      Robert Howson served as Clerk of Court for Northampton Co, VA in 1655, 1705 and again in 1710 and was a surveyor on the Eastern Shore in 1714. A substantial property owner, in 1669 Robert patented 6,000 acres at Pocomoke Neck, Accomack Co, VA "upon the freshes of Potomack River" for the transportation of 120 persons into the colony.

Robert was named as an heir on 3 March 1719 at Northampton Co, VA in the will of William Kendall senior, the husband of Sorrowful Margaret.

Robert's 5 Apr 1720 will provided: To Scarbrough Robinson her choice of my gold rings. To William Waters, Sarah Custis, Gartrude Harmanson, George Harmanson, Margaret Kendall, Tully Robinson and Sarah his wife, John Mapp and Esther his wife, to each of them £10 apiece for mourning apparel and 20s apiece for a gold ring. To my brother-in-law James Pume, Esquire and Ann his wife living at Foe Hall near London the money due to me from the Lords Comission. My executors to settle accounts with Mr. Christopher Smith, merchant and my partner, concerning a cargo of goods and tobacco as appears in my book No. 12. To my godson Howsen Mapp my 300 acre plantation bought of Josias Cowdry and Samuel and Thomas Church lying on Mattawoman Creek at Hungars Creek and two negroes, viz., Hary and Sarah his wife. Sarah also received a share of slaves George, Ester and Fanda along with Samuel Mapp and Palmer Kendall daughter of William Kendall Jr. She also received a share of the remaining estate.

      Esther Mathews was frequently in court with legal business as a result of Mathews, Kendall, Powell, Howsen, Mapp and Carter family wills.

According to Moody Miles, Esther's 5 Dec 1732 will bequeathed: "To my grandson (lost) Map. To my grandchild Sarah Map. If my son Howsen Map has a child then to that child a feather bed. To Sarah Kendall. To daughter-in-law Lear Map. Remaining cloathes to be divided by my three daughters-in-law. My three sons John, Samuel and Howsen Map residual legatees and extrs. Witnesses: Michael Christian, Thomas (T) Johnson & Edward (X) Widgeon." The inventory of Esther's personal property showed possession not only of such necessary items as skillets and pots with pot hooks, foot wheels, hand wheels, grindstone and anchor, flax break, two heaters, nineteen chairs of which seven were leather, five chests and chests of drawers, bedsteads and tables, 19 yards of Virginia linen, 33 and 29 yards coarse linen, one pair money scales, one Bible and five books.
