Thomas Lanphier I1,2,3,4,5,6,7

M, ID# 5710, (a 1665 - Aug 1731)
Charts:John Satchell Martin * lineage
Thomas Lanphier I was born a 1665. He married Elizabeth Kyle c 1690.3 Thomas Lanphier I died in Aug 1731 at Curragheen, Co Tipperary, Munster, Irish Republic. His estate was probated in 1733 at Ireland. He was buried at Parkstowne, Co Tipperary, Munster, Irish Republic.
Thomas Lanphier farmed in Ireland and he was a clothier. His name is interchanged in official documents of his era as Lamphier, Lanphier and Lanphire. In 1701 Thomas Lanphier rented from Anthony Meade for 500 years starting at 102 pounds per year, 381 acres of profitable Parkstowne land, 365 acres of profitable Curragheen land, and 117 acres of unprofitable Barony of Eliogurty and Ikerin, County Tipperary land for seven years. In 1722 he was released from this land indenture. Thomas' will was probated in the Cashel and Emly diocese in southern Ireland.

There is no proof of the following family tradition. The unknown progenitor of the Lanphier family is said to have come from Languedoc and Marseille in southern France in 1572, although all Lanphier families in America point to this same published and oft-quoted family tradition. Languedoc, a Huguenot stronghold, was a historical region in south central France on the Mediterranean Sea; unity was based only on a common language until the 1200s when it was ruled by the Counts of Toulouse. From the 1500s to the 1700s Languedoc was the scene of Protestant persecutions. The Lanphiers were probably among the many Huguenot, or French Protestant, cloth workers. The progenitor likely fled from his native French land after the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day on 24 Aug 1572. Sixty thousand Protestants were supposedly massacred in different parts of France, instigated by the hellish bigotry of Charles IX who instead of being the protection of his subjects gave orders for their wholesale murder. This happened during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and, to her honor, she protected and offered succor and asylum to Protestant refugees from every land; her firmness, wisdom, and discretion was instrumental in perpetuating the Protestant cause.

Unwilling to change their beliefs and possessing portable livelihoods, the Lanphiers fled to Wiltshire Co, England where they remained for three generations. Then during English King James I's reign, acts were passed denying the Huguenots some privileges. William Cromwell's assault on Ireland brought new opportunities. In 1650, seventy-eight years after the French Lanphier left France for England, a descendant of this Lanphier it is said immigrated to Ireland, joined the army and was engaged in the Cromwell's wars waged between Catholics and Protestants in that country. The Lanphier descendant went to County Cork, Ireland and married into the Going family. Where they lived in County Cork is unknown but the names Guin and Lampriere are in the church registers of St. Mary's in Youghal as well as on list of Youghal freeman. About 1688 a relative of this descendant, Colonel James Going, Colonel of Cavalry, fought under William and Mary against James and had twenty-four sons in the same regiment with him. Colonel Going in his sleep used to dream of being engaged with the enemy and would wake himself striking the wall with his fists.
