Thomas was well-to-do as shown by his will: 19 Aug 1856 at Accomack Co, VA. To my wife Ann B. Joynes … my Negro man Jim (Satchell) & … except one bed for my daughter Virginia. My wife has the same as her right by law in my other estate as if I had died intestate & her dower right in my slaves by selecting such of them as she chooses & she should not be compelled to pay the expenses of maintaining them. If my wife shall choose to reside in my house in the Village of Onancock, then she shall do so free from rent … including firewood from my land on Deep Creek road & if she does not choose to occupy my house, then she shall not be entitled to the rent of the same. To my daughter Mary S. J. Scarburgh $5,000. To my daughter Sarah E. Duffield my plantation called Woodburn containing 75 acres & also the land I purchased of James W. Twiford containing 50 acres adjoining the land of James Walker. To my daughter Virginia S. Joynes (subject to the rights of her mother) all my houses & lots in the Village of Onancock & 16 acres of wood land on the Deep Creek road & … & Negro girl Catharine & $3,000. To my son William T. Joynes my plantation called Rural Felicity including the land I purchased of Thomas White & also the wood land belonging to Rural Felicity, but not adjoining it & $7,000. To my son Levin S. Joynes my plantation on Onancock Creek called Mount Prospect subject to a charge of $5,000 in favor of my grandchildren, the children of my dec'd daughter Louisa. To my son Thomas R. Joynes my plantation called Sealand (formerly called Cropper Ville) & also my woodland called Wises Swamp formerly belonging to Tully R. Wise & also my Negro man Jim Hatton & ... If I die before the completion of the dwelling house now commenced on Sealand, then to my son Thomas all the material provided for the same & $500. To my son Edward S. Joynes my plantation called Montpelier, my 2 tracts of woodland called Allen's Swamp & Burton's Swamp, my Negro man Lewis (Jr.), my library & $1,000 to complete his education. To my sister Sarah C. Chase $200 & to my sister-in-law Maria S. Joynes $500. To my grandchildren John U., Anna B., Maria L. & Charlotte Dennis, children of my dec'd daughter Louisa, $5,000 among them & if any of them die under age 18 & childless, then to the survivors & if they all die, then the $5,000 to my 3 daughters Mary, Sarah & Virginia. This $5,000 I charge upon the land devised to my son Levin S. Joynes, to be paid at the end of 7 years after my death. I have recently sold to Thomas W. Hargis of Worcester County, Maryland my plantations called Jolly's Neck & Pitts Neck; & also to Robert W. Powell my tavern house & lot in Drummond Town; & also to Samuel C. White my store house & lot at Pungoteague; & also to James J. Ailworth my plantation called Potters' Field; & also to Smith R. Carmine a small tract of wood land on the road from Onancock to Pungoteague. All these lands & lots have been sold by me with warranty against my wife's claim to dower therein. Now if my wife shall claim her dower in all or any of said lots & lands, it is my desire that the purchases of the lands in which she shall claim dower, shall be completely indemnified out of the estate devised in this will (except the legacies to my grandchildren) & towards such indemnity, it is my desire that each of my sons shall contribute two shares & each of my daughters one share & by the way of saving trouble & expense in the premises to all parties concerned, to my wife annually during her life $600 in lieu of her dower in all the lands & lots sold, to be paid by my children in the proportions aforesaid. But if my wife shall refuse to receive the $600 in lieu of her dower, she shall not thereby forfeit any rights under this will or otherwise, to any part of my estate. To my son Levin S. Joynes my Negro man Abel & I release to my son Levin S. Joynes all claims against him for money loaned, charged on my book, on condition that he make no charge against my estate for medical account. The residue to all my children, but not to include any grandchildren. My sons William & Levin & my sons-in-law George P. Scarburgh & Charles B. Duffield Extrs. & they shall not be required to give security in case two or more of them qualify as such.
Codicil: 21 Aug 1858 - I have permitted my son Thomas for several years to have possession of several slaves which were in fact hired to him although no obligation was taken for their hire … in order to prevent any doubt on the subject, I declare that I have heretofore given to my son my Negroes Betsey & her child Esther, my boy Jacob & my girl Judith & all the rest of the Negroes now in his possession which belonged to me are still my property & are subject to disposition of this will. To my son Edward S. Joynes 10 acres of wood land to be laid off from the Sealand tract by a line to start from the line of Sally Dix's land & to run parallel with the division line heretofore separating the Montpelier & Sealand tracts, until it reaches the cleared land on the Sealand tract & hereby revoke the legacy of $1,000 given to my son Edward S. Joynes. The legacy given to my daughter Mary shall be paid in bonds due to me by her husband George P. Scarburgh. I revoke the legacy of $5,000 given to my 4 grandchildren John U., Anne B., Maria L. & Charlotte Dennis & instead give them $6,000 with the same conditions. Prob: There being no witnesses to either the will or codicil, Miers W. Fisher & John W. H. Parker testified as to the handwriting. No security was required on the $100,000 bond.

John Powell was born on 27 Sep 1674 at Pokomoke Hundred, Somerset Co, Maryland. He was the son of Walter Powell and Margaret Berry. John Powell was christened on 25 Oct 1674 at Pokomoke Hundred, Somerset Co, Maryland. He married Sarah Yeardley, daughter of Argoll Yeardley II and Sarah Michael, c 1700. His estate was probated in Jun 1718 at Northampton Co, Virginia. John Powell died in 1718.
John Powell inherited the oceanside Winter Quarter property on St Martins River near Berlin, MD. He moved to Northampton Co, VA where he became a wealthy land owner and planter and was prominent in the larger affairs of the state. John was sheriff and justice in Northampton Co in 1702; his last commission as sheriff was dated 1714.

By will John bequeathed in Virginia a 500-acre plantation in Northampton Co, VA, a 700-acre plantation site on Mattawoman Creek, another 186 acres in Maryland, and in Somerset Co, MD Winter Quarter and Powell's Lott and three slaves including a mulatto.

Father:Col. Thomas Johnson I (Burgess) (c 1615 - b 28 Dec 1658)

The descent of the Johnson family as traced by deeds in Whitelaw's Virginia's Eastern Shore is not very clear. Thomas Johnson II may in fact be the grandfather of Thomas Johnson III rather than his father; there is a large intergenerational gap of fourty-seven years between deaths in the two generations.

Father:Thomas Johnson III (c 1678 - b 12 Jan 1768)

Ann Lukers Johnson was born c 1712. She was the daughter of Thomas Johnson III and (1st wife of Thomas Johnson III) (Unknown).
Ann Lukers Johnson's ancestry is a mystery; one paper traced her origins back five generations to include the Johnson, Powell, Michael, Yardley, Custis, Wilcox, Luke, and Flowerdew families. However, the dates associated with these generations make it impossible for the individuals to be her ancesters; they are closer to contemporaries of hers. She is apparently also a descendant of Luke Luker and Susanna Christian.
