Ezekiel Beam ? (of Newberry)1

M, ID# 11704, (b 1747 - )
Charts:Amanda Ola Weathers lineage
Ezekiel Beam ? (of Newberry) was born b 1747.
Ezekiel Beam, born before 1747, was possibly the father of Jacob Beam and the grandfather of our ancestor Ezekiel born in 1796. The presumption is based on circumstantial evidence that these three men are the only Beams found in records in 2020 who were not part of the Albert Beam family of Beaver Dam Creek, SC. All SC Archives records were examined for Beam/Bean families to try to establish family relationships for the elder Ezekiel born before 1747, but other than records related to Ezekiel's 1768 land acquistion on Second Creek and a Jacob Beam witnessing an 1823 will, the many other Beam records were connected to the line of the well-to-do Albert Beam who arrived in the area after the elder Ezekiel.

Our Ezekiel Beam (~1796 -1878) was tentatively tied to the elder Ezekiel (b bef 1747) and Jacob because our ancestor was born in South Carolina about 1796 but was illiterate, also was not from the Albert Beam line, and married into the Glenn family which lived in the same district as the elder Ezekiel. However, it is also conceivable our Ezekiel was the son, rather than grandson, of the elder Ezekiel.

Ezekiel was noted with the names Ezekill, Ezekel, Beem, Beame and Beames in land records and those names are used herein verbatim. Based on a 3 May 1768 warrant, Ezekiel Beem received a plat on 12 May 1768 for 100 acres on a branch of Mill Creek in Craven Co, SC adjacent to the land of Alexander Davidson and vacant land. Beam's land was bisected to the north by a creek, likely a branch of Mill Creek, and had Bear Springs noted on the north side of the land. Of note, the plat apparently originally said Elizabeth Beem and Elizabeth was crossed out and changed to Ezekiel; thus Elizabeth could potentially be his wife. The plat has an annotation on the bottom that is "(illegible 2 letters): Co 6 Aug 1771." To acquire land, Ezekiel would have to have been born in 1747 or earlier.

Although there is a Mill Creek less than 1.8 miles from the land of John Glenn into whose family Ezekiel's presumed grandson (or son) married, because subsequent records consistently describe Ezekiel's land as being on Second Creek and Broad River, Ezekiel's land was likely across the district near the Broad River. An 1820 Newberry District survey map showed Ruffs Ferry at the Broad River near Second Creek. Traveling on 1820 roads between Higgins Ferry near Rocky Branch where John Glenn owned land and his son and granddaughter subsequently lived through the main town of Newberry to Ruff's Ferry near where the Beam family owned land and lived was about twelve miles.

On 28 Nov 1771 Ezekiel Beem received his land grant for 100 acres in Craven Co, and on 20 Feb 1772 he received his memorial for 100 acres on Mill Creek in Craven Co. Craven Co was actually abolished in 1768 but his documents were thus noted. Craven Co and the adjacent Berkeley Co were approximate geographical areas with fluid, unsurveyed boundaries. On 23 Jul 1773 Alexander Johnson (sic) received his memorial for acquiring 100 acres next to Ezekiel Beam and Alexander Davidson, which by then because of shifting boundaries, was noted as being on Second Creek at the Broad and Saluda rivers in Berkeley Co, although the land was not near the Saluda. Alexander Johnston's 4 Sep 1815 will reaffirmed he lived on the waters of Second Creek. Based on a 2 Mar 1773 warrant, Godsend Ruff received a plat for 32 acres on 21 May 1773 abutting the Broad River and adjoining Ezekill Beames land on both the southeast and the northeast and the land of George Elvine; Godsend Ruff's second plat was for 16 acres in Craven Co on the Broad River adjoining the land of Ezekill Beames, Alexander Davison and Michael Elvine. On 6 Oct 1774 Godsend Ruff received his memorial for three tracts on the Broad River in Craven Co, at least two of which abutted the land of Ezekiel Beame. On 9 Apr 1789 John Davison received a plat for 95 acres on Second Creek this area by then having become part of the 96th District; the land abutted that of Ezekel Beem. Thus from 1768 until 1789 Ezekiel Beam was living in Craven Co, later called Newberry District.

The quick movement of Ezekiel Beam's land acquisition through the system and the description of surrounding vacant land sounds very similar to the land acquistion process for our ancestor John Glenn when he arrived in South Carolina in 1768 from overseas, but Ezekiel was not found on the list of protestants arriving in South Carolina during that period from overseas. Of interest is a survey done and plat drawn on 26 Jan 1735 in Berkeley Co, SC by a Geo. Beames, the only survey done by him in the SC Archives. Also note there were Bean and Beane families -- apparently not Beam misspelled -- living on Beaver Creek; on the Saluda River in the 96th District; on 96th Creek and Rocky Creek; on High Hill Creek, Amelia Township, Bereley Co; between the Broad, Saluda and Enoree rivers at Duncan Creek in Craven Co; and in the 96th District, Laurens Co.

Nearby, Albert Beam (1733, Ulster Co, NY - 1798, Fairfield Co, SC) from North Carolina received 200 acres on Beaver Dam Creek on 8 May 1771 and 100 acres on Reedy Creek a branch of Beaver Creek in 1773. This researcher could not find a connection between Ezekiel Beam who acquired land in 1768 and Albert Beam whose family is thoroughly documented in wills or with Albert's grandson another Ezekiel Beam (1790 Chester or Fairfield, SC - 1848, Marshall Co, AL). Online trees show an Ezekiel as the son of Albert, but Ezekiel who acquired the 1768 patent was born long before Albert was married, and Albert did not have a brother or son known to use this name.
