William (Illiam Dhone) Christian1

M, ID# 4216, (14 Apr 1608 - 2 Jan 1661/62)

William (Illiam Dhone) Christian was born on 14 Apr 1608. He was the son of Ewan Christian. William (Illiam Dhone) Christian died on 2 Jan 1661/62 at age 53.
William Christian, a patriot known as Illiam Dh'o'ne or Fair-haired William, had numerous issue. He was a member of the House of Keys and Deemster, or High Judge, during the time of the Stuarts. The Countess of Derby had him arrested and shot because he headed a party which contested some feudal rights claimed by the Earl of Derby when the latter ruled the Isle of Man. The Deemsters were always officers of great dignity and their influence over the people resembled to some degree the civil authority of the ancient Druids whose institutions probably were the original foundations on which the authority of the deemsters was grounded.

John McCrystyn1

M, ID# 4224, (c 1360 - )
John McCrystyn was born c 1360. He was buried at Isle of Man, England.
Originally named Mannin's Isle, the Isle of Man is thirty-three by twelve miles and is an English possession in the Irish Sea between England, Scotland and Ireland. It is shrouded in mists much of the year. Man was annexed by the kingdom of Northumbria in 620. It had its own dialect until the twentieth century. The Manx are generally short and dark with the blonds being of Scandinavian decent. Vikings ruled there for centuries. Two thirds of the surnames begin with C, K or Q which were originally preceded by the Celtic prefix Mac.

The Isle of Man had its own legislature or parliament called Tynwald or Assembly; it consisted of the Legislative Council and the twenty-four member House of Keys in St John's Village. The House of Keys began about the year 900 and granted women equal rights with men about the year 1000. The island has the oldest continual parliamentary system in the world.

Most records previous to 1422 were destroyed and in consequence the Christian pedigree on the Isle of Man cannot be traced further back. The pedigree is registered in the College of Arms, Book VII, D 14, page 170. The name was orginally McCresten and then McCristen; it was changed from the latter in 1600 and the "Mc" was dropped.

One Christian family seat was Unerigg Hall, Cumberland Co, Isle of Man which was comprised of a few dispersed houses. Unerigg is said to have derived its name from Ewan a northern king or chieftain from whom it passed soon after the Norman Conquest to the Ewanriggs, the Multons, the Thwailes and then the McChristian family. The fine mansion was last owned by Henry Tuferman Christian, patron of the vicarage Ellenborough Tomislufe (?). It is one and a half miles east southeast of Maryfiord or Maryfrost near Dearham Parrish. This data was from Mannis and Whellan's "History of Cumberland" and John Britton's "Historical Description of Cumberland." There are also apparently references to the Christians in Hutchinson's "History of Cumberland, England," volume two, page 148 and in Scott's "Pereril of the Peak."

The family uses arms of azura, a chevron humettee, or a demi-mascle between three covered cups; or a crest of a unicorn's head erased, arg, collared and armed or gorged with a collar invicted; and the motto "Salus per Christum" meaning saved by a Christian or a Christian to the rescue. The unicorn is only used where there is royal blood. The family motto of John Christian Curwen is "Si je n'estoy."

The Christian family is a distinguished one which held leadership positions on the Isle of Man until the twentieth century. The family is erroneously noted to have descended from the Dukes of Northumberland and the first Prince of Wales; the first Prince of Wales was Harry of Monmouth and his father was Edward I of England, descendend from the Dukes of Northumberland. In truth, the Christian family was of Norse descent.
