     Henry Satchell I was born c 1683 at Northampton Co, Virginia. He was the son of John "Jno" Satchell I and Alice (Unknown). Henry Satchell I married Elizabeth Ansil, daughter of John? Ansil and Elizabeth (Unknown), c 1718. Henry Satchell I died in 1747 at Accomack Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 29 Dec 1747 at Accomack Co, Virginia.
      Henry Satchell I was known as a farmer, carpenter and builder, contracting to build structures. From his father, Henry inherited only an iron bound chest and an iron pot. In 1709 Henry bought 134 acres land along Gargafia Road, Accomack Co, VA just north of the town of Accomac for 4,020 pounds of tobacco from George and Mary Parker. This land was on the south side of Indian Town Branch, which was the southern head branch of old Nuswattocks Creek, later known as Parker's Creek. In 1747 Henry Satchell, wife Elizabeth, left 100 acres at the north end to his son Southy and the balance as 75 acres to his son Henry.

In 1735 in Drummond Town, Henry was the workman who built a shed or annex at the "Prison where the Chimmeny is."

Henry made a will on 21 Mar 1747 at Accomack Co, VA: To wife Elizabeth plantation where I now live, being 100 acres, during her widow & then to my son Southy Satchell. To son Henry Satchell plantation where he now lives including 75 acres adjoining the Custis property. To daughter Sarah White & her husband Henry White, negroes for life, then to their chiidren. To daughter Elizabeth Bundick & her husband John Bundick, negroes for life, then to their children. To daughter Ann Abbott & her husband Richard Abbott, negro for life then to any child of the said Ann to when she may see fit to give it. Grandson William Satchell, son of my son Southy Satchell. Grandau Ann, daughter of Southy Satchell. Wife, son Henry, daughter Elizabeth Bundick, daughter Ann Abbott residual legatees. Wife Elizabeth & sons Southy & Henry executors. Witnesses: Stephen Fitzgerald, John Blaxton, Anne Blaxton.

Ellen Martin found a record showing Henry's wife's mother was an Ansil, and Janet Broadbent believed Henry's wife was a Holdsworth; it is possible that both are correct and Elizabeth was a Holdsworth whose mother remarried an Ansil.

William Satchell married Comfort Moore c 1710 at Northampton Co, Virginia. William Satchell married Susanna Bowdoin ? c 1722. William Satchell died in 1737 at Northampton Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 10 May 1737 at Northampton Co, Virginia.
      William Satchell made a will on 13 April 1737 at Northampton Co, VA. To my daughter Susanna Satchell my 100 acre plantation whereon I now live, and also 75 acres bounded by a line of marked trees between me and John Ellegood after paying £5 to each of her sisters, viz., Hhamer and Henritta Satchell. To my wife Susanna the use of my remaining estate during her widowhood and then to be divided by my wife and five children, viz., Elizabeth, Comfort, Sarah Mears, Hhamer and Henritta Satchell.      Robert Going Lanphier I was born on 18 Sep 1765 at Alexandria, Virginia. He was the son of Going Lanphier and Elizabeth Wilkerson. Robert Going Lanphier I married Elizabeth 'Betsey' Sears, daughter of William Bernard Sears I and Elizabeth Young Whaley, in 1794. Robert Going Lanphier I died on 27 Aug 1846 at Washington, District of Columbia, at age 80. He was buried at Trinity United Methodist Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia.
      Robert Goin/Going Lanphier and his siblings were religious, righteous and upright in their conduct. Family papers which were likely incorrect noted Robert was born in 1775 but the transcription of his tombstone states 1765. Because Robert entered a lease in 1791 and he had to be age 21 -- the age of majority -- to do so, he indeed was most likely born in 1765.

On 21 Apr 1791 William and Agnes Hepburn and John and Agnes Dundas of Alexandria leased Robert Going Langphier [sic] of Alexandria from 10 May 1791 at 24 Spanish milled dollars at 6 or equivalent specie annually part of a lot at St. Asaph Street and Queen Street in Alexandria. The witnesses were Caleb Earp and James Scott.

Furthermore, although Robert was noted as the seventeen-year-old "Lamphiere" who submitted a plan for the US Capitol design in response to a 1792 advertisement, he must have been age 27 to have competed in this event, and thus born in 1765. Robert's submission was rejected along with all others received at that time, but his plan was one of only three of the sixteen plans which was given consideration. The Commissioners for the District of Columbia wrote George Washington on 19 Jul 1792 stating "Lamphier’s Plan is given up as impracticable." The young Lanphier, whose “Elevation for the Capitol” of 1792 is owned by the Maryland Historical Society, later worked in the Federal City as a carpenter, jeweler and engraver.

Robert never lost his interest in the Capitol building. The 6 Nov 1830 Alexandria Gazette noted an advancement in the arts of the nation after Robert, a seal cutter and engraver, had produced an exquisite steel seal with a profile design of the capitol which showed the depth of his skills.

Robert and his wife Elizabeth lived near their parents in Alexandria, VA where he was a dyer, teacher, carpenter and boarding house keeper. In 1797 he offered ten waterfront lots for sale there. In 1804 Robert sold a lot he received from his father which had a smokehouse and a two-story, four-room dwelling that was either built on St. Asaph Street in Alexandria by his father or by himself with his father.

From 29 Apr 1802 - 6 Aug 1802 Robert G. Lanphier of Blandensburg, MD located across the Potomac River from Alexandria and up the Anacostia River, ran a real estate ad in conjunction with his brother William Lanphier of Alexandria in the Alexandria Times; District of Columbia Daily Advertiser; Columbian Advertiser and Commercial, Mechanic, and Agricultural Gazette. The brothers advertised a two-story wood home on a 48' x 60' lot on the west side of St. Asaph St between Queen and Princess streets in Alexandria, VA. Also for sale for cash or wet or dry goods was an unimproved lot on St Asaph St near the home. At this time Robert was only about 27 and William a little older, so this may have been one of the properties owned by their father.

In 1806 Robert advertised he was in the carpentry business in Alexandria, VA. That year he bought a lot at 518 King Street in Alexandria which he sold, after building a house, at substantial profit seven years later.

In the 1808 Alexandria, VA census Robert was noted as a shopkeeper living in a three-story home with 3 fire buckets and 13 people total including 2 slaves. Robert was the only white male above age 16 and there were a total of 10 other whites in the household; the census was done in Jan - Feb 1808 -- before his son James was born in Sep 1808 -- so there was one unknown white person in the household.

Robert was working as a joiner, a more sophisticated profession than carpentry, in 1810 when he lived in a home he owned on King Street in Alexandria, VA. There were fourteen whites and two slaves living in his home.

From at least 1815 until 1823 Robert occupied Anthony Cazenove's 24 by 30 foot two-story store and dwelling and 12 by 14 foot one-story detached kitchen on the north side of the 500 block of King Street, second building from the corner of Pitt Street and one block from the market square in Alexandria, VA. The walls and roof of both buildings were of wood. He worked as a dyer and sold yard goods, offering for sale men's and women's silk and woolen clothes dyed in a variety of colors and Marino shawls.

In 1820 Robert had a large household living in Alexandria, VA. Robert was age 45 or older and his wife Elizabeth was shown as age 26 - 44, born 1771 on her tombstone and 1774 according to family papers. The children included sons Charles less than age 10 (born 1820 and possibly the son of Robert's sister Elizabeth); William age 16-18 (born 1803); Robert (born 1799), and an unknown male; and for ages 26 - 44 two unknown males resided with the family. Daughters included Sarah and Mary less than age 10 (born 1812 and 1815), one daughter 10-15 which would have been either Ann or Martha -- both of whom survived so the census taker either missed one or miscategorized her; 3 females age 16-25 including Elizabeth (born 1801) and two unknown females. Regarding the unknown residents, one of the age 16-25 females may have been Martha who was age 14 and was not accounted for else where. Otherwise all 4 of the unknown males and females were likely boarders because the family advertised to take in boarders. Three slaves lived with Robert: one male under age 14, one male age 14-26 and one female age 26-44. Four people were reported as engage in manufacturing.

Robert was also accepting boarders in 1821 and 1822. He continued offering shawls for sale in 1822 and 1823 and added bonnets in 1823. In 1822 he opened a night school at home teaching architectural and lineal drawing as well as reading, writing and arithmetic. In 1824 he went bankrupt and moved to Washington DC, which may have meant he was living in the portion of Alexandria which had been ceded to to Washington DC because during that period (1791-1846) part of present-day Alexandria, VA and all of Arlington Co, VA was part of the District of Columbia.

Robert is buried in Trinity United Methodist Church near the Wilkes Street side in Alexandria, VA in Row D, Lot 7 toward the middle of the cemetery. The tombstone indicates he was born in 1765; most documentation indicates a 1775 birth but estimates of his parents' marriage would also support a 1765 birth date.

A home of the east side of St Asaph St north of Queen St became the subject of litigation with Robert's children in 1853. A 2 Mar 1853 Alexandria Gazette article noted a suit by Paulina C. Fowle stating she had rented a home with an 48' x 62' lot on the east side of St Asaph St and north of Queen St in Alexandria, VA and on 2 Aug 1852 she was disposessed her of the property by the heirs of Robert G. Lanphier including his widow Harriet and children Elizabeth Baker, Martha Ditty, Ann Walters, Mary Lanphier and Charles Lanphier and their respective spouses. A ruling was anticipated for 7 Mar 1853.

      Elizabeth's 12 May 1748 will mentions her mother Elizabeth Ansil, but it is unknown whether Ansil was the maiden name of Elizabeth who died in 1749 as well as her mother's married name or if her mother had remarried. Researchers Mark Lewis and Elizabeth Perry postulated because the same Southy first appears with the naming of Elizabeth's son Southy Satchell that Elizabeth may have been related to the Littleton or Southy family.
Researcher Ellen Martin postulated Elizabeth may have been the daugher of John Ansil, the son of Robert Ansill, and may have been first married to a Mr. Holdsworth or that Elizabeth may have been born a Holdsworth. The online Mears Collection at the Eastern Shore Public Library refers to Elizabeth as Elizabeth Holdsworth when discussing her marriage to Henry Satchell; this researcher has thus postulated that Elizabeth was first married to a Holdsworth.

Elizabeth's will proved in 1749 leaves to her children a bible, pewter, sadle, mare, spinning wheels, and two slaves who were never to be parted from the county: To daughter Sarah White. Daughter Elizabeth. Daughter Anne Abbott. Son Southy, provided he pay to my mother Elizabeth Ansil 20 s. country produce during her natural life. To son Henry Satchell, he to pay my mother 10 s. Bal. of estate except my clothing to be divided between my 5 children, Southy Satchell, Henry Satchell, Sarah White, Elizabeth Bundick & Ann Abbott. To daughter in law Susan Satchell, wife of Southy. To Rachel, wife of Henry Satchell. To Tabitha White, daughter Henry White. Sons Southy & Henry executors. Witnesses: Stephen Fitzgerald, Jacob Dunton, Benjamin Dunton.

Southy Satchell married Sarah Kendall, daughter of William Kendall III (the younger) and Jane "Joane" Parks / Parkes, c 1738 at Northampton Co, Virginia. Southy Satchell died in 1759 at Northampton Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 10 Apr 1759 at Northampton Co, Virginia.
      Southy Satchell was a bricklayer and building contractor like his father. He moved from Accomack Co to Northampton Co, VA; while primarily situated in Northampton he had many Accomack contacts. From his mother Southy inherited the family Bible and from his father the only family acreage, which passed to him through his mother. About 1750 Southy purchased the two adjoining Eyre and Baston plantations totalling 232 acres in Northampton Co. In 1751 Southy sold the 100 acres he inherited from his father.

In Southy's 18 Jan 1759 will proved in Apr 1759 he bequeathed his wife all of his lands and divided his slaves among his wife and children; his son William was to inherit the land after his wife. His will stated: To loving wife Sarah negroes Luke, Ben and Rachel, my still head and worm, the use of negro wench Dinah and the use of estate until dau. Sarah is 16. To son William gold ring and my plantation that I bought of (Col.) Littleton Eyre and a plantation I bought of Thomas Batson, totaling 230 A. To dau. Ann Satchel gold ring marked "AS." To dau. Betty Satchel negro boy Jacob and gold ring marked "AH." To dau. Sarah Satchel negro boy George and gold ring posed, "Where Virtue lies love never dyes." To dau. Palmer Satchel negro boy Solomon and 15s. To dau. Joanna Satchel negro boy Daniel. All five daus. single and not of lawful age. Wife and son William extrs. Sarah Kendall married Southy Satchell and Sarah Kendall c 1738 at Northampton Co, Virginia. She died in 1784 at Northampton Co, Virginia. Her estate was probated on 9 Nov 1784 at Northampton Co, Virginia.
      A month after her husband's death, Sarah Kendall deeded her 200 acres to her son William Satchell as that "whereon I now dwell." She continued to live there, while William presumably moved to tract N52J and built Mount Pleasant. Late in life Sarah Kendall received a life estate of 100 acres from her son William in 1779.

Sarah's Nov 1781 will with a Sep 1784 codicil was proved in 23 Nov 1784 and divided twelve slaves and personnal property, including silver and metal ware, among her family. According to Moody Miles her will stated: To my son William Satchell, negro fellow Luke and a bond I hold against him for £140. To my dau. Betty Dunton, negro fellow Ben, negro boy Joe and gold sleeve buttons. To dau. Sarah Kendall, negro wench Patty and negro boys Natt and Rhusbin. To dau. Parmer Satchell, negro boy Tom and negro wench Esther, 4 Queens china dishes, 6 hard mettle plates, 6 silver table spoons, the latter chattels to compensate for depreciation of her money due from her father's estate. To dau. Joanna Harmanson, negro fellow Billie, negro girl Grace, 6 silver table spoons, bell mettle skillett, and 10 hard mettle plates. To son in law John Kendall, a £117 bond I hold against him. Son William and son in law William Harmanson executors. Witnesses: Mary Satchell, William Dolby, Susanna 'X' Smith. Codicil 24 Sept. 1784: To dau. Parmer Satchell, small negroes Ellender and Amey.      William Satchell I was born c 1744 at Accomack Co, Virginia. He was the son of Southy Satchell and Sarah Kendall. William Satchell I married Mary Stockley, daughter of Christopher Stockley II and Sabra Stewart, c 1766. William Satchell I died b 14 Jan 1794 at Northampton Co, Virginia. His estate was probated at Northampton Co, Virginia.
      William Satchell inherited the family estate. He wrote his will on 21 Dec 1793 at Northampton Co, VA: To my loving wife Mary during her life the 350 acres plantation whereon I now live, the 100 acres purchased of the extrx. of William Nottingham dec'd, ns. Levy, old Luke, Ezekiel, James, Kelly, Jamima, and Agness, and my largest gilt framed looking glass. And after wife's death all the above to my son Charles Stockley Satchell. To my wife my riding chair with a top. To my son Christopher Satchell the 464 acre tract in Accomack whereon he now lives, ns. Tully (if found), James, Esther and her youngest child, Rachel, and Pegg. To my son William the plantation where my mother Sarah Satchell dec'd formerly lived, together with land purchased of Joseph Dalby, and the land purchased of John Kendall containing 658 acres provided that William pays £100 towards the support of my son Southy Stewart Satchell (to be brought up in the profession of a doctor). Also my land on Hog Island to my son William. To my dau. Adah Snead all the property given her at her marriage and since for which I have an account against William Snead. To my dau. Sarah Satchell ns. Peter, Tamer, Rica, Lity, Sam, Betsey, Sarah and Grace. The 25 acres purchased from the estate of John Stoughton Harmanson, and the 74 acres purchased of Robert Nottingham to be sold. Sons Christopher and William executors. Witnesses: Charles West, Sr., John Dolby, Benjamin Dolby.

     William Lanphier I was born c 1773 at Fairfax Co, Virginia. He was the son of Going Lanphier and Elizabeth Wilkerson. William Lanphier I married Mary Elinor Sexsmith on 2 Feb 1804 at Fredericksburg, Spotysvania Co, Virginia. William Lanphier I died on 28 Mar 1851 at Memphis, Shelby Co, Tennessee.
      Numerous references to a William Lanphier who was a teacher, merchant and druggist are in the Alexandria, VA newspapers and are believed to be to this ancestor, as opposed to his nephew by the same name born in 1803 who became a civil engineer. Advertisements for William Lanphier junior, a surgeon dentist, may be for the druggist as his advertisements requested customers leave their name and address at William Lanphier's pharmacy; therefore junior in this case may be to designate age as opposed to his being son of a William.

William Lanphier moved to Alexandria, VA in 1781 and lived on Washington Street at Prince Street in Alexandria from 1797 until 1830. A William G. Lanphier sold a two-story frame house on the west side of St Asaph Street, Alexandria, VA between Queen and Princess streets in 1802.

William had a Fairfax Street circulating library of history, novels and romances in 1797. He was a French, and later Spanish, teacher who offered lessons from at least 1813 through 1827 at various locations, including behind Lewis Neale's store on Fairfax Street. William opened a French school at the east end of the LaFayette Arch on Washington Street in 1824.

In the 1808 Alexandria, VA census William was listed with an occupation of U. S. Office living in a two-story home with no fire buckets and a total of 6 people including 1 slave. Two males above age 16 were living in his home, the second one being Geo Sexsmith; William and his sister both married into the Sexsmith family. William lived 16 doors away from his father Going.

William was noted on the census as serving as a customs house officer who leased a residence at Queen and Washington streets in Alexandria, VA in 1810 where he lived with with a total of five whites and two slaves.

As commissioner with John Neil, William sold a frame house on the south side of Wilkes Street, Alexandria, VA between Pitt and Royal streets in 1822.

William Lanphier and Company, an apothecary, moved to the former Richard Litle location on King Street between Royal and Pitt streets in 1828 where he sold drugs, medicines, dyes, soda powders, various waters, paints, bronzes, varnishes, combs, brushes, soaps and perfumery until 1830.

In 1830 William was residing in Alexandria, VA with 2 males under 5, 1 male between 5-9, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 50-59 [William], 1 female 10-14, 2 female 20-29, 1 female 40-49 and 1 female slave 10-23.

In 1845 William moved to Memphis, TN. In 1850 William was enumerated as Wm Lamphier, a physician age 75. He and his wife Mary age 64 and noted as born in Ireland were living in Memphis, Shelby Co, TN in the household of Thomas E. Hills, a 43-year-old cabinet maker born in MA who had married their daugther Elizabeth. Also living in the Hills household was Anna Lanphier, born in Virginia and listed as only age 16, and Albert Lanphier, age 2. Anna was most likely the William's granddaughter, the daughter of his son John who was living with his brother Thomas in the county; Anna's mother had died.

George W. Lanphier (1824-1845) of Alexandria who died in Tennessee may have been his son.
