William Satchell1,2,3

M, ID# 2151, (1613 - 1679)
Charts:John Satchell Martin * lineage
William Satchell was born in 1613 at England. He immigrated in 1635 to Virginia. He married (possible 1st wife of Wm Satchell ) (Unknown) c 1650. William Satchell died in 1679 at Northampton Co, Virginia. His estate was probated in Mar 1678/79 at Northampton Co, Virginia.
William Satchell took the oath of allegiance and supremacy before immigrating to Virginia 7 Aug 1635 on the Globe of London piloted by Jeremy Blackman, master.

No Virginia land patents for William have been found nor was his name ever used in Accomack or Northampton counties in Virginia to acquire a headright of land. However William was noted as a planter. In 1651 William deeded by gift 100 acres land to Mary Beedle, daughter of Richard and Anne Beedle. He bought land in 1652 at tract N52, Matchipungo, Northampton Co, VA seaboard side. That year William Stone sold 200 acres of tract N52 to William Satchell beginning from the south side of Scotts quarter branch at the dwelling house of the said William Satchell and so extending southerly. In 1657 he acquired another 100 acres in tract N52 Matchipungo, Northampton Co seaboard land from William Whittington. William Satchell also apparently sold our ancestor William Kendall I land known as Pond Island and part of Scotch Quarter.

William's son John was born in 1651 and his daughter Alice in 1653. Although William clearly had a relationship with the Beedle household at that time, this researcher questions whether Ann Beedle is John and Alice's mother given that the church did not take William or Ann to court for adultry, fornication and bastardy until a decade later after the birth of William and Ann's daughter Grace. With William's character, he likely had a first marriage or mistress before Anne Beedle aligned with him when William was age 38. After quoting William's will, genealogist Mark Lewis noted in a letter to Ella Virginia August Perry: "...names no wife, but it appears that he married twice. In 1665 his wife was Anne, who probably was the mother of Ellen, his youngest child. John and Grace were by an unknown first wife." Lewis does not explain why he concluded there were two wives or John and Grace were by the same mother.

William was not the best of character; he was continuously in court for various issues. From 1662 through 1663 he was in court for numerous issues related to fathering a child with Anne Beadle who was reported by some to be married to Richard Beadle and who along with Mary Beadle was apparently living in William Satchell's home.

William was a defendant in a court case on 2 Mar 1662/63 at Northampton Co: Reference is granted to Wm Satchell in the difference depending between him & Jno. Coale till the next Court, and then the said Satchell to answer the suit of the said Coale.

In accordance with the times, William was presented in court for fornication on 23 Mar 1662/63 at Northampton Co. Whereas it appears to the Court that William Satchell hath committed the sin of fornication with Anne Beadle; it's therefore ordered that he be fined 500 lbs tobacco to the use of the Parish and be imprisoned until he enter into bond with security for good behaviour, and also to keep the child and save the Parish harmless & pay court charges. This child was likely daughter Grace.

Anne Beedle was presented for adultry on 28 Apr 1663 at Northampton Co, VA: Whereas Anne Beadle was formerly presented to the Court by Mr. Thomas Ryding, Church Warden, for the sin of Adultry and this day the said Anne Beadle personally appeared to answer the charges, alledging that she had no husband living, but not appearing to the Court by positive proof for the present that she hath a husband the layeth claim to her. The Court at this instance have suspended their judgment until the next Court held in this County, in which time she is to procure certificate from Gloucester County or else an acknowledgment from the Records of the said Court by the subscription of Richard Beadle her reputed husband that he layth no claim to the said Anne Beadle his supposed wife.... As a result of this court action Richard Beetle's statement was recorded in court records on 22 Apr 1663 at Northampton Co. Be it known unto all men by these presents that whereas it is reported that there is a woman called by the name of Ann Beadle living in Northampton at William Satchels and also reported that the said Anne Beadle is my wife, I, Richard Beadle, do here declare that I never had any such woman to be wife in Northampton County and furthmore I do here declare & subscribe to the same that I, Richard Beadle, do renounce & disclaim any right or title to the Anne Beadle that lives with Wm. Satchel as in relation to my wife. These being the real truth I have hereunto subscribed my hand and set to my seal this 22 Apr 1663. Signed by the mark of Rich: Beadle. Wittnesses: Jno. Savage & Samuel Shambrook. Recorded 1 May 1663 by Robt. Hutchinson, Clerk of Northampton Court. Mr. John Savage made oath in open Court on 28 Nov 1664 that the within written was subscribed by the mark of Richard Beadle and was recorded on 8 Apr 1665 by Will Melling, Clerk of Northampton Court.

William was named in a statement recorded in court records on 28 Oct 1663 at Northampton Co. It was on this date that John Coale made oath that a note from him was sent to Wm. Satchell by Richard Adams, the original signed with the mark of said Adams. Recorded on 28 Nov 1663 by Robt Hutchinson, Clerk of Northampton Court. The note read as follows: Wm. Stachel, my kind love & best respects, I present to you. this is to desire you to have a special care that you do not marry to Nan Beadle, wife of Richard Beadle, of certain he is her lawful husband and he is living in Gloster County. I rest from Richard Adams his fellow servant dated at New Pecoson River 17 Sep 1663.

William named someone to be security on his bond on 29 Oct 1663 at Northampton Co. Whereas John Cole was security for William Satchell and desiring to be released from the same, the said Wm. Satchell tendered Jno. Vines & Richard Clark with their consents as security which the Court accepts. Also on this same date John Cole was security for Anne Beadle & desiring to be released, the said Beadle tendered John Vines & Rich: Clark with their consents as security which the Court accepts.

William was named in a deposition on 31 Oct 1663 at Northampton Co. Wm. Mellinge deposed in open Court that being at the house of William Satchell with John Cole, there was some difference between Mary Beadle & Jno Cole concerning certain things which she had of the said Jno Cole in the time they were made some together, which your deponent was in evidence unto but waiting an hour or two on horse back for the said John Cole, who demanded & required such things of the said Mary Beadle (she proving herself false as he said) as she had of him and he being very urgent for the things, your deponent being on horse back in the yard staying for the said Cole, heard Anne Beadle, mother of the said Mary Beadle, tell John Cole he should not have the things now, but he should have them another time, or the value thereof in tobacco.

On this same date of 31 Oct 1663 Mrs. Anne Mellinge, age about 45 years, deposed in open Court that upon a time she & Frances Waterson & Joane Griffeth were at the house of Wm Stachell with John Cole and your deponent went into a little hoggs house, were they dress their pvision, where Wm Stachell's woman servant and your said Cole were, and your depoent heard the said servant woman confess to the deponent that Mary Beadle had two hoods & one round scarf and one long scarf unhemed, with a small scaine of black silk to hem the said long scarf, but told your deponent the long scarf was not then hemmed. Upon another time your deponent went with her husband & John Cole to Wm Satchell's house again and the said John Cole demanded the above said things, and then Anne Beadle and her daughter Mary Beadle both of them denied they ever had any things of the said Coles, only three ells of fine Holland, that they delivered them again. Then the said Cole went out of the house and called the woman servant before them to justify the same so they having all many words the said Cole said he never gave any thing to her but upon the account she was sure to him. Then Mary Beadle replied to the said Cole that if she had thought he gave them to her upon the intent that she would never received them of the said Cole; whereupon Wm Satchell hearing Mary Beadle confess that she received the same things said hastily to her hold you tongue you Jade, and get you of the house to work.

William was presented for fornication on 28 Dec 1663 at Northampton Co, VA: whereas William Satchell, formerly entered into bond for good behavior and this day petitioned the Court to be discharged, whereupon proclamation was 3 times made in open Court, and no objection against him, it is therefore ordered that he have his bond delivered up paying Court charges. On the same date, Anne Beadle was found guilty of the sin of fornication and she shall pay 500 lbs tobacco and the sheriff to take security for her good behavior and she to pay all costs of the suit.

In his Jan 1679 will proved in Mar 1679, William Satchell bequeathed his daughter Ellen 100 acres of seaboard Northampton Co land on the south side of Scotch Quarter Branch, daughter Grace an adjoining 100 acres, and son John all lands on the north side of Scotch Quarter Branch. "To daughter Ellen my mill. To my son Ju? Satchell my gun. Wittnesses: Humphry 'HR' Reade, William Robinson.

John Satchell I is likely not the son of William's mistress Ann but was likely the son of an earlier mistress or wife.

John inherited land in 1680 at Northampton Co, VA when his father William Satchell left him 300 acres as follows: 100 acres each to his son John, and daughters Grace and Ellen. John received the land on the north side of the branch.
