Levi Wheat

M, ID# 5402, (c 1778 - 11 Feb 1849)
Father:Benjamin Wheat (27 Nov 1742 - c 1798)
Mother:Elizabeth Unknown (c 1747 - )
     Levi Wheat lived at an unknown place ;
Levi was estimated to have been born about 1778 based on being age 21 at his 15 Dec 1803 marriage in Franklin Co, VA to Miriam Smith. Levi appeared on the Roane Co, TN tax list along with his brother Hazariah as early as 1805.

On 22 November 1813 Levy (Levi) Wheat signed a $1250 marriage bond in Roane Co, TN with his nephew John Derossett [DeRossett-49] for John's marriage to Patsy Pritchett.

On 14 Nov 1814 146 acres in the Third Civil District on the waters of Paw Paw Creek was conveyed to Levi Wheat by Jason Matlock for $200. (Roane Co, TN Deed Registry, Book E, pg 291)

On 1 Mar 1819 Levi Wheat signed a $1250 marriage bond in Roane Co, TN with his nephew Alexander McCullah for Alexander's marriage to Lucy Robinson. Levi was still living in the county in 1830.

In 1840 the elder Levi Wheat was living next door to his son Levi Henderson Wheat.

On 12 Oct 1827 Levi married Catherine Dillion in Roane Co, TN.

Three freeholders were appointed to provide sufficient livestock, crops and furniture to Levi Wheat's widow Catherine for her and her family to live for one year. That document was recorded 7 May 1849.

The estate sale recorded in May 1849 shows Levi's widow Catherine bought the majority of the farm tools, a bed, 3 chests, 5 chairs and a horse and 9 sheep. Other buyers at the estate sale included James Wheat, J. J. Wheat, and Henderson Wheat, who was likely Levi's son Levi Henderson Wheat.

Disambiguation: Levi was not the Levi Wheat, son of Joseph Wheat, who married Parthena Buford 15 Dec 1810 in Bedford Co, VA. Mother:Elizabeth Unknown (c 1747 - )
Hazariah Wheat was born in 1780 at Virginia. He was the son of Benjamin Wheat and Elizabeth Unknown. Hazariah Wheat died b Sep 1852 at Roane Co, Tennessee.

Basil Wheat

M, ID# 5404, (c 1782 - b 1860)
Father:Benjamin Wheat (27 Nov 1742 - c 1798)
Mother:Elizabeth Unknown (c 1747 - )
Basil Wheat was born c 1782 at Virginia. He was the son of Benjamin Wheat and Elizabeth Unknown. Basil Wheat died b 1860.
Basil Wheat is presumed to be the son of Benjamin Wheat because Basil was born at the time and in Virginia when and where the children of Benjamin were born. This relationship was affirmed by an atDNA triagulation posted on wikitree.com by the Wheat Family DNA Study.

In 1820 Basil (Basdel), age 26 to 44, had a ~12-year-old child, so he likely married about 1807 and was born about 1782. In 1840 Bassel, age 50 to 59, born 1781 - 1790, was still residing in Laurens Co, SC.

Online trees indicate Martha's parents were Jacob Chavis and Elizabeth Evans, which may be incorrect because Jacob and Elizabeth were noted as the parents of various other women named Martha Chavis. Martha's records are confused with another Martha Chavis of Mechlenburg Co, VA.      Ann Unknown was born on 4 May 1706 at Prince George's Co, Maryland. She married John Wheat Jr., son of John Wheat Sr. and Sarah Unknown, c 1727. Ann Unknown died c 1793.
Many trees list Ann's maiden name as Williams, but as yet that is unproven. Ann is shown as the wife of John Wheat in Dan D Wheat’s book The Story of a family of the Old South.

John Wheat Sr.

Charts:Amanda Ola Weathers lineage
John Wheat Sr. was born c 1675 at Maryland. He married Sarah Unknown c 1701. John Wheat Sr. died b 20 Aug 1711 at Prince George's Co, Maryland.
John Wheat, Sr. is the earliest lineage connection to pre-colonial times in this country for this line of Wheats in the old south. John was possibly born in Maryland, where he died about 1711. He married Sarah sometime before 1702, when their first child was born. They had four known children all presumed born in Prince George's Co, MD:
Francis born Piscattaway Parish, married Sarah and died 1774
John married Ann
William married Amy Wall
Joseph married Rachael.

John Wheat Sr. and Jeremiah Perdue witnessed the will of William Selby in 1698 in Prince George's Co, MD. (Maryland Calendar of Wills, pg 169 vol. 2) children; presumed that all were born in Prince George’s County in vicinity of Piscataway Parish.)

Early dates in the court records mentions John in 1693. (Court Records of Prince George’s County, Maryland, 1696-1699); and American Legal Records, Vol. 9 - Court Records of Prince George’s County, Maryland 1696-1699. XCV 486-499. pages 529-531)

A lawsuit concerning payment with tobacco over land leased from John Gallaha in 22 Aug 1699 was brought against John Sr, late of Prince George’s County, MD. The suit was filed in Charles Town which was the old county seat of Calvert County, the predecessor county of Prince George’s which was formed in 1693. John Sr. countersued and won the law suit.

John died in 1711, leaving four orphans according to court records in Prince George’s County. (Prince George’s County Maryland Administrative Accounts, 22 Dec 1722.)

After 1712 John's widow Sarah apparently married again to Jeremiah Perdue, as is supported by her sons witnessing Jeremiah's will, and lived with him on Casteel in Prince George's County, Maryland. Court records mention:
Jeremiah Perdue and Sarah his wife, security for four orphans. (John Wheat; GS Film 2201 pt 12. 1711- index Md. Inv. & Accts. 1674-1718).
Balance due the Estate of John Wheat after debts paid 4 pounds 4 shillings 6 pence with Sarah Wheat and Jeremiah Purdue, adm. 1 Aug 1712. (Liber 32c Folio 150 - Inventory)
Account of Jeremiah Perdue and wife, Sarah. 22 Dec 1712. No distribution recorded. (Liber 33a, Folio 216)
Final Account of Jeremiah Perdue and Sarah Wheat. admrs. for John Wheat, Sr. Money paid to Joseph Lovejoy, James Burgos, Thomas Hinds, Jeremiah Perdue, Benjamin Barry. (Liber 33b Folio 127 Prince George's Co, MD, land 1712)

Jeremiah Perdue’s 5 Jun 1758 will was witnessed by Francis, William, and John Wheat Jr. (Maryland Colonial Abstracts. Magrudedr. Prince George's Co, MD, Book 30, pg 22) “Jeremiah Perdue to wife Sary, part “Casteel”, 50 acres.” w/m 5 June 1758. w/p 1 Jan 1759. (IDs 3460 pt 1 Prince George's Co, MD Wills Book 1. Folio 506.)

Disambiguation: This John Wheat of Maryland is not the same man as John Wheat, son of Moses Wheat (abt.1616-1700) and Thomasine Fox (bef.1622-1689). The latter John Wheat never married and only lived in Massachusetts -- never in Maryland.

To his wife Sarah he left "all that part of the manner Land that I have a Lease for from Benedict Calvert Esquire." Upon Sarah's death or remarriage, all of said manor that adjoined Cool Spring was to be inherited by son Francis. The other half of his leased property was left to son John. The leased land mentioned here would later become part of the District of Columbia, and his beloved Cool Spring Plantation is now the site of the U. S. Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.
