all born in Alabama; the family configuration and the sizable real estate holdings indicate W. P. is caring for relatives. Also living in the household are Olive Heade age 60 and Hannah Heade age 25, both born in Georgia.

Although Moses did not appear in the 1860 or 1870 Wilcox Co, AL census with Nancy and thus was presumed by this reseacher to be dead, another researcher posted Moses died in 1875 in Sibley, Lincoln Parish Co, LA; no death record was found there for Moses.

Emily Jane Duke1

F, ID# 10743, (c 1826 - a 1870)
Father:Hardeman Duke (c 1777 - )
Mother:Sally Jordan (1785 - 1828)
Emily Jane Duke was born c 1826 at Wilcox Co, Alabama. She was the daughter of Hardeman Duke and Sally Jordan. Emily Jane Duke married PVT William James Thomas, son of Ila Thomas and Mary Edwards, on 26 Mar 1845 at Clarke Co, Alabama. Emily Jane Duke died a 1870 at Clarke Co, Alabama.
According to the 1860 Clarke Co, AL census Emily Jane Duke was born in Wilcox Co, AL, the county neighboring to the counties where Elias and Hardeman Duke resided in 1830; other data to support this has not yet been found. She could have been either the daughter of Elias or Hardeman based on her 1823 birth. Emily Jane's descendant Harold Smith of Clarke Co, AL inherited considerable Dukes family information and pictures, and it was his family's conclusion Emily Jane was Hardeman's daughter. Thus at this time Emily Jane has tentatively been identified with Hardeman's family.

A letter written from Camp Watts [near Notasulga], Macon Co, AL on 16 Nov 1863 to Emily Jane from her husband William mentioned it grieved him to hear of "ilaes death." "Ilaes" could refer to one of three people. The reference may have been to William's father Illa Thomas; however in that case William would more likely have said "my father's death" versus "ilaes death," and William's father was reportedly already deceased. "Ilaes death" may have referred to the death of Elias Dukes, in which case this researcher would infer Emily Jane was the daughter of Elias Duke, which is unlikely given the data possessed by Emily Jane's descendants. Finally, "ilaes death" may have referred to the death of Ila, the son of John H. Dukes, son of Elias and nephew of Emily Jane, if that boy, who was about age 12 in 1860, died at that time. No record has been found for Illa Thomas after his 1841 northern Alabama land acquisition, for Elias Dukes after the 1830 census, nor for Ila Duke after 1850, so they may have been dead before the war and "ilaes death" may refer to someone else.

By 1870 Emily and her presumed sister Nancy had moved from Clarke Co to Lower Peach Tree, Wilcox Co, near James Duke, age 22. Between 1850 to 1870 Emily reported her age as 23, 30, and 47 on the respective censuses, leaving her birth date varying between 1823 to 1830.

PVT William James Thomas1

M, ID# 10744, (c 1822 - b 1870)
Father:Ila Thomas (1794 - 1842)
Mother:Mary Edwards (1801 - 1871)
PVT William James Thomas was born c 1822 at Greene Co, Alabama. He was the son of Ila Thomas and Mary Edwards. PVT William James Thomas married Emily Jane Duke, daughter of Hardeman Duke and Sally Jordan, on 26 Mar 1845 at Clarke Co, Alabama. PVT William James Thomas died b 1870.
William Thomas was enumerated as Wm Thomas, age 28 a farmer, and his wife Emily on the 1850 Grove Hill, Clarke Co, AL federal census living only with his two daughters Mary and Sarah. He was listed in the 1850 state census with the same family configuration. Thomas was listed with 16 acres land valued at $100 and $95 farming implements; livestock valued at $215: 1 horse, 9 dairy cows, 5 other cattle, 2 oxen, 36 pigs; and 30 bushels of wheat and 50 bushels of corn. Also in the 1850 Clarke Co census is a William Thomas age 19 living with his mother Martha age 45.

Evidently in 1850 there was only one William Thomas married and living on his own with his family in the county. Apparently during the 1850 census their daughter Lavinia age 2 was living with someone else when their daughter Sarah was born that year. By 1860 Thomas was working as a farm laborer.

William enlisted at age 32 and served in Company D, the "Clarke County Invincibles," 38th Regiment, Alabama Volunteers. He was listed on the 12 Jun 1862 muster roll and he wrote his wife from the front in 1864.

Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes1,2,3,4

M, ID# 10745, (24 Jun 1809 - 16 Sep 1892)
Father:Elias Duke (c 1785 - b 1840)
Mother:Emily "Milly" Francis Elkins (c 1786 - a 1860)
Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes was born on 24 Jun 1809 at Orangeburg Co, South Carolina. He was the son of Elias Duke and Emily "Milly" Francis Elkins. Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes and Mary Webb obtained a marriage license on 8 Mar 1832 at Clarke Co, Alabama. Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes married Cynthia Mastin on 27 Dec 1837 at Montgomery Co, Alabama. Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes married Martha Ann Luker, daughter of Martin Luker and Elizabeth (Unknown), on 31 Jul 1843 at Macon Co, Alabama. Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes married Laura Jane Eslinger on 25 Dec 1879 at Mount Vernon, Franklin Co, Texas. Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes died on 16 Sep 1892 at Titus Co, Texas, at age 83. He was buried at Glade Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Texas.
Abraham "Abram" J. Dukes Abram reported he was born in both Georgia and South Carolina on different censuses; he reported a South Carolina birth while later married to Laura Jane Burleson.

Abram applied for a marriage bond to marry Mary Webb in 1832, but the minister forgot to certify the marriage. Although there is no proof Abram married Mary Webb, the five-year gap between 1832 and his next marriage, which would be a long time for a marriageable young man, caused this researcher to conclude he likely married Mary. Furthermore, if he is the Dukes noted in Macon Co, AL in 1840, he had three children age 5 - 9 who were too old to have been from his 1837 marriage to Cynthia Mastin.

When Abram married Cynthia Mastin in Montgomery Co, AL, he was adjacent to Macon Co where he was next enumerated. According to researcher Tony Cox, Abram likely already moved to Macon Co, AL by the time of the 1840 census and is likely the apparently widowed [no first name] Dukes shown with 2 males and 1 female between age 5 and 9 [most likely the children of Mary Webb], himself age 30-39, and perhaps the unknown 15-19 and 20-29 year old males were hired help. Thirteen slaves were also enumerated who were not with the Dukes by 1850.

Abram J. Dukes applied in Tallapoosa Co, AL and received 319.6 acres in Macon Co, AL under the general allotment of Indian lands, apparently on 9 Dec 1842.

Abram next married the widow Martha Ann Luker Smith in 1843, who by 1840 had had 3 daughters under age 5. Of note, one of Martha Ann's sisters also married into the same Smith family, so it was apparently a close-knit group.

In 1850 A. J. Dukes was shown with 1 male under 21 [son John], 1 male over 21 [Abraham himself], 5 females under 21 Martha's daughters with Abram: Adelaide age 5 and Elizabeth age 2; possibly Abram's 17-21-year-old daughter with Mary Webb; or more likely Martha's three daughters born 1839-1840 with her previous husband.

Martha's younger sister Lurana age 22 and her husband Ephraim Henry were in the 1850 census in DeSoto Co, LA on the Louisana - Texas border and by 1860 Abram had moved his family to Louisiana. Abram was enumerated as A. J. Dukes, age 50 and born circa 1810 in GA, living in Alexandria, Rapides Co, LA with his wife Martha A. age 40 and their family in 1860. Abram was noted as an engineer. The transcription made it appear other families were living in the same household but the original records showed they were not. Abram was the only person living in the area who is not a very rich plantation owner usually with an overseer; in fact Abram owned no land at all causing this researcher to wonder what brought him to Louisiana. Perhaps his engineering skills were used for repairing farm equipment.

By 1860 Martha Ann's sister Barthena and her husband Kendrick Smith were already living in Mount Vernon, Titus Co, TX with their family and Abram and his family soon joined them. Abram bought a 100 acre farm for $800, 14 miles west of Mount Pleasant, Titus, TX on 3 Oct 1863 from Spencer W. and Nancy Sneed. The deed was filed for record 16 Nov 1863, and recorded in Book M, pages 336 and 337, 11 Dec 1863, Mt. Pleasant, Titus, TX.

By 1870 Abram was listed as Abraham J. Dukes age 61 born circa 1809 in SC and was living in Mount Pleasant, Titus Co, TX with his wife Martha A, age 42 and their children; although Martha did not age, the children did, so this is clearly the correct family. Abram and his son John were farming and Abram is shown with $800 real estate and $140 personal property. Abram is noted as born in South Carolina and his wife Martha in GA.

In 1880 Abram was noted as Abram J. Dukes age 70 born about 1810 in South Caroina living in Franklin Co, TX with his new wife Laura Jane. Abram was farming and reported his parents were born in South Carolina, which would be consistent with him being a son of Elias.

Abraham is buried in the Glade Springs Baptist Church Cemetery located behind the Glade Springs Baptist Church approximately 1.5 miles east of TS Hwy 37, on TS Hwy 21 south of Mt. Vernon, TX. His last wife, Laura Jane is buried on his left when facing the marker. Laura Jane brought a young son into this marriage.

DNA comparison between a descendant of Abraham and descendants of Darrington, Julia and Osmon Dukes showed 99% - 100% certainty of Identical By Descent, thus proving Abraham was their sibling.

Thomas Carter I was born on 27 Dec 1805 at Georgia. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Duke, daughter of Hardeman Duke and Sally Jordan, on 10 Mar 1836 at Clarke Co, Alabama. Thomas Carter I died on 4 Jun 1879 at Grove Hill, Clarke Co, Alabama, at age 73.
In 1850 Thomas was enumerated as Thos Carter age 44 living with his wife Betsy age 32 and their children in Clarke Co, AL. Although the Carter family was noted as black, this census taker marked every person in the census with ditto marks, including the probate judge who was the first person listed on page one and the Irish families, except for the black and mulatto people who were marked with B and M. Thus because the Carter family was on the same page as a black family it appeared as though the Carters were black. The Carter family can be seen in the 1870 census enumerated as white. Also living in the household in 1850 was George Carter age 25 a farm worker born in Alabama and Thomas Dukes age 35 with no profession and born in Alabama; Thomas Dukes may be Elizabeth's brother.

On 1 Jul 1852 and again on 1 Sep 1860 Thomas bought 40 acres of public land in Clarke Co for cash each time. By 1860 Thomas' family had grown considerably. He was farming and owned $1,500 in real estate and $3,750 in personal property.

By 1870 Thomas was a hotel keeper in Grove Hill, Clarke Co, AL and had $3000 in real estate and $1,500 in real property. Thomas' wife Elizabeth was not living there and his oldest daughters were apparently managing the hotel. There were four Carter and Childers children which were likely Thomas' grandchildren and several servants living there. The hotel inhabitants included a brick mason, the county treasurer, the clerk of court, a lawyer, and a doctor. Living 2 doors away is Elizabeth's sister Eliza Jane with her husband Jack Wilson.
