Father:Daniel Stubbs I (c 1646 - )
Mother:Mary Neast (1649 - )
Charts:Joel Harper Winslett lineage
Thomas Stubbs I was born in 1697 at Worcestershire, England. He was the son of Daniel Stubbs I and Mary Neast. Thomas Stubbs I immigrated c 1712. He married Mary Minor, daughter of John Minor and Esther Ubrum, in Nov 1720 at Old Kennett Friends Meeting House, Goshen, Chester Co, Pennsylvania. Thomas Stubbs I died a 24 Feb 1763 at Concord Township, Delaware Co, Pennsylvania. He was buried at Goshen, Chester Co, Pennsylvania. His estate was probated on 16 Mar 1763 at Chester Co, Pennsylvania.
Thomas Stubbs I was born twelve miles outside the city of Worcestershire, England between Malvern Hill and Clauslawn in the southwest corner of Worcheshire where there is a portion of land partly surrounded by Gloucestershire. One researcher reported he was born 15 Apr 1692. He apparently worked in Bristol for a year and then emigrated in the "Bristol Merchant" about 1712 or 1713 to America.

A Quaker, Thomas was married at the Friends Meeting House in Pennsylvania on either 3 Oct 1720 or some time in Nov 1720.

Thomas was the first Quaker in his line and most of his children strictly followed that faith. In the 1750s Quakerism underwent a reformation and those who did not adhere strictly to the faith were disowned. This new trend took a heavy toll on the Society and barred some members of the Stubbs family. The most common cause for disownment was marrying without the approval of the Friends Monthly Meeting which could take several months to obtain. Other causes included participation in military service, inappropriate conduct, indebtedness, attending a church service and not attending Friends meetings.

Thomas was a miller. He acquired eighty-seven acres in Concord, PA at the forks of the Brandywine Creek, Chester Co, PA where he farmed. Thomas' tract of land near the Susquehanna River was first known as his plantation and later as the Stubbs Homestead. His name appears on Chester Co, PA assessment lists in 1719 in Goshen Township; in 1721 to 1734 in Bradford or West Bradford; in 1747 to 1754 in Embreeville, Newlin Township; and in 1763 in Concord.

In 1732 Thomas Gilpin and his wife Hannah sold 200 acres to Thomas Stubbs for 120 pounds. The deed was not recorded until 1754. Thomas Stubbs and his family apparently moved onto the property in 1756 when they transferred their membership from Bradford Monthly Meeting of Friends to Concord Monthly Meeting. Apparently Thomas added to the original 200 acres and also sold smaller parcels from it. At some point, probably in the late 19th century, part of the Stubbs property was acquired by the county for the construction of an Insane Asylum; later this institution was called the State Hospital and then the Psychiatric Counseling Center.

The Old Stubbs property is located on the road that runs straight west out of Marshallton -- the location of Concord Monthly Meeting and the burial ground where Thomas Stubbs is probably interred -- and is a short distance from the monument marking the place were Mason and Dixon made the astronomical calculations for establishing the Mason-Dixon Line.

There are discrepancies among researchers as to the places and dates of the births, marriages and deaths of Thomas' children. Thomas' descendants migrated to the Carolinas and Georgia because little land was available when they reached the age of majority.

Caroline C. Attmore of Charlotte, NC, the granddaughter of Thomas Stubbs, was interviewed by genealogist Roger Avery Stubbs and provided this data which was transcribed before the original was lost. The essence of the information has already been incorporated in the family biographies. The words below are exact but have been reorganized in paragraphs.

“The first of this family I have had any record of was from the information my mother [Mary] gave, who understood that my grandfather used to say my great great grandfather was a Captain of Horse in the Royal Army, in the war betwixt King Charles I and the Parliament.

My great grandfather, Daniel Stubbs, lived also in England. My grandfather, Thomas Stubbs, I well remember. He lived sometime in Chester Co. In the then Province of Pennsylvania, in the forks of the Brandywine Creek; afterwards removed to the south side of the south fork of Brandywine, in Newlin Township, and finally removed to Concord Township. There he died.

[My grandfather] was born in Worcestershire, in England, within 12 miles of the city of Worcester, between Malvern Hill and Clauslawn [Corse Lawn]. Those are 12 miles apart, a little way from Severn River. It appears my Grandfather was born in the south west corner of Worcestershire, where there is a nook of land partly surrounded by Gloucestershire. There Malvern Hills, Cosse Court and Cosse Wood are laid down. His eldest brother was named David.

[My grandfather] was about 20 or 21 years old when he came over to America. He took shipping at Bristol at a time when there was a cessation of arms in Queen Anne's Wars, in the ship Bristol Merchant, of sixteen guns mounted and had others not mounted. He had hired to work at Bristol about a year. After he had been in Pennsylvania about six years, he married Mary Minor at Goshen in Chester County, about the year 1718, at Friend's Meeting House there.

Thomas Stubbs had in 13 years, nine children born, whose numbers of children in September 1792 were as annexed to their names: 1st Esther had 10 children and 6 children now living; 2d Daniel born 20th or 22nd of 7th Mo 1722 had 14 children and 12 now living; 3d Mary born about 1 3/4 years after 1724 had 3 children and 2 now living; 4th Elizabeth had 6 children and all are alive; 5th Anne (unmarried); 6th Thomas 5, 2, 7 (unsure how to interpret); 7th John 14, 13, 10 (unsure how to interpret); 8th Sarah; 9th Joseph had one child. [Thus] 9 children who had - 45 more; inc. 41 more and 17 more."

In his will Thomas Stubbs, of Concord, in the County of Chester, and Province of Pennsylvania, yeoman, being sick and weary of body but of sound mind and disposing memory ... doe this third day of the eighth month called August and the year of our Lord 1760.... My will is that my executors sell my plantation situate lying and being in Concord aforesaid containing by estimation 87 acres be the same more or less as also my personal estate for the best price that can be got and the money arising from such sale with the residue of my estate of what kind and in whose hands soever it may be found I give and devise to be equally divided between my nine children part and shear alike to wit: Daniel Stubbs, Thomas Stubbs, John Stubbs, Joseph Stubbs, Esther Carson, Mary Attmore, Elizabeth Adams, Ann Stubbs, Sarah Stubbs. Lastly I constitue and appoint my sons Daniel and Joseph Stubbs to be my executors of this my last will and hereby revoking all other wills by me made and testifying and confirming this to be my last will.
his mark Thomas X Stubbs; Witnesses: Robert Mendenhall, William Walter, Henry Myer.
Codicil 25 Feb 1763 with bequeathment to daughter Sarah.
(Chester Co, PA Wills Book I, p. 398)

When Thomas signed his will he did not mention Mary or refer in any way to a "wife," so she was assumed to be dead at this time.

Thomas' land was sold at auction. "To be sold, by public Vendue, on the 27th of this instant June, a Plantation, or Tract of Land, in Concord, Chester County, whereon Thomas Stubbs lately dwelt, containing 87 acres, about 40 thereof cleared, 5 Acres of Meadow, and more may be made, the rest well timbered. Any Person desiring to view the Premises before hand, may apply to Samuel Mendenhall, in said Township, or the Subscribers, who will show the Boundaries thereof. There is on said Premises a good House and Barn, and an Orchard. The Sale to begin at 2 o'Clock on said Day. Daniel Stubbs and Jos. Stubbs, Executors.
