Father:Patrick Francis McCabe (10 Mar 1873 - 1949)
Mother:Anna "Annie" F. Finnegan (c 1874 - 8 Dec 1904)
Charts:Richard Carl Murphy lineage
Joseph 'Joe' Bernard McCabe was born on 25 May 1901 at Cambridge, Massachusetts.4 He was the son of Patrick Francis McCabe and Anna "Annie" F. Finnegan. Joseph 'Joe' Bernard McCabe married Martha Edna Woodworth, daughter of Titus Gilbert Woodworth and Ellen 'Nelly' Ethel Scannell, in 1924 at Somerville, Massachusetts.5,4 Joseph 'Joe' Bernard McCabe died b 1952 at Boston, Massachusetts.5
Joseph Bernard McCabe was age 18 in the 1920 census living with his grandparents, Peter and Margaret McCabe and their son, Joseph's uncle, John J. at 30 York St in Cambridge, MA. The men were all working as chauffers delivering goods.

Joseph married at age 23 and was working as a driver (chauffeur) for a trucking firm and was able to read and write. He reported both his parents were born in the Irish Free States. His daughter Dorothea McCabe Murphy reported he was born in Cambridge, MA; his family was from Pawtucket, RI where he grew up; he did not serve in World War II; and he apparently met her mother at a dance.

Joseph was renting a place to live with his family for $25.00 a month at 6 1/2 Carlisle Street, Cambridge, MA in 1930 when he was age 29; he was still living there when his daughter Dorothea was born at home. In 1930 - 1940 Joseph and his family were living next door to the family of his father Patrick F. McCabe.

Kathleen Murphy Holmes, the sister-in-law of Joseph's daughter Dorothea, lived next door to the Joseph McCabe household from 1941 until 1946 when she was little and never met or heard anything about Joseph.

In the 1941 Cambridge City Directory Joseph and Martha were listed at 6 Carlisle, Cambridge next door to his father Patrick Francis McCabe, and Joseph was listed separately as employed in Boston. That year the 1941 the Boston City Directory included a Jos B McCabe, with no occupation listed, renting at 787 East Broadway, South Boston. By the time the 1946 Cambridge City Directory was published after the war, Martha had moved to 15 Athens St, Cambridge and Joseph was not included in any Cambridge listing. No Joseph B. McCabe was found living in Boston after 1941 although there were many men named Joseph or Bernard living there and two were in the trucking profession. There was a Joseph M McCabe working as a chauffeur in 1941 and living at 28 Concord Chsn; 1942 working as a laborer and 1944 joining the Army. The other man Bernard McCabe with his wife Dorothy was a truck driver living at 101 Falcon in East Boston during 1941-1943 but was not listed under this name and address in 1940.

Of note two other records were found for a Joseph McCabe who was possibly related and who was a decade older than our ancestor. The 1920 census had a Joseph McCabe age 27 in the hospital. His date of birth was consistent with the date of birth for the man in the second record, which is a 5 Jun 1917 draft registration record of a Joseph Bernard McCabe born 24 Aug 1892 in Woodford, Galway, Ireland, England. This man at age 24 was living at 58 Old Heath Street, Boston, MA; with a wife and child dependent on him; and working for J. C. Coleman at Tremond St, Boston MA as part of Teamster 25 registered in Boston, MA.5,6,4,7

Father:Silas Woodworth I (1 May 1843 - 25 Jan 1868)
Mother:Bridget Fleming (22 Sep 1839 - )
Charts:Richard Carl Murphy lineage
Titus Gilbert Woodworth was born on 29 Nov 1865 at New Germany, Lunenburg Co, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of Silas Woodworth I and Bridget Fleming. Titus Gilbert Woodworth immigrated on 25 Mar 1888 to Boston, Massachusetts.5 He married Ellen 'Nelly' Ethel Scannell, daughter of Jeremiah "Jerry" Scannell II and Catherine "Kate" Casey, on 23 Jun 1895 at Somerville, Massachusetts.1,6,5 Titus Gilbert Woodworth was naturalized on 1 Feb 1918 at Boston, Massachusetts. He died on 25 Nov 1936 at Easton, Massachusetts, at age 70.1 He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Massachusetts.
In 1871 at age five Titus Woodworth was residing with his grandparents James Fleming age 70 born in Ireland, a Catholic of Irish heritage, who as farming in New Germany, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, an area near the Atlantic Ocean. Similarly Titus' brothers Milledge and Silas were living at age six and four with two other families.

In the Fleming household in 1871 were James' presumed wife Barbara, age 60, who was a Lutheran born in Nova Scotia of German heritage, their four presumed children ages 11 to 19, and Titus who was enumerated differently as a Lutheran born in Nova Scotia of German origin. Three doors away were John and Margaret Fleming, age 29 and 25 respectively, both born in Nova Scotia of Irish heritage, who also had a 5 year old son. How these two Fleming families were related to Titus' mother Bridget Fleming is unknown, but it is presumed Titus was living with his maternal grandparents.

In 1881 Titus, age 15, still resided in the same location with James Fleming who was now only five years older than the previous census but still enumerated as Catholic of Irish heritage, and three presumed Fleming children, two of whom were on the 1871 census with that family. Titus was now listed as Church of England and of German origins.

Titus Woodworth emigrated from the island portion of Newfoundland or Labrador, Canada and settled in Somerville, MA. He stated on the 1900 census he immigrated in 1888.

When Titus applied and married in Somerville, MA in 1895 there were seven other people surnamed Woodworth marrying in the same four-year time frame in the Somerville - Cambridge area so care needs to be taken in tracing descendant families.

In 1900 Titus was living in Somerville, Middlesex Co, MA with his family and stated his parents were born in Nova Scotia, Canada (English). Key was Titus reported his parents were from the English-speaking part of Nova Scotia as opposed to their being born in England as was incorrectly captured on some subsequent censuses. He worked as a teamster using his own wagon with team of four to six horses to unload ships coming to the Boston area and deliver goods. In 1910 Titus was still living there and working as a distillery teamster.

At the time of the 1920 federal census, Titus was renting a place to live with his family on Porter Street, Boston, MA. His naturalization papers were pending approval. He spoke French and English and was able to read but not able to write. He was working as a wage worker as a teamster for General Trucking company.

By 1930 Titus reported his age as 63. He was renting a farm for $48 a month on Hudson Street, Somerville, MA. He reported he could read and write and spoke English at home before emigrating to the US where he became a naturalized US citizen; that he and his parents were all born Canadian English; he was working as a lunberman in a lumber car.

Titus at age 71 was reported missing on from his Somerville, MA home and a day later was found over 8 miles away in Roxbury, MA according to the 17 Jun 1936 Boston Globe; perhaps he was suffering from dementia. His death was reported in the Boston Globe later that year.1

Peter McCabe1

Charts:Richard Carl Murphy lineage
Peter McCabe was born in Jul 1854 at Ireland. He married Margaret Daley in 1871.2 Peter McCabe immigrated in 1875. He died on 3 Oct 1925 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, at age 71.
Dates for birth, marriage and immigration for Peter McCabe and his wife Margaret in the 1900 census are problematic. Perhaps the 1900 census taker for example could not do math well, thus setting Margaret's marriage date before her birth and her birth within 11 years of the first child on the 1900 census.

Peter and Margaret were likely born and married in County Cavan, Ireland where their son Patrick Francis McCabe was born, and which based on immigration records to Massachusetts appears to have been a stronghold of McCabes. Irish records need to be researched for Patrick Francis' birth record and his parents' marriage record, which would likely yield their parents' names. Note there were many couples named Peter and Margaret McCabe, even the same ages as our ancestors, so care needs to be taken when parsing records in America and Ireland.

Peter became a naturalized US citizen in 1885, the first date he reported for that event on a census. In 1888 Peter was living at 1831 14th Ave in Altoona, PA and working as a laborer according to the Altoona, PA City Directory. There were only five other McCabe listings -- 2 women and 3 men -- in Altoona, so it is not known what attracted Peter to settle there, although it might have been because he or his wife had relatives there. Peter was not in the 1886 Altoona directory and was living in Cambridge, MA by the time the 1890 Altoona directory was published. However, Peter's wife was a Daly and there were two Daily and Daley households in Altoona in 1888, including a Daily household at 1205 14th St with a John with no occupation; Paul M., a clerk; Grace, a music teacher; and Lillian, a student. So Peter may have resettled in Altoona because of his wife Margaret's connections there or the Daileys could have followed him there.

In 1900 Peter was living in Cambridge, MA working as a coal miner. He was literate and continuously reported his parents were born in Ireland on the censuses.

The comprehensive Cambridge, MA city directories were used to track the lives of this close knit McCabe family and their five known sons. The father, sons and grandson were all employed during their lives in the trucking industry, except for Leo, and often lived in the same household together or close to each other throughout their lives. While other directories are available, the following information gives snapshots of their lives.

In the 1914 Cambridge, MA City Directory, Peter and his sons John J. Charles M. and Leo P. were living at 167 Charles Street. Peter and John J. were employed as drivers; Leo P. was a letter carrier and Charles M. as a rubber worker. Patrick F. was living at 322 Vine St and working as a driver.

By 1916 Peter was still working as a driver and was now living at 284 Vine St, near his eldest son Patrick McCabe. Son Leo P. was still working as a letter carrier and son Charles, was now noted as a helper; both were residing with their father. His sons Leo and Charles were living with their parents when they registered in 1917 for the military draft.

In 1919 Peter was working as a driver and residing with his wife Margaret at 284 Vine. Their son Charles M. was working as a helper and living with them and their son Leo P. was working as a letter carrier and residing with them. Son James I. was working as a driver and living with his wife Celia at 69 Bristol and son Patrick F. was a driver living with his wife Mary at 322 Vine.

In 1920 Peter was a driver living at 8 Marney St with his wife Margaret and sons Charles M., working as an operator, and Leo P. who was carrying mail. Peter's son James was enumerated as James O. McCabe, a driver, residing at 106 Trowbridge St on the census and as James I in the city directory. Patrick F. was working as a driver and living at 507 Massachusetts Ave with his wife Mary.

In the 1923 Cambridge, MA City Directory, Peter, a laborer, and his wife Margaret were residing at 30 York St along with their son John J. and his second wife Esther, and their grandson Joseph B; both John and Joseph were employed as chauffeurs. James and Margaret's son Leo was listed as a post office carrier living at 17 Marie Ave. Patrick F., a chauffeur, was residing at 6 1/2 Carlisle with his wife Mary. A chauffeur was a teamster who drove a wagon to deliver supplies. By 1925 John J., Joseph, Leo, Peter and Patrick were working in the same employment and living at the same addresses.

The 1926 directory listed Peter as deceased on 3 Oct 1925 and a Mrs. Margaret McCabe deceased on 22 Aug 1925, who was Peter's wife because Margaret was never listed as a widow of Peter. Joseph B. continued to reside at 30 York St and work as a chauffer and Leo had the same employment and residence. John J. was a chauffeur at 418 Main St and resided with Esther at 14 Carlisle, near Patrick and Mary's residence at 6 1/2 Carlisle.

By 1930 Patrick F. and his son Joseph B. were both living at 6 1/2 Carlisle St with their families and they were still living there in 1940.

In 1931 Peter's son Charles M. was also living at the 30 York address with his wife Helen T. and was employed as a chauffeur. John J. still had the same place of employment but he and Esther resided at 31 Magnolia Ave. Leo was listed the same way but now his wife Ellen's name was included. Patrick and Mary remained with the same listing.

The 1937 Cambridge, MA City Directory showed just two brothers: Charles M. still working as a driver and living at 30 York St with his wife Helen T. and Patrick whose listing showed no wife or employment but was still residing at 6 1/2 Carlisle with his daughter Rita G. who was working at Carter's Ink Co. Patrick's son Joseph B. was employed in Boston and listed at 6 1/2 Carlisle with his wife Martha E. who was employed at the F. L. Daggett Company.

Margaret Daley1

F, ID# 6687, (Jun 1858 - 22 Aug 1925)
Charts:Richard Carl Murphy lineage
Margaret Daley was born in Jun 1858 at Ireland.2 She married Peter McCabe in 1871.2 Margaret Daley immigrated on 22 Apr 1882 to New York, New York. She died on 22 Aug 1925 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, at age 67.
In the 1900 census Peter and Margaret stated they were married 29 years and he immigrated in 1875 and she immigrated in 1882. The document believed to be Margaret McCabe's 1882 immigration record showed her traveling from Queenstown, Ireland on the ship Celtic and listed her as Margaret McCabe, 25, spinster. Her immigration age was used to establish her birth date because the immigration date matches the 1900 census immigration date.

Thus Peter and Margaret were married in Ireland as their information on the 1900 census implies, given the number of years they stated they were married. Margaret married Peter when she was about 17 in 1871, as they reported, before he immigrated in 1875 and then she followed him to America seven years later. Given that Margaret and Peter lived together for about four years in Ireland it is likely they had more than children than their known son in Ireland.

Margaret reported she could not read or write in 1920 and that she became a naturalized US citizen in 1885. She reported both of her parents were born in Ireland.2
