Charts: | Virginia Custis Winslett lineage Oma Lavinia Strong lineage |
Samuel C. Strong was born on 7 Feb 1813 at Roane Co, Tennessee. He was the son of Masten Strong and Rebecca McCormack. Samuel C. Strong married Sarah J. Morrison, daughter of Rev William Morrison I and Elizabeth Snider, on 7 Feb 1833 at Saint Clair Co, Alabama. Samuel C. Strong died a 1880 at Cleburne Co, Alabama.
Samuel C. Strong apparently sold 47 acres on 1 Aug 1837 to Thomas Blake in Mardisville, Cleburne Co, AL for cash. "Thomas Blake, Assignee of Samuel Strong has deposited in the General Land Office of the US a certificale of the register of the land office at Mardisville whereby it appears that full playment has been made by the said Samuel Strong." Blake families lived near Samuel.
Samuel and his wife Sarah Morrison, both age 20-29, were enumerated on the 1840 Randolph Co, AL census where he was noted living with 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-9 and 1 female under 5. The family resided near the homes of Jack? T. Morrison and Mcl? Morrison.
In 1850 Samuel was working as a blacksmith and still living in Randolph Co, AL with his wife Sarah and their family which totaled nine. Samuel owned no land and had livestock and grain valued at $150 each. Sarah's brother, William Morrison age 25, lived nearby with his family.
In 1860 Samuel was farming at Rockdale, Randolph Co, AL and his family totaled 8. His wife and daughter were noted as illiterate. Samuel owned $250 in acreage and $250 in personal property. His son William was living next door with his wife Martha. Also living nearby is his father Mastin Strong, age 84 and noted as illiterate, still farming and living with his wife Rebecca. Where Samuel's son John Allen got his middle name is unknown but nearby there are 3 children age 14-7 with the surname Allen living in one of the Luther households. In 1866 Samuel continued to reside in Randolph Co, AL.
In 1867 Samuel and his son Thomas Jefferson Strong were on the list of Cleburne Co, AL voters, so he had moved.
By 1880 Samuel and Sarah were residing in Pine Knot, Cleburne Co, AL with their daughter Sarah and Samuel was still farming. He reported his parents were born in Virginia and Sarah stated her father was born in North Carolina and her mother in Tennessee.
A number of errors are in the census records and the transcriptions: in 1840 Samuel was transcribed as Samuel Wrong and 1860 his wife's age was written down as 66 instead of 48. Some researchers believe Samuel's middle name to be McCormick, but this researcher has not seen proof.
