Robert Christian was one of about fifteen children. He was the father of Letitia Christian who married President John Tyler. Robert owned the home "Cedar Grove" in New Kent Co, Va. It is the oldest of the remaining conspicuous Tidewater estates in the county; a drawing of the home was used by our ancestor Ella Virginia Auguste Perry for her bookplate. Cedar Grove is located midway between Mountcastle and Roxbury, Va and has an irregular architecture. It is a center hall brick colonial with much intact original architecture. In 1993 the incumbent renters were trying to restore as much of the architecture as possible. Behind the house in a field is a small, brick-fenced family burial ground with numerous Christians and Tylers, to whom we are not directly related, buried; some stones are now missing. There are other Christian homes in Charles City Co and in Providence Forge, Va.

John or Thomas ? Stanley1,2,3

M, ID# 5749, (a 1706 - )
Charts:Oma Lavinia Strong lineage
John or Thomas ? Stanley was born a 1706.
Work on Anne Stanley's father remains underway while searching for additional records. An excellent reesearcher, Robert Strong of Madison, AL, believed John's father and grandfather were both Thomas Stanleys and that the records noted below may be of the grandfather. The grandfather Thomas' death was recorded in Bruton Church, Williamsburg, VA before 1710. The father Thomas died much later in Hanover Co, VA.

Stanleys were in Charles City Co, VA in the 1670s through 1680s, but it is unknown if they were related to this line. Of consequence, the Stanleys in these Charles City Co records were not noted as being Quakers, whereas our Stanley ancestors were Quakers and other county families occasionally were noted as Quakers. There was a Thomas Stanley who appeared in Charles City Co, VA court orders in 1673. In 1677 a John Stanley was imported into Charles City Co, VA by another citizen. In 1679 a Thomas Stanley was imprisoned for 44 days in Charles City Co, and the same year he was in court for debt. In 1689 a Thomas Stanley was mentioned in court, but it was unclear if he was deceased or not.

Another possible father for Anne Stanley was John Stanley, a member of the Cedar Creek Friends Meeting, and his wife Alice Ballard, daughter of William Ballard 1682-1754 and his wife Philadelphia Lee 1682-1754. He owned a couple of parcels of land adjacent to Col John Chiswell, a merchant. The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. Vol. VI: Virginia, (http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=48135&pageno=268) mentions Thomas Stanley, John Stanley, and Ann Stanley. Entries confirm that a John Stanley married a woman surnamed Ballard, but her name was Ann, not Alice. The Ballard Family were also included in this volume. Online trees note John's parents were Thomas Horton Stanley 1670-1714 and Mary Holme 1666-1720; said Thomas was the son of Edward Stanley 1643-1671 and Elizabeth Bosville 1645-1719 and that said Mary Holme was noted as the daughter of Jonathan Holme 1634-1713 and Sarah Borden. More data is available on these Stanley and Ballard lines if the Robert T. Strong's hypothesis regarding Anne Stanley's father being a Thomas Stanley is proven incorrect. (Thomas E. Galloway, ancestry.com tree, http://person.ancestry.com/tree/9923943/person/6010427653/facts).

A third and less likely set of potential parents for Ann are John Stanley who first married Martha Hutchins and secondly married Ann's mother. Obviously these two Johns are not exclusive, but this poster continues by noting Ann and Martin Strong's children as John, William, Dolly, Sarah, Betsy and Thomas; this is incongruent with Robert T. Strong's careful research as to who the Martin and Ann Strong children were. (http://bransoncook.systemaxonline.com/gedcoms/stanley/pafg01.htm#5127.)

John Strong I1,2

M, ID# 5750, (c 1666 - a 1702/3)
Father:Thomas Strong (c 1601 - )
Charts:Oma Lavinia Strong lineage
John Strong I was born c 1666 at England ? He was the son of Thomas Strong. John Strong I married Mary Martha Sherwood c 1697. John Strong I died a 1702/3. He was buried at Saint Peter's Parish, New Kent Co, Virginia.
This John Strong is thought to be the progenitor of the Strong line in America. There is conjecture, but no proof, that John was the son of Thomas, born circa 1601 in England from Robert Strong of Madison, AL. Other sources postulate John was the son of William Strong born 1605 in Chard, Somerset, England and died 1683 in Kent, England and that John had siblings Ann and Elizabeth; if this theory is proved correct there is additional data about William and his father William online (http://person.ancestry.com/tree/9923943/person/6010446536/facts).

John was probably born in England before 1667 and probably immigrated before 1682. He resided between 1698 and 1703 in St. Peter's Parish, which was probably the portion of the parish that was in New Kent Co, VA. He was noted as in the records of St Peter's Parish, when his children were christened there between 1698 and 1703. He died in either New Kent Co, VA or Hanover Co, VA or possibly was the John Strong who died testate in Essex Co, VA in 1718 whose will was probated 18 Sep 1718 and noted his wife Martha, son George and personal property to be divided among his four children.

John was probably the same John Strong who was claimed as a headright by Robert Hughes senior of New Kent Co, VA, and he may be the John Strong claimed as a headright by Robert Woodson senior of Henrico Co, VA. He may be the same John Strong who departed Bristol, England in 1672 to serve an apprenticeship in Virginia.

John Strong II1

M, ID# 5751, (1698 - Sep 1751)
Father:John Strong I (c 1666 - a 1702/3)
Mother:Mary Martha Sherwood (1675 - 1703)
Charts:Oma Lavinia Strong lineage
John Strong II was born in 1698 at Saint Peter's Parish, New Kent Co, Virginia. He was the son of John Strong I and Mary Martha Sherwood. John Strong II was christened on 13 Nov 1698 at Saint Peter's Church, New Kent Co, Virginia. He married Mary Elizabeth Martin ? c 1730. John Strong II died in Sep 1751 at St Martin's Parish, Hanover Co, Virginia.
John Strong II lived in St Martin's Parish, Hanover Co, VA. Based on purchase accounts, the John Strong family lived near Chiswell's Store, which was on land adjacent to that owned by John Stanley. John Stanley was noted as one of the possible men who is the father of Anne who married Martin Strong (c1732-c1781), son of John Strong II.

John Strong II was born before 24 NOV 1698, when he was christened in St. Peter's Parish. His parents probably resided in the part of the parish that was located in New Kent County, Virginia. Nothing is known of the life of John Strong, Jr. A person named John Strong died before 1752 (1751 or earlier) in western Hanover County, Virginia, which was in St. Martin's Parish of the Church of England. This was proved by the store accounts of "Colonel" John Chiswell, who owned land adjacent to John Stanley, "the eldest", father of Ann Stanley Strong. Records in the store account, dated 1751 and later, refer to "the estate of John Strong". Martin Strong was one of the persons who made purchases that were charged to the estate of John Strong. This establishes that Martin Strong and Ann Stanley probably resided in the same neighborhood shortly prior to Ann's marriage to a Mr. Strong about late 1753. [Col. Chiswell owned "Scotchtown," later acquired by Patrick Henry, 2nd, and now a national monument.] John Strong's widow was probably Mary Strong, whose records begin in the 1750s and continue until 1787 in Goochland County. It is likely that John Strong, Jr., married in the 1720s, as he was age 21 or 22 by 1720.

[Mrs.?] Mary STRONG may have been born Mary Martin, based on naming traditons of the time. The first son was usually given the surname of his mother's father. There were indeed Martins residing in the area at the time. Mary was closely affiliated with John Strong, 3rd. She probably resided with John Strong, 3rd, and his wife, Elizabeth, in Goochland County in the 1770s and 1780s. Mary Strong was also closely affiliated with Ann Stanley Strong, attending the Quaker weddings of two of Ann's siblings and the wedding of a sister of the first husband of Nancy Strong, daughter (probably eldest child) of Ann Strong. The signature of Mary Strong as a witness to the 1787 wedding of Sally Carrell was the last record of Mary Strong that has been discovered.

Genealogist Robert T. Strong junior is the leading researcher on the Strong family. From his STRONG FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY http://genforum.genealogy.com/strong/messages/1717.html:

512. John STRONG, Jr., was born before 24 NOV 1698 in St. Peter's Parish, probably in that part of the parish located in New Kent Co., VA. He was christened on 24 NOV 1698 in St. Peter's Parish. He died before 1752 in western Hanover Co., VA (St. Martin's Parish of the Church of England).

[Mrs.?] Mary STRONG, who attended the Quaker weddings of some of Ann Stanley Strong's siblings and who apparently resided with John Strong, III, in Goochland County after 1770, was likely the widow of John Strong, Jr., of Hanover County. They were likely married before 1730, probably in Hanover Co., VA. 513. [Mrs.?] Mary STRONG died after 1786 in probably Goochland Co., VA. Mary was not the wife of John Strong, III, with whom she apparenlty resided, as John Strong, III, had a wife named Elizabeth when he sold his land in Goochland County shortly after the last record of Mary Strong was recorded there. Mary Strong was likely the mother of John Strong, III.

In the absence of vital records about this family, an effort was made by Robert T. Strong junior to reconstruct the family from bits and pieces of information gathered from many sources. Several clues regarding this family were found in the family's charge account at the local general store, operated by "Col." John Chiswell. [Several of the Stanley families also traded at this store, proving that the Strongs and Stanleys resided in the same general vicinity.]

The following were probable or possible children of John Strong, Jr., and his wife, probably "Mary Strong".

256 i. Martin STRONG, 1st

ii. "Matt" [STRONG?] made purchases to the estate of John Strong, Jr. It is not clear whether or not he was a son of John Strong. If a son, he was likely born before 1732, probably in Hanover Co., VA. He perhaps died after 1751 in Hanover County.

iii. Mrs. Sarah [STRONG?] BLALOCK also made purchases charged to the account of the estate of John Strong, Jr., and is thus presumed to have been a daughter of John Strong, Jr. If so, she was likely born before 1731 in Hanover Co., VA, and she likely died died after sometime after 1752.

iv. Sherwood STRONG, 1st, is a proven brother of John Strong, III, and of Martin Strong, 1st. Sherwood Strong was probably born about 1733 in Hanover Co., VA. Between 1754 and 1763, Sherwood Strong served in the British colonial army for at least one six month tour of duty. He and his brother, JOhn, served in the 2nd Virginia Regiment, French and Indian Wars. Sherwood Strong died before 1780 in Virginia, probably in Hanover County. He had no surviving sons, and probably no daughters, to inherit his land rights.

v. Elizabeth STRONG was probably born before 1735 in Hanover Co., VA. She, too, made purchases that were charged to the estate of John Strong, Jr. No records of her have been found after the early 1750s. She likely married but may have died after 1751 in Hanover Co., VA.

vi. John STRONG, 3rd, also served in the British colonial army between 1754 and 1763 for at least one six month tour of duty in the 2nd Virginia Regiment, French and Indian Wars. John Strong was probably born before 1736 in Hanover County, VA. He died in 1815 in Clarke or Oglethorpe Co., GA. His will was recorded in Clarke County, GA.

vii. William STRONG, Sr., was born before 1738 in Hanover Co.?, VA. He died in 1816 in Clarke Co., GA. He was a resident of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, in 1759 when he and his wife purchased land in Goochland County. They resided in eastern Goochland County until 1776 then moved to adjacent Buckingham County. After the Revolution, his sons began to migrate to Georgia, possibly to obtain military land grants. William Strong, Sr., also relocated to Georgia and settled in the area that became Clarke County.

viii. Nathan(iel) STRONG, Sr., was born about 1744, probably in Hanover Co., VA. He resided in Louisa and Goochland Counties in close proximity to John Strong, III, if not on his brother's land prior to purchasing some of his brother's land. Around 1815 he relocated to Madison County, Mississippi Territory, now Madison County, Alabama. He died testate in 1823 in Madison Co., AL.

ix. Martha STRONG, the first Mrs. Eleazar(ius) Williams, resided in the same part of Goochland County where John, Nathan, and Mrs. Ann Strong resided. Based on this proximity in time and place, she is judged to be a likely daughter of John Strong, Jr. Martha was born probably before 1750 in probably Hanover Co., VA. She died before 1778 in Goochland Co., VA.
