     Johann Henchin Cuntze was born a 1500 at Niederndorf, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. He died a 1570.
      Johann Henchin Cuntze was a judge who lived in Oberfischbach, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Johann Henchin was associate justice of the District Court and leased land at Niederndorf that belonged to the noble family von Bicken. He was reportedly married to W. O. (last name unknown.)

The area of Nordrhein-Westfalen, a mining and industrial center in Germany, was almost completely demolished during World War II. The impact on genealogical research is that many of the well-documented German church records for that region were destroyed. The particular effect on Counts family research is there are few primary source documents to prove the lineage. Most unique online family information is likely based on family bibles and records handed down in within families. Benjamin Holtzclaw's Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immgrants to Virginia 1714-1750 published in 1964, which documents the arrival in American of our ancestor Johann Jost Cuntze (1674-1731), is another source on which many researchers relied. However, most online trees are simply copies of other trees, some of which are clearly incorrect. This researcher has not seen any primary records that verify the accuracy of the family lineage prior to arrival of the Counts family in America.

A considerable amount of research is available on the Cuntze family because two immigrants, with similar names, settled in the first two German settlements in Virginia. The first ancestor in our line with these documented primary records is Johann Jost Cuntze (1674-1731). The male lines of the Cuntze immigrants to America appear to have proliferated with volumious and conflicting data available online. Traditional reuse of family saint and given names both among and within generations has caused some researchers to confuse ancestors and therefore some seemingly valid online family trees are inaccurate.

Variance exists among online family information as to the birth, marriage and death places for the Cuntze ancestors in Germany. However research showed the mountain villiages prominent in the Cuntze family – Ferndorf, Kreutzal, Muesen, Niederndorf, Oberfischbach, Siegen, Trupbach and Wilden – are located within an approximate 30 square mile triangle in Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, with the village of Siegen near the center of this triangle:
--Ferndorf is ~6 miles north of Siegen and ~2.5 miles southeast of Muesen;
--Kreutzal is ~5 miles north of Siegen and ~2.5 miles west of Muesen;
--Muesen is ~6.5 miles northeast of Seigen;
--Niederndorf and Oberfischbach are contiguous constituent communities of Freudenberg and are ~7 miles northwest of Siegen and ~11 miles southwest of Muesen;
--Trupbach is ~1 mile east of Seigen; and
--Wilden, a constituent community of Wilnsdorf, is ~6 miles southeast of Siegen.
Siegen and Freudenberg lie on the the Orange Route, the German-Dutch road which ran through the German state of NordRhein-Westfalen and joined towns, cities and regions associated with the House of Orange-Nassau. Musen is an ancient mining area dating to the Celtic period. Niederndorf is a quaint little village that is part of the medieval town of Freudenburg. Five miles from Niederndorf is the village of Oberfischbach (Upper Fish Creek) which is the parish center for the area and has the church that the Cuntze family used since Niederndorf had no church. The church at Siegen was also used for family ceremonies.

Thus when researchers vary as to the key places in a Counts ancestor's life, the district and state of Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen have been listed instead of using the small village names. Also important to note is Muesen, Niederndorf and Oberfischbach were originally part of the principality of Nassau-Siegen from 1606 until 1743, which is now called as Siegen-Wittgenstein; for continutity these three villages have been noted using the modern geographical terms. A discussion of the innumerable spellings of the surname is included in the immigrant Jost Joseph Countze's biography.
