Thomas Archdale was born c 1536 at Stafford, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of John Archdale and Ann (Unknown). Thomas Archdale married Mary Clifton, daughter of Richard Clifton and Margaret Morton, on 31 Oct 1568 at Saint Antholin Budge Row, London, England. Thomas Archdale married Blith Wilfred on 29 Dec 1583 at London. Thomas Archdale died on 27 Nov 1611 at London.
Thomas Archdale, a member of the Drapers Company, was admitted in 1559 to freedom in the City of London; thus he became a citizen which was a prerequisite for doing business in the city, by virtue of his apprenticeship as a Draper to Thomas Duffield. (Drapers Company records) Thomas was first recorded in St. Antholin Parish in 1568 when he married Mary Clifton. The Archdale Memoirs state Thomas' wife Mary Clifton was the "daughter of Richard Clifton of London, Skinner to King Henry VIII (by Margaret Morton of Shropshire)." No source is given for this statement. The Drapers were a religious fraternity attached to the church of St Mary Bethlehem in Bishopsgate, London.

On 23 Sep 1589 William Androwes of Tottenham, Middlesex, England conveyed to "Thomas Archdale, citizen and draper of London, and to Barbara Archdale” certain property in Tottenham, referring to John Androwes, father and Roger Androwes, grandfather of the said William. (Claus Rolls, 31 Eliz: Part 29) (Waters Genealogical Gleanings) Barbara was apparently Thomas' daughter Barbara because the messuage, Page Green, in Tottenham, was a bequest in her 1651 Wanleip, Leicestershire will. (Archdale Memoirs, p. 3)

In 1597 Thomas was named co-executor of the St Margaret Pattens, London will of his brother Martin. In 1599 Thomas was named in the will of his brother Matthew.

The will of Thomas Archdale of St Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury Parish, citizen and draper of London, 5 Mar 1609 with a nuncupative [oral] codicil declared about 14 Nov 1611 was proved 3 Dec 1611. Neither Archdale Memoirs nor Waters' Genealogical Gleanings state whether the nuncupative codicil is included below, nor if so, which part of the will it was.

Thomas' will included many bequests: My body to be buried in the parish church of St. Antholins near the body of my first wife. To my three daughters, Margaret Combe, Sara Sare and Barbara Palmer five hundred marks apiece, one hundred each a year until paid. One hundred pounds to Archdale Combe, at age of twenty one. To my grandchild Sara Sare the younger, at her age of twenty years, one hundred pounds. To my grandchild Jane Sare at age of twenty years, fifty pounds. To my grandchild Thomas Sare, at twenty one, fifty pounds. To my grandchild, Mary Smythe, at her age of twenty one years one hundred pounds, so that she be guided and directed by her father and mother, especially touching her marriage. To the child wherewith my daughter Barbara Palmer is now conceived if it be a daughter, one hundred pounds at her age of twenty one; but if it be a son I bequeath the said one hundred pounds to John Palmer, the son of my said daughter Barbara, to be paid at his age of twenty and one years. To my cousin, Abraham Archedale the yearly payment of twenty pounds during the life of the natural mother of said Abraham; also fifty pounds more to be paid to him only by ten pounds a year. To my cousin Bridget Archedale, thirty pounds within six months next after my decease. To my cousin Richard Ripton forty shillings a year until twenty pounds be paid. Six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence each to my friend James Colbrone and his son Thomas Colbrone. To my cousin, Thomas Archedale, the son of my cousin Richard Archedale, my godson, ten pounds, to be paid at his age of twenty one years. To the two maids which now serve my daughter Barbara five pounds apiece, to be paid unto them the day of their marriage if they then shall be servants to my said daughter and shall marry by and with the liking and consent of the said Barbara and her husband. To the poor of St. Antholins five pounds. To the poor of the parish of Aldermanbury and the parish of Norton in Kent, to each five pounds. To Mr. Harlam pastor of said parish of Aldermanbury, five pounds. To the poor of St John's upon Walbrooke forty shillings, and of Whitechapel ten pounds. My son in law Ady Sare of the Inner Temple, London, Esquire, to be full and sole executor. Wood 102 (Archdale Memoirs, p. 87) and(05 Mar 1609 - 03 Dec 1611, London EN, Will of Thomas Archdale)

The parish records of St Antholin Budge Row indicate Thomas' wishes were followed: he was buried at the church on 27 Nov 1611, "Mr. Thomas Archdale from Aldermanbury." (Archdale Memoirs) St John the Baptist Walbrook and St Antholin Budge Row are in London's city center. St. Mary Whitechapel, although less than a mile from the center of the City of London, is in Stepney, Middlesex, England. Thomas' will reportedly also mentioned property in the parishes of both St Antholin Budge Row and St John the Baptist Walbrook, London.

Thomas was living in Aldermanbury at the time of his death, and may have had his own home, or lived with his widowed daughter Margaret Archdale Combe or with his youngest daughter and her husband, William and Barbara Archdale Palmer.

Father:John Combe I (c 1560 - Sep 1610)
Mother:Margaret Archdale (Nov 1569 - Sep 1616)
William Coombe was born in Sep 1604 at London, England. He was the son of John Combe I and Margaret Archdale. William Coombe was christened on 1 Oct 1604 at Saint Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, London, England. He died in Mar 1630 at Oxfordshire, England, at age 25.
In 1616 following the death of his mother in St Mary Aldermanbury, London, William Combe was named in her estate records as a minor son. In 1620 William paid his "caution money" to Trinity College in Oxfordshire. (Archivist, Trinity College, Oxfordshire, Correspondence with Combs Researcher Denise Mortorff, 1998)

William apparently never married nor left Oxford. By the time he died in 1629/30, he was a fellow at Oriel College, Oxford University, and there is undoubtedly much additional data available in regard to his tenure at Oxford, including extracts from Foster's Oxford Oxonienses, which should contain information in regard to his age, his ancestry and his father's residence. Apparently other records exist in regard to books William and his brother Archdale both donated to Trinity College prior to their deaths, and there should be a record of his appointment as a fellow to Oriel College.

William died testate in 1629 (OS) between 22 Feb when he signed his will and 5 Mar when his successor at Oriel College was appointed. His will is replete with bequests to numerous relatives including naming his brothers John and Archdale as co-executors. In 1634 his brother Archdale, died in Oxfordshire, also s.p., 21 and administration of their estates fell to their brother John who died in April 1652. The last record of William was in May 1652 when his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lovett Combe assumed administration of his estate.

John Archdale1

M, ID# 8801, (a 1501 - )
Charts:Juanita Bessie Counts * lineage
John Archdale was born a 1501. He married Ann (Unknown) a 1526. His estate was probated in 1557 at Staffordshire, England.
John Archdale of Staffordtown was born before 1508, quite probably in Acton Trussell, a small parish in Staffordshire three miles from the town of Stafford, where John died in 1577.

John was evidently a man of means in his community, serving in 1540 as Bailiff of Stafford, 1541 as Chamberlain, 1546 as Bailiff again, and in 1551 as Chamberlain again. His sons appear to have all been well-educated and successful -- "men of the world" at a time when many never left the villages in which they were born.

John "is stated to have been 'of kin' to Alice, Elizabeth and Rose, daughters and co-heiresses of John Cowell of Dungworth Storrs, in the chapelry of Bradfield." (Harleian Ms. No. 326) and (Archdale Memoirs, p. 1) The only Bradfield chapelry located thus far is in the parish of Ecclesfield, Yorkshire (northern division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, West Riding). There are a number of 1560-80 patrish extracts, with naming patterns that are quite intriguing with females Alice, Katherine and Margaret – all names also given to daughters by the Archdale sons.

At the time of his death John was married to Anne, whom he predeceased, and about whom nothing more is known. When John married Anne is unknown, or whether she was the mother of his sons, only one of whom, Martin, is known to have named a daughter Anne, which may have been for the wife of his brother Barnard. Richard named a daughter Mary, but this was likely for his wife Mary. Richard and Thomas each named a daughter Barbara, but this may have been for Martin's wife. Richard and Thomas each named a daughter Margaret; Richard and Barnard each named a daughter Alice; and Martin and Thomas each named a daughter Sarah. So far as is known, none named a daughter, Elizabeth – after their sister.

The Archdale Memoirs provided the little known about John and Anne and much of what was known about their descendants, most of whom were primarily documented by a combination of the Harleian Visitations and with family christening and marriage records and wills. The Archdale Memoirs was found to be accurate in most respects and highly documented for that era of family histories.

– Harleian Visitations of London, 1633-5, Archdale Family. The Harleian Society published Visitation pedigrees which were based on the rough notes of the Heralds making the Visitation. Many times the finished products were unreliable. A Visitation pedigree may generally be accepted as far back as the great-grandfather of the man who entered submitted it; beyond that the pedigrees were useful for guides for further research in original sources.

An unidentified Margaret Combe, was buried in Sparsholt on 25 Feb 1653/4 and may have been the daughter of John and Elizabeth Combe. If a baptismal record was located for Margaret, then that parish's register might reveal yet more children of John's. A search of IGI entries reveals no Margaret born to a John during the period 1630-1652; however because IGI parish extracts at this time account for less than one third of England's parishes, the baptism may exist but as yet be unpublished.

Conflicting records exist about Sir Robert Lovett's second wife Anne.
--Burke described Sir Robert's second wife, Anne, as the "daughter of Richard Saunders, esq. of Dinton, by Elizabeth [Blount] his wife, daughter of Blount of Blountshall in the county of Leicester."
--The History of Buckinghamshire stated Sir Robert married second "Anne, Dau. of Richard Saunders, Esq. of Dinton."
--The Lovett Memorials states the marriage record for Sir Robert Lovett of Liscombe, Buckinghamshire, and Alice Anne Saunders of Dinton, Buckinghamshire is in the Leighton Buzzard Church register: “1610. Oct. 24 Robitus de Soulbury, Militis, and Alice, de Laigton” [of Leighton] however surnames were not included therein; that their third son Robert was christened in Dinton in 1623/4 may be relevant .
--The Memorials also stated Sir Robert's second wife was "Alice Anne Saunders of Dinton, Buckinghamshire" – with no source was given, and it may have been a later attempt to reconcile the conflicting marriage records.
