Charts:Susan Paulding Ruff * lineage
Hanss Johann Henrich Muehlschlaegel was born in Apr 1684 at Lachen-Speyerdorf, Palatinate, Bayern, Germany. He was christened on 20 Apr 1684 at Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche, Lachen-Speyerdorf, Palatinate, Bayern, Germany. He was the son of Hans Jacob Muehlschlaegel and Anna Margretha (Unknown). Hanss Johann Henrich Muehlschlaegel married Maria Apolonia Hamman, daughter of Peter Hamman (the Younger) and Anna Maria Mueller, on 7 Sep 1707 at Lachen-Speyerdorf, Palatinate, Bayern.2 Hanss Johann Henrich Muehlschlaegel died on 2 Jan 1735 at Lachen, Palatinate, Bayern, Germany, at age 50.2
The church where Hanss Henrich Muehlschlagel was christened, confirmed and married was located in Standesant Neustadt in Rheinland-Pfalz. His godfather was Hans Henrich Leich, a baker and Gemeinsmann at St. Lamprecht, Germany. As a community group, the Bürger would have made up the Gemeinde or community. This Gemeinde, under the leadership of elected village elders, made important decisions on behalf of the community: which fields to leave fallow, what crops to plant in which fields, and what community projects to undertake such as rebuilding roads. Members of the Gemeinde were allowed to share in common village assets such as the meadows, pastures and woodlands.

Hans Heinrich was confirmed in 1698 at the same Lachen-Speydorf Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche. As an adult, he was schoolmaster of Lachen-Speyerdorf. He generally used the name Hans Heinrich in records but was also noted as Herr (Mr.) Johann Heinrich Muehschlagel in several records.

How their youngest child, our ancestor Johann Andreas, survived in this household is somewhat of a mystery. Hans Jacob and his wife Maria Apolonia had ten children. Their youngest children had extraordinarily poor survival rates compared to most of our known ancestral lines. All five children born immediately before our ancestor Johann Andreas died before age seven in 1718, 1721, 1725, 1729 and 1731, and two other children may have also died young. The deaths were not grouped as if related to disease outbreaks, and crop failures did not hit Lachen-Speyerdorf until the second half of the 1700s. Perhaps one of his two older sisters cared for Johann Andreas or took him with them when they married and left home while he was still a baby. Luckily Johann Andreas was a survivor!

According to their son Hans Adam's christening information, Jacob and Anna Margretha Mühlschlägel were from "Altorf;" Altdorf can be translated as the old village, a portion of Lachen-Speyerdorf where Hans Jabob was born, married, worked and had other children.

Jacob worked as a schoolmaster in Lachen-Speyerdorf which is located in the southeast corner of the Palatinate. Lachen-Speyerdorf is about 3 miles from Neustadt where his first child was born and about 4.7 miles from Haardt where another child was born. Lachen and Speyerdorf are two villages about fifteen miles west of the city of Speyer on the Rhine River in the German Palatinate. Although they were two distinct villages, they maintained one set of church records from the beginning and both villages are now part of the eastern suburbs of the city of Neustadt.
