Charles Henry Wiltsberger Lanphier1,2,3,4

M, ID# 1875, (14 Apr 1820 - 19 Mar 1903)
Father:Robert Going Lanphier I (18 Sep 1765 - 27 Aug 1846)
Mother:Elizabeth 'Betsey' Sears (8 Mar 1774 - 6 Jun 1853)
Charles Henry Wiltsberger Lanphier was born on 14 Apr 1820 at Alexandria, Virginia. He was the son of Robert Going Lanphier I and Elizabeth 'Betsey' Sears. Charles Henry Wiltsberger Lanphier married Margaret 'Mag' Taylor Crenshaw, daughter of John Hart Crenshaw and Francine Taylor, on 25 Feb 1846. Charles Henry Wiltsberger Lanphier died on 19 Mar 1903 at Springfield, Illinois, at age 82. He was buried at Oak Ridge Cem, Springfield, Illinois.
Charles Henry Wiltsberger Lanphier may actually be the son of his oldest sister Elizabeth who was 19 when Charles was born; otherwise Charles was born 6 years after his mother's average childbearing years ended and five years after her previous birth.

Charles was a prominent and influential resident of Springfield, IL for over sixty years. He was the second publisher of the Illinois State Register -- a leading newspaper, served in the Illinois legislature, held many offices of public trust, and was a leader of local and state affairs.

In 1836 Charles moved to Illinois with his brother-in-law William Walters who that year had begun publication of the Illinois State Register at Vandalia, IL. He joined the paper as an apprentice printer and when the office moved to Springfield in 1839 he moved there. In 1846 when the Mexican war began William Walters joined the service and leased the paper office to Charles. William did not survive the war and Charles continued publication of the paper until 1863 when he sold the establishment.

In 1860 Charles and his wife Margaret were living in Springfield with their family and working in a postion related to the Illinois State Register. He had already amassed $30,000 in real estate and $5,000 in personal property. Also living in the household was an unknown Elizabeth Lanphier age 30 -- not his married sister Elizabeth and too old to be a niece.

In 1870 Charles was age 50, working as the Circuit Clerk and living in Springfield with his wife Margaret, their chldren, and Charles' sisters Martha and Mary. He had real estate valued at $75,000 and personal property of $5000. In 1880 Charles' sisters still resided with the family. By 1900 Charles' namesake son Charles junior and his wife Emma; Charles' senior's sister Anna Idella, and Charles senior's granddaughter Annie R. Lanphier age 11 born in June 1889 were living in the household. In addition to family members Charles always had a number of servants.

For ten years Charles was a member of the democratic state committee and through his paper was a potent factor in shaping and directing Illinois party policies. Charles was an intimate friend of Senator Stephen A. Douglas who sought and received Charles' advice on all political questions. He was bold and fearless in expressing his views and his integrity and honor were unquestioned. He opposed the war and served on a state war board at the request of the governor. In 1864 he was elected county clerk of the circuit court in which capacity he served until 1872. He ran for state treasurer but was defeated. Charles lived at 1126 or 1426 South Seventh Street in Springfield, IL and his descendants still lived in the Springfield area in 1954.

William "Will" Bosman / Bozman I married Eleanor "Ellen" White, daughter of ENS Lewis White, on 1 Mar 1660/61 at Hungars Parish, Northampton Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 5 Aug 1664 at Somerset Co, Maryland.
William Bosman was in Northampton Co, VA in 1649 when his name appeared on a headright to a land patent granted to Ralph Barlowe.

In Northampton Co, VA William and Thomas Walley witnessed the 13 Jan 1661/62 will of John Robinson, whose wife was Mary.

William participated in the call for settlers to move to Maryland, moving with his wife and seven children, between the Manokin and Pocomoke Rivers during the 1663 state boundary disputes, becoming one of the first settlers in the Manokin - Annemessex region. He played a role in the failed attempt of Col Edmund Scarburgh, our 12th great grandfather, to forcibly annex part of Maryland into Virginia in the mid 1660s.

William was a planter, which means he grew large tracts of tobacco. His home, which is no longer standing, was in a beautiful area right on the north side of the Manokin River immediately east of Goose Creek on 1,200 acres he patented in 1662 as More and Case It. He also patented 300 acres called Bosman's Choice in 1663 and 300 acres called Tinson in 1665.

William Bosman and William Major bought 200 acres land in 1663 at tract N111, Silver Beach, Northampton Co, VA by an unrecorded deed from Stephen Charlton. William and Ellen Bosman reassigned the land to John Tilney, and Willam Major provided a release for any interest he had. For a long time the gut between this land and tract N 110 was called Bosman's Gut.

In 1664 William was on the Maryland commission for granting land warrants and administering justice in the region below the Choptank River.

William's undated will named wife Ellinor, exceutrix, sons John, William and George (all to receive land at age 17); daughters Mary, Catharine, Bridgett (under age 15) and Ann; and overseers Capt. William Thorne and Thomas Bloyse.

The family name is also spelled Boseman, Bossman, and Bozman and the family is said to be of Dutch origins.

In Mar 1662/3 George patented 500 acres called Mitchell's Choice and Improvement in west Princess Anne, Somerset Co, MD. After his second marriage, the 500 acres was re-surveyed into two parts in 1669. George Mitchell had no living sons, and rent rolls from 1666 to 1723 show his sons-in-law George Downes possessed 250 of the acres and Thomas Dashiell possessed the other half. In 1729 Thomas Dashiell and his family gave their half to the Downes family, thus rejoining the 500 acres into one property.

George Mitchell owned lands on Monie Bay between Little Monie and Great Monie (Monye) Creeks in 1666; Great Monie Creek is now known as Monie Creek and is northwest of Princess Anne, MD.

On 29 Sep 1668 the marriage banns of George and his second wife Isabell were published in Somerset Co. George had no living sons and divided his land in half between sons-in-law George Downes and Thomas Dashiell by 1723.
