William Vaughan ?1,2,3,4,5

M, ID# 4335, (a 1733 - 7 Sep 1774)
Charts:Gertrude Ellis Shell lineage
William Vaughan ? was born a 1733. He married Elizabeth (Unknown) a 1753. William Vaughan ? died on 7 Sep 1774 at New Kent Co, Virginia.
William and Elizabeth Vaughan are presumed to be the parents of Mary based on St Peter's Parish, New Kent Co, VA records showing alignment with Mary's presumed birth date and mother's given name based on family legend.

Charles City and New Kent county records reveal a number of contemporary Vaughan families whose data is recounted here to perhaps contribute toward solidifing Mary's parents and creating a more robust lineage in the future.

St Peter's Parish Register in New Kent Co, VA includes three children of William and Elizabeth Vaughan as well as other Vaughan families. In New Kent Co, VA church records William and Nancy Vaughan had children named William, Nancy and Polly; Henry and Elizabeth Rebecca Vaughan had children named Sarah and Edmund; Stannop and Anne Vaughan had a son Joseph; and Timothy (died 1760) and Sarah Vaughan had a daughter Sarah who died in 1770.

A number of Vaughan families are in the court records of neighboring Charles City Co. A William Vaughan born about 1625 who was age 48 and a Sarah Vaughan born about 1634 who was age 39 each gave Charles City Co court depositions in 1673. In 1658 a William Vaughan appeared in court against Francis Gregory and the following year settled a debt he owed John Beauchamp in court. A William Vaughan appeared in court in 1677. In 1677 a William Vaughan was appointed to appraise and administer the Samuel Johnson estate, but he was removed as administrator and replaced by Thomas Mudget that year; in 1678 he was ordered to bring the Johnson estate account and inventory into court and was finally restored as Johnson's estate administrator. That year this William appraised the David Thomas estate. A William Vaughan appeared in court several times in 1679 and one caught a runaway in 1688. In 1690 a Hester Vaughan was imported to Virginia. In 1693 a William Vaughan was paid 300 pounds tobacco for killing a wolf.

Charles City County Chancery records show in 1793 a William Vaughan, son of Rabley, and William's wife Ann, the daughter of John Dancy brought suit for 500 pounds tobacco or equivalent land for his wife's dowry. The suits continued after John Dancy's death, being brought by William and his wife Anne and others against the estate of John Dancy and his orphan daughter Susannah in 1777. By 1798 a suit was in court against Henry Vaughan junior the executor of William Vaughan.

On 1 Apr 1729 Rabley and Mary Vaughan of James City Co sold Edward Cocke of Charles City Co 100 acres with all houses bordered by Matchcoat's Run to the Horse Bridge; the land of Capt Thomas Hamlin, deceased, and Thomas Harwood in Westover Parish, which was part of the Abraham Hamlin, deceased, tract given by will to his niece Mary Cocke, the mother of the said Mary Vaughan. On 3 Sep 1729 Thomas and Martha Vaughan of James City Co sold Edward Cocke of Charles City Co 100 acres on Matchcoat Run, Cooper's Run and Hamlin's line in Westover Parish, part of the Abraham Hamlin tract willed in 1700 to his niece Mary Cocke, mother of said Martha Vaughan. Thus Mary Cocke Vaughan and Martha Cocke Vaughan were sisters.

A Thomas Vaughan was in court in 1742; Sarah Vaughan appeared in court in 1746; William Shields Vaughan was in court in 1754-1757 including to receive some deeds; William, George and John Vaughan were in court during 1743, 1754 and 1757 respectively. A James Vaughan was in court in 1745; a James Vaughan's estate was attached by the Collier family in 1745; a James Vaughan was licensed to run an ordinary at the courthouse in 1750; and another James Vaughan was frequently in court from 1748 through 1757.

Rabley Vaughan was often in court in 1743-1757, including serving as a juror. The 1770 will of Rabley Vaughan of Charles City Co probated in 1772 mentions his son William (who was to marry in 1768 Ann Dancy, the daughter of John Dancy) as well as daughters Sarah Finch, Martha Hill, Hannah Willcox and Nance Nance; a Henry Southall apparently posted bond for the executor of Rabley's estate. This son William Vaughan had numerous court actions recorded in Charles City Co including serving as executor of his brother-in-law "Brothers Finch's" estate for which he provided an accounting in 1768; witnessing the 1771 will of Edward Dancy in Charles City Co; and witnessing the 1771 will of Zacharias Nance, likely his brother-in-law, for which Henry Southall was the executor.

Henry Vaughan gave consent for his daughter Betsy to marry Thomas Batts in 1806 as witnessed by James Vaughan. Henry Vaughan consented to his daughter Mary Lacy Vaughan to marry William Taylor in 1811 as witnessed by John Wilson and secured by the same Taylor and Wilson and witnessed by Robert Christian.
