Robert Slocomb I was born c 1662.1 He married Sarah Riley, daughter of Thomas Riley / O'Rily I and Sarah Webb, c 1700 at Accomack Co, Virginia.1 Robert Slocomb I died b 17 Feb 1722 at Accomack Co, Virginia. His estate was probated on 24 Feb 1741 at Accomack Co, Virginia.1
Robert Slocomb I was frequently noted in Accomack County, VAcourt records which included his name as Slokeam, Slockum, Slocom, Slocome and Slocombe. Robert was in court in regard to leasing or leasing out land and was himself several times the target of lawsuits, which he usually lost. As a result on one of the lawsuits Robert chose Henry Custis to audit the accounts on his behalf.

On 2 Mar 1707/08 in Accomack Co Court, Obedience Pittman, planter, acknowledged a lease he made to Robert Slokeam of 57 acres lying at the head of Guilford Creek, Accomack Co, VA for 2,261 lbs tobacco to include all rights, housing, fencing, orchards, pasture or any other profit or convenience thereto belonging for 19 years. Robert apparently sublet the land the following year on 2 Feb 1708/09 to James Macoom / Mason.

On 2 Jun 1708 in Accomack Co Court, Thomas Simpson (assignee of Robert Slocum) brought action against Richard Jones for 300 lbs tobacco. Although the sheriff had left a summons, Jones failed to appear and the court granted an attachment against Jones' estate for the debt and court costs.

On 2 Aug 1710 in Accomack Co Court, James and Sarah Lewis obtained from justice Capt. Bradhurst a warrent against Robert Slocum, who had borrowed their saddle and saddle cloth. After they swore to the itmes, Maj. George Parker gave a judgment ordering Slocum to return the saddle and saddle cloth. Slocum appealed the judgment the second day of the court, which debated the matter and confirmed Parker's judgment and ordered Slocum to pay court costs. On 6 Sep 1710 the suit of Robert Slocum against George Parker was referred to the next court.

On 18 Sep 1710 James Lewis complained to John Bradhurst that Robert Slocumb borrowed a new man's saddle from James' wife "in the time of her widowhood about October last past and that he refused to returne the same." Bradhurst issued a precept to Constable John Barnes Jr to arrest Slocumb and bring him before a justice. Signed 17 July 1710 by John Bradhurst. The order was executed by Barnes. On 25 July 1710, Robert Slocum came before Geo. Parker to answer the above complaint; Sarah, the wife of James Lewis, swore that the saddle was her own and that she lent it to Robert Slocum with a saddle cloth. Parker ordered Slocum to return the items. Robert Slocum appealed to the second day of the next court. On 6 Dec 1710 Mathias Cope petitioned the court to be paid for serving as a witness for Robert Slocum in his suit against George Parker senior. Because Cope swore he served 5 days, it was ordered that he be paid 200 lbs tobacco and court costs.

Robert bought 100 acres of Whitelaw's tract A137 near the present town of Mappsville, Accomack Co, VA in 1714 from Thomas Jester of Kent County, DE. In his will Robert left this land to his son Ryley. In 1743, two years after Robert's estate was settled, Ryley and his brother Thomas sold the land to William Andrews; Andrews deeded the land back to Ryley alone the next year. In 1744 Charles Stockley sold John Walker an unspecified acreage, saying the land was sold to him by Robert and Rebecca Slocomb by a General Court deed.

On 2 Nov 1714 in Accomack County Court, by virtue of a power of attorney made to him by Thomas Jester and his wife Sarah, Samuell Jester presented and acknowledged both a deed for land Thomas and his wife sold to Robert Slocumb and Sarah's relinquishment of dower.

On 7 Jun 1715 in Accomack Co Court, Benjamin Coe brought an action for 630 lbs tobacco against Robert Slocum, who failed to appear. On 5 Jul 1715 Slocumb presented as his special bail Mr. Edward Robins, who would have to answer for the debt and cost if Slocum lost. On 6 Sep 1715 Slocumb failed to appear and at the request of Coe's attorney, judgment would be affirmed against Slocum (and Mr. Edward Robins, his bail) if Slocumb failed to appear at the next court. On 4 Oct 1715 Slocumb's attorney Mr. Kempe asked auditors be appointed to audit the accounts between the two parties. Coe chose Henry Bagwell as auditor, and Slocumb selected Henry Custis. The court ordered these two men go over the accounts and report to the next court. On 6 Dec 1715 Henry Custis, "was afflicted wth sickness," so the audit was not complete. On 3 Jan 1715/16 Slocumb failed to appear; further the auditors reported that though Coe appeared on the appointed day, Slocumb did not. On 6 Mar 1715/16 regarding the Benjamin Coe action for 630 lbs tobacco against Robert Slocumb, who alleged no discount, it was ordered that Slocomb immediately pay the debt and the costs of the suit.

On 6 Nov 1717 in Accomack Co Court, John Hutchinson went before justice John Boadhurst and complained he was "in fear of his life or sum bodyly harm to be don unto him" at the hands of Robert Slocumb. Bound to keep the peace and appear at this court, Slocumb appeared, but no one came to allege anything against him. The court ordered he pay court costs and be discharged.

Robert's 6 Mar 1719 a will noted: eldest son Thomas Slocomb; youngest son Ryley Slocomb his land; balance of estate to be divided among children. Richard Grinalds to keep daughter Sarah untll she is 16. Francis Young to have the care of son Bennitt until he was 21. Brother (meaning brother-in-law) Thomas Ryley executor; Wittnesses: Thomas Ryley, Richard Sanders, Edward Brotherton.

Settlement of Robert's estate dragged on for almost exactly two decades. Between 25 Feb and 24 Mar 1735/36 in the vincinty of Chesconessex, the line between William Hudson & the heirs of Robert Slocome was processioned by Joseph Bell and about 15 others.

Thomas Slocomb I was born c 1702 at Accomack Co, Virginia. He was the son of Robert Slocomb I and Sarah Riley.1
Thomas Slocomb was named as administrator of his father's estate on 7 Apr 1724 in Accomack Co, VA when Robert Slocomb's estate was administered by his son and heir Thomas Slocomb. Mason Abbott & John Wilkins were securities. (Note: Robert had named his brother Thomas Riley as his executor in his will of 1718, but Thomas Riley died before he could settle his brother's estate and named a cousin Ryley Slocomb (under age 15) in his 1721 will probated in 1724. The assumption is by 1724 Robert's eldest son and heir-at-law Thomas Slocomb had come of age and so his father's unsettled estate was administerd by him.

On 8 Jul 1724 in Accomack Co Court, Thomas petitioned that during his lifetime his father left different goods and chattels in the hands of Tho. Lucas, Nathaniel Howard, George Middleton and Sarah Riley (widow and executrix of Tho. Riley), all of whom now refused to deliver the items to Thomas. The sherriff was ordered to summon the above persons to the next court to show why they did not deliver the goods in question.

On 21 Mar 1727 in Accomack Co, William Taylor, Joshua Taylor, Thos: Slocomb, Richard Townsend and Jno Mathews processioned the lands from Solomon Ewells Mill to Gingoteague Creek from the Sea Side to Wallops Road. This included the lines between Joshua Taylor & Wm. Taylor, and between Wm. Taylor & Eliz. Preson, and between Preson & James Wishart, and between James Wishart & William Whittington.

Thomas sold land in Feb 1743 in Accomack Co, VA. In his will of 1718 Robert left his plantation and land where he lived to his son Ryley. In 1743, two years after Robert's estate was finally settled, the sons Thomas and Ryley united in a deed to William Andrews for the land "where Robert Slocumb the elder formerly lived." More specifically: On 29 Feb 1743 Thomas Slocomb and his brother Riley Slocomb of Accomack Co, VA sold William Andrews for 15 pounds Virginia currency 100 acres in Accomack Co, VA near the head of the Messongo Branch, being the land and plantation where their father Robert Slocomb had lived. Signed by Thomas & Riley Slocomb, their seal, in the presence of William Arbuckle, George Douglas and Robert Slocomb.

Robert Slocomb II used "S.S." after his signature to stand for Sea Side, implying there was another Robert Slocomb in Accomack Co, VA probably on the Bay Side. Another possibility is because his father lived on the Bay Side at the head of Guilford Creek, Robert II always used the "S.S." to distinguish himself from this father and continued to use it after his father's death.
