James Dashiell I (Burgess)1,2,3,4,5,6

M, ID# 2038, (c 1634 - Aug 1697)
Father:James Dashiell (c 1603 - c 1647)
Mother:Margaret Inglis (c 1604 - )
Charts:John Satchell Martin * lineage
James Dashiell I (Burgess) was born c 1634 at Edinburgh, Midlothian Co, Scotland. He was the son of James Dashiell and Margaret Inglis. James Dashiell I (Burgess) emigrated in 1653 from Yorkshire, England. He married Ann Cannon, daughter of Edward Cannon and Ann (Unknown), in 1659 at Northumberland Co, Virginia. James Dashiell I (Burgess) died in Aug 1697 at Wetipquin, Somerset Co, Maryland. His estate was probated on 31 Aug 1697 at Somerset Co, Maryland.
James Dashiell was a Scot by birth and maternal ancestry and by paternal descent of French extraction. James' parents names are based on family group sheet data as opposed to original records because the primary records or bible records for his natal family have not been found.

James was literate and a member of the Church of England. He also used the names Dashiel, Dashiels, Dashield, and Dasheete. In 1653 James immigrated from Yorkshire, England to Northumberland Co, VA where he was first recorded in Virginia. Whether James Dashiell and Ann Cannon were married in Northumberland Co or Accomack Co, VA is unclear. James Dashiell apparently traveled back and forth between Northumberland Co, VA and Somerset Co, MD for several years. In 1655 and again in 1656 he was noted as one of the early settlers in Maryland.

James moved circa 1663 from Northumberland Co, VA to the Wicomico section of Maryland and became one of the first settlers in this region which later became Somerset Co, MD. He brought to Maryland his wife Ann, son James and niece Elizabeth Dashiell, who later married Robert Collier in 1675. James entered the county at the same time as David Spence, who patented 1,000 acres called Despense on 8 Dec 1663, half of which James later acquired in 1668. A 1935 family history stated the Dashiell family also had land patents in Delaware.

James settled on the south side of the Wicomico River at the mouth of Dashiell's Creek where he built a large brick home and purchased all the land from the mouth to the head of the creek. In 1671 when he served on a jury he was living on the east side of Wetipquin Creek, a tributary of the Nanicoke River, which is now in Wicomico County. James built his plantation home called "Long Hill" about 1767 on the north bank of Wetipquin Creek; it remained in the family for many generations and was almost completely restored in 1999 when Donald Singleton was the resident caretaker of the property (donsingle at aol dot com.)

James was a planter, a term used for farmers of considerable acreage who grew mainly tobacco, a crop so important that it was the currency of expediency for that time and place. He owned 500 acres of Despense, 300 acres called Meeches Right, 200 acres of Meeches Desert, 50 acres called Royston, 50 acres called Wolf Trap Neck, 150 acres called Becknam, 1,000 acres called The Lott, and 300 acres of Long Hill which included James' plantation home and the family burial ground where he and his wife were buried. The cemetery at the home was terraced, running to the water front.

James was a highway surveyor for the new county of Somerset in 1666; on a 1671 grand jury deciding religious teaching should be regularly provided in four homes in the county; a justice in 1672; a member of the county commissioners; a member of the Lower House Maryland Assembly representing Somerset Co, MD in 1678, 1681 and 1682; in the House of Burgesses in 1682; a county military commisioned officer in 1696; and a customs officer in 1697.

James served as a county justice as appointed under the Commision of the Peace. As a justice of the peace from circa 1672 until 1694 he participated in key forming events for the county. In 1683 James was appointed as one of several commissioners to establish the first five towns in the county. In 1689 he was appointed one of several men to regulate the civil affairs of Somerset Co, MD and signed an oath of loyalty to the English king and queen. In 1692 at a meeting of the county justices of the peace, James participated as a commissioner in dividing the county into four parishes consisting of Manokin and Monie, Pocomoke and Annemessex, Wicomico and Nanticoke, and Bogernorton and Mattapony. At a county meeting of the justices of the peace, James helped remove Sherrif William Whittington from office.

At his death James owned 1,000 acres of land, 232.1.7 pounds sterling and had 6 servants. He left his son James 550 acres of Meeches Desert, Meeches Delight, and Wolf Trap Neck; his son Thomas 150 acres of Becknam; his son Robert 300 acres at Long Hill; and his daughter Jane personalty. He did not mention how many slaves he owned. He was buried in the family cemetery at Long Hill Plantation on Wetipquin Creek.

In Somerset, Worcester and Wicomico counties of Maryland stone was not easily available for tombstones until it was imported for such purpose from the Philadelphia, PA area. Dashiells are buried in Wicomico County, MD, but the earliest tombstone in the county is dated 1739. Wooden markers were still in use in some areas through the twentieth century.

The Dashiell family cemetery called Long Hill Cemetery was in good condition in 1999 and was accessible via a lane south off of Wetipquin Road, about 1/2 mile east of its intersection with Royal Oak Road. On 3 Aug 1997 Shari Handley, Jill Pevear, Chris Pevear, Robert Simms, and Paul Willing made a listing of the data available on the cemetery markers:

More research to establish areas of authenticity is definitely required because, beginning with the man reported to be James' great grandfather in the book "Dashiell Family Record," the span of years between generations is sometimes too great to be accepted as a continuous lineage. A popular twentieth century pursuit was "connecting" American ancestors to already proven illustrious European heritages for same or similar last names. The purported lineage from James born in 1634 to Eldinus born circa 1000 has insufficient documentation in the book "Dashiell Family Records" to be considered accurate but is provided only for interest. While the lineage may be mostly factual because the family on which it was based was rich and thus had to ensure they kept meticulous records for inheritance purposes, the family may not be that of our James' ancestors.
