Henry Southall I (of Holman)1,2

M, ID# 10034, (1764 - 1856)
Father:Holman Southall I (1740 - b 15 Aug 1797)
Mother:Elizabeth Dancy (3 Jan 1742/43 - )
Henry Southall I (of Holman) was born in 1764 at Halifax Co, North Carolina. He was the son of Holman Southall I and Elizabeth Dancy. Henry Southall I (of Holman) married Mary Arrington, daughter of Thomas James Arrington and Ann Willis, c 28 Jul 1798 at Warren Co, North Carolina. Henry Southall I (of Holman) died in 1856.
Henry and Mary Southall had three other sons less than 10 years old in 1820 who died before 1830.

In the 1811-1812 Fishing Creek District Warren Co, NC tax lists Henry Southall is shown with 172.5 acres of land and three blacks; by 1813-1814 he only had two blacks. Fishing Creek District was in the southeastern part of the county where Warren, Franklin, Nash and Halifax Counties join. Careful searching failed to determine when and how Henry Southall obtained the 172-1/2 acres of land, the only land he owned in Warren Co. Henry owned it until 1845 when he mortgaged it for debts to Furney Southall, Allen Tucker and William C. Clanton and which he evidently did not recover as the value of his property in the 1850 census was $116.

In the 1820 Warren Co census Henry Southall was shown with males: 5 under 10; 1 10/16; 1 16/18; 1 18/26; 1 45 up. Females: 2 under 10; 1 10/16; 1 26/45. By 1830 he had Males: 1 10/15; 1 15/20; 1 60/70. Females: 1 5/10; 1 40/50. By 1840 census he was in the list of "Pensioners for Revolution or Military Service": Henry Southall, 82 years old and blind.

In 1845 Henry Southall of Warren Co mortgaged to Thomas Davis, Trustee, 172-1/2 acres "the whole tract" where he lived, one negro man, his household furniture, farming tools, cattle, crops and a fan mill for debts owed to Furney Southall (likely his son) and William C. Clanton. James Southall was security on note; witness was James Southall and James proved it on 1 Mar 1845 (Warren Co., N.C. Deed Book 29, p. 51, 26 Feb. 1845) No record shows Thomas Davis sold property under this Deed of Trust. Next was a Deed of Trust from Henry Southall of Warren Co. to J. Buckston Williams of same, listing all of the above property except the land for debts to Allen Tucker (his son in law) and Furney Southall (his son.) Wit: James Southall was the witness again and proved this transaction in the May 1845 court. (Warren Co, NC Deed Book 29, p. 96, 23 May 1845)

In 1850 he was again listed as 82 years old, a farmer born in NC with property valued at $116 and living with Mary age 74 also born in NC.

Drucilla Capbell was named as legatee but no relationship was shown. The executor was Joseph Arrington; witnesses Benjamin W. Avent, Elizabeth Avent and Nathaniel Crump. (Nash Co, NC Will Book 1, page 302, will of George Gardner) Note that the Crumps had some undefined relationship with the Southall-Shell families in New Kent Co, VA and noted by Florence Shell.

Holman Southall1

M, ID# 10047, (1805 - Jul 1871)
Father:Henry Southall I (of Holman) (1764 - 1856)
Mother:Mary Arrington (a 1780 - )
Holman Southall was born in 1805 at Warren Co, North Carolina. He was the son of Henry Southall I (of Holman) and Mary Arrington. Holman Southall married Rebecca Reaves, daughter of William McGuffy Rives and Mary Turner, c 4 Dec 1829 at Warren Co, North Carolina. Holman Southall died in Jul 1871 at Christian Co, Kentucky.
Holman Southall bought land in northwest Warren Co, NC -- a different area from where his father had land -- adjoining the land of his father-in-law in 1835 five years after his marriage. Alexander Williams of Sumner Co, TN sold Holeman Southall of Warren Co, NC for $519.183/4 for 159 3/4 acres in Warren Co on both sides of Deep Creek adjoining William Paschall, John Watkins, Jr., ____ Bullock, and Jno. Dowling. Witnesses were Nathan Milam & John E. Twitty; proven by John E. Twitty at the Nov 1835 Court; and registered on 8 Dec 1835. On 16 Nov 1835 took out a deed of trust on this land: Holeman Southall of Warren Co, NC to Henry Woodworth, Trustee, of Granville Co, NC, Deed of Trust on the land lately purchased of Alexr. Williams, adjoining William Reaves, John Watkins, Jr., Len Bullock, John Dowling & William Paschall, for purchase price of this land. Witnesses were Benja. Norwood, Jr., Francis Williams, Willis Arrington and it was proven by Willis Arrington, 24 Nov 1835 and registered 8 Dec. 1835. (Warren Co, NC Deed Book 26, p. 515).

If Holman and Rebecca lived with Rebecca's parents before the land purchase they might be listed with William Rives in 1830 census. The Warren Co 1840 census shows Holman Southall: Males: 2 under 5; 1 age 10/15; 1 age 30/40 and females: 1 under age 5; 2 age 5/10; 1 age 30/40.

Holemon Southall mortgaged his tract of land, horses, horse cart, cattle, crops (corn, fodder, oats & tobacco), 1 negro woman, household furniture, plantation utensils, etc. to John D. Tucker (Warren Co, NC Deed Book 29, p. 111, 10 Sept. 1845) -- and then joined with John D. Tucker in selling the land to Howell R. Moss on 23 Dec. 1846 (Warren Co, NC Deed Book 29, p. 320) - acknowledging this deed in Feb 1847 court. Soon after this he must have left Warren Co for Kentucky.

Probable children of Holman and Rebecca Southall were William Henry Southall born 8 Nov 1830; Tempe; Mary; James T. (was he James Thomas ?); John; and Lucy.
