Pvt. and Rev. James Allen Glenn1

M, ID# 11164, (5 Mar 1826 - 20 Mar 1894)
Father:James Glenn II (11 Jan 1804 - 5 Jul 1863)
Mother:Olive "Ollie" Richards (16 Jun 1805 - 18 Feb 1894)
Pvt. and Rev. James Allen Glenn was born on 5 Mar 1826 at Newberry Co, South Carolina. He was the son of James Glenn II and Olive "Ollie" Richards. Pvt. and Rev. James Allen Glenn married Martha Charlotte Bradford on 14 Oct 1847. Pvt. and Rev. James Allen Glenn married Unknown Robinson c 1884. Pvt. and Rev. James Allen Glenn died on 20 Mar 1894 at Mineral Wells, Texas, at age 68.
James Allen Glenn was living next door to his parents in household 408 in 1860 in Cherokee Co, AL with children James O. age 10; John B. age 8; Olive age 6; Thomas age 4 and Mary C. age 11 months. James Allen's mother's obituary specifically mentioned her son J. A. Glenn. James is believed to be the James A. Glenn of Benton (later renamed Calhoun) Co, AL who purchased 40 acres in Etowah Co, AL on 1 Aug 1853. James began preaching in 1859.

James served 3 years in the Confederate Army. Glenn clan first cousins seving together as privates in Company A, 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment included brothers James Allen Glenn, George Washington Glenn and Peter B. Glenn; John Thomas Glenn and his brother William Marion Glenn; and James E. Tinsley. Brothers John Thomas Glenn and William M. Glenn and their cousin James Allen Glenn were captured on 16 May 1864 at Resaca, GA, sent to Louisville, KY on 20 May 1864, and transferred to Camp Douglass on 23 Aug 1864.

In the 1866 Cherokee Co, AL state census James and his wife were enumerated with their extensive family: sons Peter, Marion, Thomas, John and James and daughters Molly and Amanda.

In 1866 James and his family moved to Collin Co, TX along with other family members where he continued working as a preacher. In 1870 John Yates, age 58 a school teacher, was living with the Glenns. In 1875 he moved to Palo Pinto Co, TX.

On 18 Feb 1894 James wrote his final letter from Mineral Wells, TX to one of his sons. The letter mentions his son's mother is not able to do anything, so because his children's mother died from pneumonia long before in 1883, this letter must be to one of his youngest sons and James is referring to his second wife as if she were that son's mother. James noted Grandma, meaning Olive Glenn, died last night.

James' obituary notes he had 7 sons and 3 daughter, all of whom lived to adulthood.

Jane McCullough1,2

Jane McCullough was born on 11 Sep 1811 at Ireland. She married William "Billy" Marion Glenn I, son of James Glenn I and Margaret Plunkett, on 25 Dec 1827 at Abbeville Co, South Carolina. Jane McCullough died in Apr 1879 at Etowah Co, Alabama, at age 67.
There is confusion about Jane McCullough's birth date and place, which would typically indicate there were multiple Jane Glenns. At least two Jane Glenns were born in 1811 whose death records reported in one case the woman was born in Knox Co, TN and was married to William Marion Glenn and in the other case stated the woman and her parents were born in South Carolina. Jane could not have been born in Ireland if as one researcher reported her father immigrated to America before she was born and he then immigrated via Virginia to Tennessee where he married.

Our Jane consistently reported in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses that she was born in Ireland. Her birth date was calculated as about 1815, 1812 and 1812 for those censuses. By 1880 Jane was no longer in the household and thus presumed deceased. Jane was also noted with the name McColough, McCoulough, McColough and McCoulough.
