Mother:Frances Wright (a 1603 - b 1660)
Charts:John Satchell Martin * lineage
Mary (Unknown) was born c 1650. She was the daughter of Nicholas Spencer I and Frances Wright.2 Mary (Unknown) married Jacob Remy in 1671.
Jacob Remy, married a woman named Mary who is noted in various family trees as Mary Spencer, Mary Miles, and as Mary Spencer Miles; it is unproven that any of these names were hers, although the likelihood of her being Mary Spencer is possible, if a different Mary Spencer married Joseph Ball, as discussed below.

Jacob was an educated man who worked for Nicholas Spencer, to whom he was indentured, and later for others doing legal work and surveying land. Jacob was well acquainted with both the Spencer and the Marmaduke families. Some well known researchers believe Jacob married Mary Spencer, the daughter of Nicholas Spencer.

Although Nicholas Spencer paid for Jacob's passage to America and they apparently were friends, this marriage premise was questioned because Spencer's will did not mention a daughter or a son-in-law, although not all immediate family were always noted in wills. However, the will of Nicholas Spencer's son, John Spencer, bequeathed money to his sisters Mary and Elizabeth proving there was a daughter named Mary Spencer.

Further making it difficult to sort out the possiblity of a Remy - Spencer marriage is that there were two contemporary Mary Spencers and there were possibly two contemporary Joseph Balls in Virginia, which may have resulted in reporting errors, especially in family histories.
--- The History of Colonial Families of Virginia states Nicholas Spencer had a son Nicholas, a son John who died without issue in 1675, and two daughters, Elizabeth who married William Hancock and Mary. William Hancock said on 27 Dec 1675 John Spencer was sick at his house, and John said he would leave his property to his sisters Mary and Elizabeth. Probate was granted William Hancock in right of his wife and her sister on the estate of John Spencer. Mary married Jacob Remy in 1668.
--- A Mary Spencer, widow of John, married Thomas "Timothy" Carney before 11 Feb 1707.
--- A second Mary Spencer, daughter of Nicholas Spencer married Capt Joseph Ball (no date given, which was unusual in this book) according to Virginia Marriages of the Northern Neck (1649-1800).
--- A Joseph Ball immigrated to Virginia in 1667 according to the book Cavaliers and Pioneers, resulting in a headright for someone importing him to get land; thus this Joseph Ball would have been born circa 1647 or earlier and would have been the right age to marry Mary Spencer.
--- Also in the book Virginia Marriages of the Northern Neck (1649-1800), a Joseph Ball married Mary Mottrom in 1706; ancestry.com family data reports this marriage as 1680.
--- Ancestry.com family data sheets provide conflicting data on Joseph Ball's parents and state he was born in 1680; married a Mary Spencer in 1706 and had a son Spencer Ball; and died in 1721, the same year as Jacob Remy died; so based on these family histories, Mary Spencer would have been unable to marry Jabob Remy either before or after her marriage to Joseph Ball.

For many years, people thought Jacob's wife was Mary Miles, daughter of Marmaduke Miles, but there was no such person as Marmaduke Miles; the man's name was transposed from Miles Marmaduke who left a 16 May 1695 Westmoreland Co, VA will proved on 28 Aug 1695 mentioning only one child, a son. For Miles Marmaduke's will, Jacob Remy and Morgan Williams were trustees of his estate.

A Mary Miles did immigrate to the Lower Rappahanock River, VA area in 1666. (Virginia Genealogies Along and Near the Lower Rappahannock River, 1607-1799: Allen, Buckner, Carter, Harrow, Jackson, Kellum, Long, Miles, Montgomery, Morton, Page, Reade, Roy, Tankersley, Thornley and Wilson.      Jacob Remy II was born in Oct 1675 at Westmoreland Co, Virginia. He was the son of Jacob Remy and Mary (Unknown). Jacob Remy II married Ann Sanford, daughter of Robert Sanford I and Anna Smith ?, in 1699 at Weston, Virginia. Jacob Remy II died on 23 Feb 1726 at Westmoreland Co, Virginia, at age 50. His estate was probated on 31 May 1727 at Westmoreland Co, Virginia.
Jacob Remy II inherited 200 acres of land, the land on which his father lived in Westmoreland Co, VA. On 30 May 1699 William Remey witnessed a deed from Edward Ransdell to Jacob Remy, Jr., his brother in Westmoreland Co, VA (Deed Book 2, pg 186)

The will of his father and land deed are the only proven records for our ancestor Jacob Remy II. The latter's birth and marriage data, including that he married an Ann or that she was Ann Cannon, is based on unverified family group sheets. Problematic is that when Ann's listed parents immgrated to America, Ann would have been of such an age that she should have been listed on their immigration record.

The Remy family also spelled their name Remey, Ramy, Ramey, Rame and Reamy; sometimes within the same generation, and even the same person, used various spellings.

In 1673, Robert purchased 385 acres of land next to Jacob Remey's land; it is unclear whether this was the first or second generation of men by these names.

Two Robert Sanfords with sons Robert had wills probated in Westmoreland Co, VA in the latter 1730s, but it is unclear which one may be her father.

COL Sanford Ramey I1,2

M, ID# 1782, (c 1702 - )
Father:Jacob Remy II (Oct 1675 - 23 Feb 1726)
Mother:Ann Sanford (1680 - 1763)
COL Sanford Ramey I was born c 1702 at Westmoreland Co, Virginia. He was the son of Jacob Remy II and Ann Sanford. COL Sanford Ramey I married Sarah (Unknown) a 1727. COL Sanford Ramey I married Ann Carter a 1729.
Col Sanford Ramey is not mentioned in Jacob Ramey's will so Sanford Ramey may not be a son of this man. The surname Remy, Ramey and derivations thereof appeared interchangable during this generation. The Rameys were known to be in Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia, but whether all these records apply to our Col Sandford Ramey is unknown.

On Mar 1752 the Fairfax Co, VA court ordered "William Payne, James Hamilton, William Duling and Sandford view the road from James Hamilton's to the Church and lay the same off and make it convenient for the publick."

On 18 Sep 1759 a Sanford Remy and this researcher's 8th great grandfather Simon Pearson served together on a trial jury. In Dec 1760 on the motion of Simon Pearson [this researcher's 6th great grandfather] it was ordered that William Payne Junr, Sanford Ramy and Joseph Moxley view the road from the Back Lick Run to the Falls Church which goes through his plantation and report on oath to the next Court whether the same may be conveniently turned.

A Sandford Ramey was on the 1768 Loudoun Co, VA tax list with workers/servants, but it is not known if Sanford had land in Loudoun Co; a Daniel Ramey is on the same list on the land owned by Col William Fitzhugh.

On 22 Mar 1769 the suit of a Sandford Ramey with lawyer Francis Dade against Simon Pearson and Gerrard Trammell and their attorney William Ellzey for debt went to trial. The defendants were found not guilty and recovered their costs. The next day Philip Ludwell Lee esquire vs Simon Pearson went to trial with Sandford Ramey on the jury, which seems like it would have been prejudicial. After the verdict was reached Lee never returned to court and the case was dismissed with an order that Simon receive 5 shillings plus his costs.

A Sanford Ramey who was married to Lydia wrote his will 16 Apr 1825 in Loudoun Co, VA. The will included, "I give the farm I now occupy to my nephew Sanford I Ramey son of my brother Jacob Ramey decd." When his widow was approved by the court to proceed with the probate, the minutes stated, "...ordered to be recorded and on the oath of Lydia Ramey
the latria named in said Will also made assurances and together with Jno Thomas and Sanford I Ramey her security into a acknowledged a bond in the penalty of fifteen thousand dollars conditioned according to law Certificate is granted her for a probate thereof in due form." This Sanford Ramey with a brother named Jacob who also has a son named Sanford could be our ancestor although no evidence for a wife named Lydia was found for the elder Sanford and no son for Jacob named Sanford was found as yet.

Jacob 'John' Ramey III was born c 1710 at Westmoreland Co, Virginia. He was the son of Jacob Remy II and Ann Sanford. Jacob 'John' Ramey III married Sarah Fryer / Fryor a 1730. Jacob 'John' Ramey III died in 1787 at Loudoun Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 10 Sep 1787.
Jacob Ramey III, a planter, recorded in 1739 in the Prince William Co, VA court records a 150-acre grant called Great Rocky Cedar Run where he lived which was deeded to him by a Mr. Thornton. DAR application records note Jacob provided material aid during the Revolutionary War.

Between 1744 - 1759 using the name Remy, Jacob and his siblings and at least one son recorded 15 land deeds, releases, leases and bonds which are indexed in the Fairfax Co, VA 1742 - 1797 deeds; included are Jacob senior, Jacob (likely his son), Benjamin, Samuel, Sandford, Sarah and William. Based on the index apparently Jacob and his wife Sarah deeded land to their son Jacob in 1753.

On 27 Mar 1751 Thomas Cockeril was appointed overseer of the road whereof Jacob Ramey was lately surveyor. On 28 Mar 1751 the court ordered Jacob Ramey, Fielding Turner, James Lane and Fielding Turner [name written twice] inventory and appraise the estate of John Manning deceased and Administrator return the same to the next Court. On 29 Mar 1751 apparently in trying to settle an estate in Grayson vs Hutchison, the court sent possible neighbors Jacob Ramey, James Tillet, Sampson Turley, Moses Linton, George During, William Reardin, Thomas Bosman, Moses Christmas, James Brown, John Keen and Edward Seed to take possession of estate property for the sherrif to sell. On 1 Apr 1751 Jacob's civic duties continued when the court ordered Fielding Turner, Burges Berkley, Robert Colclough and Jacob Ramey to inventory and appraise the Daniel Young estate and the Administrator John Dalton return the same to the next Court.

On 19 and 20 Aug 1752 Jacob was on jury duty in Ross and Poultney vs Mead; Ross vs Porter; and Bogle vs West. Jacob testified in John Camden vs Daniel Thomas on 21 Nov 1752 and was paid 325 pounds tobacco for attending court 17 days.

In 1761 on the Loudoun Co, VA tax list, two Jacob Remys were included; one Jacob is noted as a constable and has a negro named Joe and the other Jacob had a negroes named Prince, Judah and Dinah. Because of the reuse of this family name, there is no way to tell if one or none of these men are our Jacob III. By 1768 a Jacob Ramey senior is listed with a black named Jane, and a Jacob Ramey junior is listed with a John Ramey and servants Mitch and Lanergin.

Note Sarah Fryer, wife of Jacob, cannot be Sarah Fryer, wife of John Fryer because John Fryer did not die until circa 1726 at which time he had two sons; so based on a 1712 birth date for Sarah wife of Jacob Ramey, she would not have been of marriagable age to have had a family with John Fryer by 1726.

Other researchers proposed Sarah, wife of Jacob, could be Sarah Troyer or Sarah Thornton.....
