Benjamin Wheat

M, ID# 5385, (27 Nov 1742 - c 1798)
Father:John Wheat Jr. (18 Nov 1702 - c 1774)
Mother:Ann Unknown (4 May 1706 - c 1793)
Charts:Amanda Ola Weathers lineage
Benjamin Wheat was born on 27 Nov 1742 at Saint John's Parish, Prince George's, Maryland. He was the son of John Wheat Jr. and Ann Unknown. Benjamin Wheat married Elizabeth Unknown c 1767. Benjamin Wheat married Martha Chavis on 26 Dec 1792 at Henry Co, Virginia. Benjamin Wheat died c 1798 at Henry Co, Virginia.
The Wheats were originally from Prince George Co., MD and had very good records for the family until they moved from Maryland. Benjamin Wheat’s eldest child, John Wheat was baptized in Maryland on Nov. 6, 1768 and the family likely moved shortly afterward to Virginia because the later-born children were not listed on the parish records. Benjamin Wheat was later located living on Leatherwood Creek of Henry Co., VA., and his brothers Azariah and Levi were located living in adjacent Pittsylvania Co., VA.

Benjamin Wheat was on the 1782 Henry Co, VA Personal Property Tax List with 1 tithe (male over age 16), 3 horses and 14 cattle. (https://www.newrivernotes.com/neighboring_henry_enumerations_1782_personalpropertytax.htm) and (pg 30; https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSQ2-SQM3-T?i=29&cat=776189) The eldest son, John Wheat, would have been 15 in 1783, so he would not have appeared.

Benjamin was on the 1785, 1786, 1788, and 1790 - 1793 Henry Co, VA tax lists. There was no change in the number of adult males living in Benjamin Wheat’s household with just one tithe listed. After 1793, Benjamin Wheat disappeared from the tax list, which likely indicated he was ill.

In 1795 when Benjamin married Martha Chavis, surety was provided by James Corsey/Creasy and Daniel DeRusoussett (sic), Benjamin's son-in-law.

In 1794 - 1796 there were no Wheats on the tax list which would indicate the oldest son John Wheat was not residing in the county and his brothers were too young to appear on the tax list. By 1796 James McCullah and Rebecca Wheat, Benjamin's daughter, may have moved into her father’s home to run the farm because James McCullah did appear on the tax list.

___date?___; Deed: William Toombs and his wife, Susanah Toombs, to James Melvin for the sum of eleven pounds sell 50 ac on the branches of the south fork of Leatherwood Creek, it being part of a tract Toombs bought of Benjamin Wheat, joins Daniel McBride. (Abstracts Henry Co, VA Deed Books V and VI; Lela C. Adams; 1979)

In 1797 - 1798 the eldest son John Wheat returned to Henry County, VA likely to settle his father’s estate and after 1798 John no longer appeared on the Henry Co, VA tax list, nor did any other Wheats through 1805.

The 1798 Henry Co, VA lawsuit "James McCullock vs. Wheat" would indicate there was a dispute over inheritance of the estate of Benjamin Wheat. (Henry Co, VA Order Book 7; Henry County, Virginia Order Book 7; 1797-1804: 67; microfilm 21; Library of Virginia, Richmond) This was probably filed to force the court to settle the estate of Benjamin Wheat because he left no will. Unfortunately, the lawsuit never made it to court, otherwise Benjamin’s entire family would have been listed.

Benjamin's lineage is confirmed by an atDNA triangulation posted on wikitree by the Wheat Family DNA Study which DNA-verifies his ancestors.

Nancy Wheat1

F, ID# 5386, (1774 - a Jun 1860)
Father:Benjamin Wheat (27 Nov 1742 - c 1798)
Mother:Elizabeth Unknown (c 1747 - )
Nancy Wheat was born in 1774 at Virginia. She was the daughter of Benjamin Wheat and Elizabeth Unknown. Nancy Wheat married Daniel DeRossett on 24 Aug 1792 at Henry, Virginia. Nancy Wheat died a Jun 1860 at Roane, Tennessee.
No baptismal/christening record was found in Maryland, and it is likely Nancy Wheat DeRossett was born between 1771-1774 in Virginia, which is where she reported she was born on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Establishing her estimated birth year was based on:

1830 Census age 50-59, est. birth 1771-1780
1840 Census age 70-79, est. birth 1761-1770
1850 Census age 76, estimated DOB at that time to be 1774
1860 Census age 93, estimated DOB abt 1767

Nancy Wheat and Daniel DeRossett had eight children in 19 years.
The 1850 and 1860 censuses listed Nancy Wheat Derossett in the home of her son, Willis DeRossett. She died after June of 1860 in Roane, Tennessee.

Father:John Wheat (Nov 1768 - b 1840)
Mother:Elisabeth (Unknown) (1775 - )
Shererick Wheat was born c 1793. He was the son of John Wheat and Elisabeth (Unknown).
Also residing in Guilford County in 1830 was Shederick Wheat, age 40 - 49, and his wife, age 30 - 39 with 3 males and 1 female under age 5. Given that Shederick has 4 children under 5, this could be Shederick just starting a family and hence a possible older son of John's or Shederick with wife number two and possibly John's younger brother. At this point Shederick is presumed to be another child of John's.

Elizabeth Wheat

F, ID# 5390, (1794 - b Nov 1839)
Father:John Wheat (Nov 1768 - b 1840)
Mother:Elisabeth (Unknown) (1775 - )
Elizabeth Wheat was born in 1794 at Virginia. She was the daughter of John Wheat and Elisabeth (Unknown). Elizabeth Wheat died b Nov 1839 at Indiana.
Elizabeth Wheat Decker's marriage record stated "of lawful age proven by Jesse __ Butler(?)." Lawful age in the early 1800s for females was usually age 18 and hence it is estimated Elizabeth was born about 1794. By 1830 Joseph Decker and Elizabeth had 13 children in their household.

It would be helpful to know when and how Elizabeth got to Indiana by the time of her 1812 marriage there, given that the rest of Benjamin's family was moving south, not north. Although Elizabeth's presumed sister Nancy Wheat Murphy also resided in Indiana, there is no record showing Nancy was residing there before 1834 and she was not living near where Elizabeth was.

The 1880 census for Elizabeth's son John William Decker stated his father was born in Virginia and his mother in South Carolina and Elizabeth's daughter Nancy stated both parents were born in Virginia.

Elizabeth is believed to be the daughter of John Wheat and his wife Elizabeth based on the following evidence. Because of atDNA triangulation matches among descendants of Elizabeth and descendants of her presumed father John Wheat and his sister Nancy Wheat, Elizabeth was likely the daughter of one of Benjamin's sons. Of the known sons of Benjamin, John Wheat would have been of the right age to have had a child during the time frame Elizabeth was born. Numerous atDNA triangulations among the descendants verified the lineage and are posted on wikitree.com.

Levi T. Wheat

M, ID# 5391, (c 1795 - 1832)
Father:John Wheat (Nov 1768 - b 1840)
Mother:Elisabeth (Unknown) (1775 - )
Levi T. Wheat was born c 1795. He was the son of John Wheat and Elisabeth (Unknown). Levi T. Wheat died in 1832 at Putnam Co, Georgia.
Levi T. Wheat married Adaline Thrash in Mar 1827 in Putnam Co, GA.

In 1822 Levi Wheat served as a witness when David Armfield deeded land to the Hickory Creek School in Guilford Co, NC.

On 1 Apr 1826 and 31 Mar 1831 Levi was included on a list of people with letters waiting for them at the Eatonton, GA post office.

On 29 Oct 1827 Levi announced he was a candidate for tax collector in the next election.

On 25 May 1829, Levi Wheat and his father-in-law Christopher Thrash of Putnam Co, GA deeded 100 acres on Shady Creek to Daniel B(?)rockwell for $325.

Levi was on the 1831 and 1832 Morgan Co, GA tax lists with Hiram Wheat. http://usgwarchives.net/ga/morgan/taxlists.html) Hiram is hypothesized to be a brother of Levi, who was applied on 4 Sep 1832 to be the executor of Hiram's estate, but Hiram could be Levi's uncle.

On 13 Dec 1831 Levi Wheat and Christopher Thrash, executors of the estate of Andrew Thrash, had a partial sale of the estate property. Christopher and Andrew were brothers.

An indenture made 31 Dec 1831 between General Robert Putnam Bledsoe (1783-~1854), husband of Mary Harrison, of Putnam Co, GA and Levi Wheat of Morgan Co, GA thereby Bledsoe sold Wheat for $1500 522 acres on Shoulderborne and Richland Creeks in Greene Co, GA originally granted to William Kimbrough and David Criswell and bounded by the lands of Mrs. Henry Credille, Wilson Williams, Kimbrough, Nathaniel Hines and Henry F. Scott. The land was the entire tract sold by Bush to Varner. The document was signed 31 Dec 1831 by Robert Bledsoe, witnessed by Jeremiah Clark and James M. Dunn, and recorded 26 Dec 1839. (Greene Co, GA Deeds, p. 400)

An indenture was also made that same day on 31 Dec 1831 between Levi Wheat of Morgan Co, GA and Robert Bledsoe of Putnam Co, GA wherein Wheat sold Bledsoe for $1500 522 acres on Shoulderborne and Richland Creeks in Greene Co, GA originally granted to William Kimbrough and David Criswell and bounded by the land of Mrs. Henry Credille, Wilson Williams, Kimbrough, Nathaniel Hines, Henry F. Scott. The land was the entire tract sold by Bush to Varner. The complicated Wheat – Bledsoe deal entailed three notes of $500 each due from Wheat to Bledsoe on Christmas day of 1832 – 1834. The document was signed by Levi Wheat, witnessed by Jeremiah Clark and James M. Dunn and recorded 23 Mar 1832. (Greene Co, GA deeds, p. 38-39) Levi Wheat did not live to pay off this debt to Bledsoe.

The Robert Bledsoe named in the three Levi Wheat land deeds and who also had a financial interest in Levi Wheat’s estate was General Robert Putnam born 1783 and died about 1854 and the husband of Mary Harrison Bledsoe. Bledsoe was serving as a justice of the peace at the time of the estate settlement.

In 1832 Morgan County had a drawing for a Gold Lottery for residents of Morgan County whose lands were ungranted and Levi was included in the list published in the Milledgeville newspaper Southern Miscellany on 6 May 1843. The state did not guarantee there was any gold on the land and the drawing allocated land to the winner or their heirs.

The State of Georgia held one final land lottery in Dec 1833 to distribute fractions of land from the Cherokee territory and other remaining lots not drawn in previous lotteries. Levi Wheat was also a winner the the Fractions Lottery for land in Morgan Co on 10 Dec 1832. Apparently Levi was awarded 56 acres.

Levi had likely already died in the fall of 1832 because the mercantile and doctor's bills included in the estate settlement ended in the fall.

Christopher Thrash, administrator of Levi Wheat’s estate and also Levi's father-in-law, paid bills totaling $1458 due in 1833 to John Foster, N. Hines, William B Carter, A. W. Cozard(?), Gilly Moore, Peggy Winslett. Robert Bledsoe was paid $1000 consisting of the last two payments owed on the 522 acre tract in Greene Co, GA. Additionally amounts were paid to Jonathan Wheat of $127 for wages as the plantation overseer at age 22 and for supplies for the plantations; Jonathan signed his name on the receipt. What ever relationship there may be between Levi and Jonathon is unknown.

Included in the estate accounting was a 12 Oct 1832 “note on Ephraim Trotter” for $250. Ephraim was married to Levi's sister Polly Wheat.

Christopher Thrash also paid $16.80 to Peggy Winslett for bacon, soap, cloth including homespun, and for picking cotton on Levi's plantation, the latter likely done by Peggy's slaves. The receipt listed Peggy’s name as Margaret Winslett. The Shoulderbone Creek and Richland Creek area is where Peggy's father-in-law the immigrant Samuel Winslett originally owned land near his Kimbrough relatives.

So why did Christopher Thrash then sell the 522 acres to the neighbor for only $1000 in 1834 since the land still must have been worth $1500? Perhaps another payment of $500 was made before the estate sale. An indenture was made on 5 Feb 1834 by Christopher Thrash of Meriwether Co, GA, administrator of the estate of Levi Wheat deceased, and Nathaniel Hines of Greene Co, GA wherein Thrash sold Hines for $1000 522 acres on Shoulderborne and Richland Creeks in Greene Co, GA formerly owned by Robert Bledsoe and tranferred by Bledsoe to Levi Wheat. Signed Christopher Thrash and witnessed by Gilly Moore and John Copeland. Recorded 26 Dec 1834. (Greene Co, GA deeds, p. 401)

On 15 Nov 1833 Levi's Greene Co, GA home, livestock and furniture were sold at a public sale. A separate sale was done for the Putnam Co, GA land and a black man.

In 1834 Christopher Thrash filed an accounting with the court for the Levi Wheat estate for paying bills to John Wheat (Levi's brother Jonathan), J. P. Evans, J. L. Horn, Nathaniel Hins, William B. Carter, John J. Fischer, Carter Hopkins and William Whitfield, totaling $300 including $40 to John Wheat on 15 Dec 1834; Jonathan signed his name as John Wheat. On 12 Oct 1844 Christopher Thrash died in Meriwether Co, GA.

Disambiguation: Levi T. Wheat was not the Levi H. Wheat of Roane Co, TN who was the son of Levi Wheat.

Research Notes:

Levi Wheat may have been the man who served as a private in the 8th Regiment (Walls) in Virginia in 1812. Given an average age for most who served during the war as 25, he would have but been a young age 17 in 1812. (United States War of 1812 Index to Service Records, 1812-1815, database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q292-91QC : 8 March 2021), Levi Wheat, 1812-1815; citing NARA microfilm publication M602 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); roll 223; FHL microfilm 882,741.) Another Levi Wheat from Maryland who died in Tennessee would be more likely to be the Levi Wheat who served in the Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812.

Numerous atDNA triangulations posted on wikitree.com confirm his lineage to his parents and ancestors.

Nancy Wheat

F, ID# 5393, (c 1799 - )
Father:John Wheat (Nov 1768 - b 1840)
Mother:Elisabeth (Unknown) (1775 - )
Nancy Wheat was born c 1799. She was the daughter of John Wheat and Elisabeth (Unknown).
Nancy Wheat married Elias Murphy on 18 Dec 1822 at Guilford Co, NC and then moved to Indiana. The Rush Co, Indiana census shows she was born about 1799 in North Carolina and lists her children as Jesse, Martha A., Jonathan, Zeno and Elizabeth -- all but Jesse being names known to be associated with her father John Wheat's family.

Based on her marriage in Guilford Co, NC where the family of John Wheat lived in 1830, and her naming her children the same names as her presumed siblings and mother -- one of which was an uncommon name, Nancy is hypothesized to be the daughter of John Wheat and Elizabeth. John Wheat resided next door to the Jonathan Murphy family and several homes away from two other John Murphy families. DNA matching will be needed with Nancy's descendants.

Martha A. M. Willoughby

F, ID# 5396, (1845 - )
Father:Frederick Willoughby (c 1811 - )
Mother:Martha Wheat (c 1811 - b 18 Aug 1860)
Martha A. M. Willoughby was born in 1845 at Alabama. She was the daughter of Frederick Willoughby and Martha Wheat.
Martha Wiloughby married Henry C. Cardwell on 4 Jun 1868 in Chambers Co, AL. Despite her stated birth date of Jan 1847 on the 1900 census, she could not have been born then because of the birth of a close sibling, so her birth date as established by the 1850 - 1860 censuses was used.

Disambiguation: Martha was not the Martha A. Caldwell who died 13 Apr 1946 in Marshall Co, AL. There were many women named Martha Caldwell in Alabama. The Martha Caldwell in Marshall Co was Martha Turner who married William Caldwell in Blount Co, AL in 1889 and was shown as the wife of William Caldwell in 1910 in Marshall Co, AL and born in GA.

Rebecca Wheat

F, ID# 5399, (c 1771 - c 1858)
Father:Benjamin Wheat (27 Nov 1742 - c 1798)
Mother:Elizabeth Unknown (c 1747 - )
Rebecca Wheat was born c 1771 at Leatherwood District, Henry Co, Virginia. She was the daughter of Benjamin Wheat and Elizabeth Unknown. Rebecca Wheat died c 1858 at Tennessee.
Rebecca's birth date was estimated as 1771 given her 1792 marriage, the same year as her sister Nancy married. In 1783 she was residing at Leatherwood, Henry, Virginia.

Rebecca married James McCullah in 1792 in Henry Co, VA. In 1792, Alexander McCullough had 3 adult males living in his household, one being James McCullough. James McCullough and Rebecca Wheat's son Alexander was born in 1793. This meant James was living at home in his father's house when they were married.

In 1798, James McCullough appeared on the Wythe Co, VA tax list. He likely separated from Rebecca the following year. James McCullah reappeared in Henry County in 1805 and he remarried Fanny King.

In 1805, Rebecca was living in Wythe Co, VA with her younger brother Hezekiah (Hazariah) Wheat, when there was a severe drought which forced them to move to Hawkins Co, TN. Rebecca had separated from James McCullah and married John Lamb when her family (including her brother Hazariah and her son Alexander McCullah) moved to Tennessee. At the age of 12, Alexander with his mother Rebecca, her husband John Lamb, her brother Hezekiah, and daughter Elizabeth walked barefoot across the Cumberland mountains through the Cumberland Gap with one pack horse, one pack of cooked corn meal and one bundle each of clothing, leaving all their household goods and stock behind. They settled in Hawkins Co, Tennessee.
