Unknown Campbell1

M, ID# 8972, (a 1657 - 1752)
Charts:Susan Paulding Ruff * lineage
Unknown Campbell was born a 1657. He died in 1752 at Dumbarton Castle, Dumbarton, Scotland.
The parents for this Campbell sibling group are unproven but some of the research into their lineage by Celia Fabos-Baker follows.

At one time Sir James Campbell, 5th baronet Auchinbreck, was thought to be their father but his proven dates do not align with the births of these children. Sir James Campbell's mother left extant journals which stated James was born on a January 30 in the year before two famous reverends left the area to never again be seen by the families of Argyll and Auchinbreck. Those named reverends were gone by the end of 1674. Thus, James Campbell was born 30 Jan either 1673 or 1674. His first marriage contract was dated 11 Jul 1696 thus he was over 21 in 1696. However, if this is the same James his dates do not align with the birth date of his children.

Based on records showing ages of children at particular times for Samuel Woods family and a book compiled by a grandson of Samuel's brother Michael Woods' begun while his father and grandfather were still alive, Samuel and Michael Woods were married about 1705 into the Cambell family. The only Campbell family that was both in County Down and County Meath and Dublin City at the time of the marriages was the Campbells of Skeldons, Ireland according to the research of Celia Fabos-Baker. Charles Campbell, a descendant of the youngest of three brothers who went from Dovecoate Hall, Ayrshire, Scotland to County Down, Ireland with their maternal uncle Sir Hugh Montgomery of Braidstane, who was later made Viscount Ards in County Down (Montgomery Papers) became a prominent lawyer, and his grandfather had been one also. His grandfather's oldest brother, John Campbell had by the 1690s died without male descent. His estate, "Cumber / Comber," then passed to a son of the next brother Hugh. Charles was the youngest of the three. Hugh and Charles I had both been lawyers, administrators for the Viscount and captains in the militia. Charles II, son of Charles I, was an adult by 1641 and had, as a younger son, bought or otherwise obtained land in County Monaghan, along with other Campbells and other Scots. His community was nearly wiped out in the rebellion of 1641, and one of the Campbells in this area even had a wife who was drowned by the rebels.

By 1652, when Charles II was first interviewed for a deposition, he had left County Monaghan and first leased land in County Meath from Lord Netterville (the same family connected to the Hoey line) at Newgrange and later purchased most of the land he had initially leased. He also had a townhouse in Dublin and a law practice. In 1692 and 1693, he petitioned with a pedigree and supporting documents to have use of his own coat of arms to the Lord Lyon in Scotland and the College of Arms (England) which had a representative at Dublin Castle. Both entities granted use of the coat of arms. The pedigree he prepared and the coat of arms are in the Campbell papers in the Caldwell Collection in the Library of the Royal Irish Society of Sciences and Humanities in Dublin. (Digitized by Celia Fabos-Baker on www.AmeriCeltic.net under ancestors, then documents.

There is a issue with Charles II pedigree and what his son added to it. He lists few of the daughters of the three sons. Only in the last two generations of his immediate family and some first cousins did he list daughters. There was no pair of sisters named Mary and Elizabeth in the Charles Campbell I and II line. However, the daughters in Hugh's line are unknown, and while some of Hugh's line stayed in Down, a few mentions in letters of Charles Campbell II and III indicate some of Hugh's line also moved southward to the Dublin area. Also bear in mind that one of Samuel Woods' and Elizabeth Campbell's sons was named Charles Woods, who died in the 1750s leaving young children who were put under the guardianship of Charles' brothers--identified as also brothers to Mary Magdalena Woods-McDowell-Borden-Bowyer (1710/11-1799/1800) and Martha Woods (1718/19-1784), wife of Peter Wallace).

The Campbells of Skeldon were a cadet house to Campbells of Cessnock, itself cadet to the main house of Loudon. In the early 1600s, Paterson's "History of Ayrshire" found a record that indicated the head of the House of Skeldon was fourth in line to Loudon, after Loudon, his son, the head of Cessnock. Loudon died without male heirs. Cessnock married his cousin, heiress to Loudon and was made First Earl of Loudon. This moved up Skeldon to Cessnock and the junior line once at Dovecoate Hall (a leased property from Montgomery of Elgin -- Braidstane's senior cousin) to Skeldon proper. In the traditions of that day, this elevation combined with the Charles and Hugh Campbell lines of lawyers, allowed a petition for use of the coat of arms to be approved for some individuals.

Additionally, John Campbell of Comber had been targeted by James II and put on the list of attainted by James' Catholic Parliament in Ireland (after he had been deposed in England but was trying a comeback through Ireland with the aid of the French) and ended up in exile on the Isle of Man. His brothers were in the army of William of Orange or supplying it. This entitled them also to seek some form of reward from William of Orange who had prevailed and secured the throne by 1691. It was a combination of elevation and merit at the right time that enabled Charles Campbell II to seek use of the coat of arms in 1692 and 1693, which helped identify him and his family to later researchers and descendants.

Celia Fabos-Baker stresses most of the Campbells were still in County Down in the late 1600s. The intermarried Woods family which had names that are most unique to our family are also first in County Down and a northern town in neighboring County Louth. The intermarried Wallaces were also in County Down, though there were some Wallaces already in County Down from Sir William Wallace's extended family of younger brothers and cousins.
